CBS announced today that Joaquin Phoenix will return to Late Show with David Letterman on Sept. 22. This will mark Phoenix’s first TV appearance and first visit back to Letterman’s couch since his memorable appearance on Feb. 11, 2009. The visit ended up on YouTube and attracted 8 million views.
In anticipation of his visit, CBS will rebroadcast his Feb. 11, 2009 appearance on Sept. 16.
Phoenix is the subject of the documentary film, I’m Still Here, directed by actor Casey Affleck. The film follows Phoenix as he announces his retirement from his film career to his decision to reinvent himself as a hip-hop musician.

‘I’m Still Here’ EW review

I really would love if this turns out to be one giant act just to get attention and reinvent himself. But hopefully that doesn’t come out until after the movie release, because that would ruin it.
My boss saw the film, and she said it is very clear that this is a complete hoax — and not even a well-perpetrated one. I hope it was worth it. It probably cost Phoenix his acting career, and the bad film could cost Casey Affleck his directing career.
quiet down tool. both careers will be perfectly fine
I don’t think it will cost Phoenix his career. He’s pretty awesome. I’ll still go see his movies.
No, I don’t think it’ll ruin the career of either. Look, we’re talking about them right now, and the movie’s getting solid ratings(A- from EW.)
53% on Rotten Tomatoes (and a much worse 35% from the “Top Critics” on Rotten Tomatoes). Not so solid.
Hopefully this time he won’t be strung out on whatever he was on the last time..zoning dude!
Man, I’m hoping he is on whatever he was on last time. That made the interview!
I concur.
He may be there but will his fans be there? We are just tired of his nonsense.
I for one don’t care if I ever see him on the big or small screen again. Talk about your attention grabbing celebrity.
I can’t wait! This will be interesting.
I admire Joaquin as an actor, but he’s sooooo intense in his personal life, I’m not sure I want to know more about him. It feels like the train wreck effect — you look even though you know it will be horrible. I, for one, do not want to be manipulated. He needs to just get out there and ACT, in MOVIES. The BS of Hollywood has undone this boy big-time.
I just feel so sorry for the guy. What happened?
Good fan of his – as long as he isn’t hurting someone, I don’t care what he does in his personal life, I just want more movies!
I hope Doc Jensen explains how Jack Shepards beard ended up on Joaquins face.
This is a winning comment and may be the best dig at Lost I’ve ever read.
It was pretty pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.
if this is another act of Joaquin hope fully this time he adds on that he can have a conversation with people including dave. we shall find out
I wouldn’t mind his antics except he started around the time he should have been promoting his last film, Two Lovers. I saw it. It was a good movie. The director James Gray and everyone involved did a good job. Phoenix @#$% on them all when he turned the promotions into this stupid side show. Boo to him. Boooooo.
I’ve suspected his whole act over the past year or two to be a hoax from the beginning. But honestly, hoax or not, I like Joaquin Phoenix a whole lot less than I used to.
the film is now playing at the Toronto International Film Festival and getting absolutely abysmal reviews…so it doesn’t really matter whether it was all a hoax or not, his career is clearly in the crapper
