TNT and TBS boost development slates with update of 'Dallas,' new shows about detectives

TNT and TBS have ramped up their development by taking a chance on four new projects from producers and writers like Dean Devlin (Leverage); Kenneth Biller and Mike Sussman (Star Trek: Voyager), and Allan Loeb (The Switch, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps). TNT ordered three pilots: An update of TV’s long-running Dallas, which will focus on rivals J.R. and Bobby Ewing, from Cynthia Cidre (The Mambo Kings); Perception, a drama from Biller and Sussman that’s about an eccentric neuroscientist who help the Feds solve complex cases, and the untitled Loeb project, a drama based on The Rabbit Factory by novelist Marshall Karp.

TBS, meanwhile, picked up a pilot called Brain Trust, a comedic detective series from Marco Schnabel (TNT’s The Librarian).

“These pilots reflect our enthusiasm for relatable but complex everyman heroes, showcased in exciting storytelling environments,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TNT, TBS, and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), in a statement. “They also reflect our reliance on extraordinary talent to deliver on the promise of quality series television. The writers of these projects bring great intelligence, heart, and humor to their work. We are confident each of these projects would be a terrific addition to our original series line-up.”

Wow I thought TNT was better then the other networks, but by developing a new Dallas to me shows they are just like NBC, CBS, Fox, and ABC

What’s wrong with that? If there was ever a show that could have an update, it’s Dallas. Especially if they take current events into consideration. I was more interested when it was going to be a rivalry between J.R. and Bobby’s sons though. it was a great show in its hay day. If they do it right, I don’t care what they update. Maybe it will bring the past shows into light for a younger generation. My wife was in her early 20s and had never really heard of Dallas Until Soapnet played them, it is now one of her all time favorite shows.

    • So the fact that TNT ONLY makes shows about cops and lawyers doesn’t bother you but they remake a non-procedural and suddenly they’re not a good network? I guess…

I like that TNT is doing a Dallas remake, it’s shows are getting monotonous, it’s always cops, lawyers, hospitals, that’s television in general, BORING, Dallas sounds great and I’m super interested and I was too young to even watch the original, I’m only 27.

It SHOULD be about John Ross and Christopher Ewing, not JR and Bobby. I really don’t care who they cast, but this is a stupid idea if don’t pass it down a generation.

Could care less about the Dallas update, Perception sounds a little too similar to USA’s White Collar. Obviously its not the exact same thing, but a “specialist” in a certain field helping the feds? Seems too similar to me.

The Dallas “update” they are talking about is a SEQUEL SERIES, not a remake series like Hawaii Five-0. There was talk about getting the original cast back to reprise their roles so stop complaining people.

I would Love a remake of Dallas or a sequel series either way. I can’t get enough of the show. I hope they can get it done
