An average 11.4 million viewers tuned into the Video Music Awards on Sunday, making it the third most-watched telecast in MTV’s history. Ratings for the annual awards fest were up across the board from last year, including a 33% hike among persons 12-34 (the show averaged a whopping 10.0 rating in the key demographic). MTV says this marks the fourth consecutive year of ratings growth for the show.
The 2010 Video Music Awards will now go down as the No. 1 cable telecast of 2010. “Every year, MTV celebrates the music and creative genius of artists we have the privilege of working with all year long,” said Van Toffler, President of the MTV Networks Music & Logo Group, in a statement. “Last night’s luminescent VMA setting provided the perfect backdrop to do just that and we’re thrilled the audience resoundingly agreed.”

So they will only get worse from here. Great.
Truth
MUSIC IS DEAD
MUSIC IS DEADDDDDDDDD
i did it all for the nookie!
Thanks, Neitzsche! lol!
dude stfu. thx
yeah! lik mee 2!
11.4 million viewers were disappointed last night.
I agree so much. Between all the lip sync (yes i’m talking to you justin bieber) and kanye west’s overhyped performance i’m sure there was no shortage of disappointment
mtv in general went the way of many other great tv ideas a number of years ago. they thought, and they did, pretty unfairly at many times, curve what WAS a hit, who was good and so forth, they were able to steer the industry, sadly now, to the sorry state of todays ‘modern’ music. not the madonnas or gagas eminems, and the like who show real talent and made incredible strides, there are of course many others, but the point, mtv is no longer ALL THAT. what they have done is help pollute our tv and airwaves with talentless garbage musical musings, help further lower the moral fiber of our already in-need-of-help youth with filthy laden here today gone tomorrow talentless a-holes in totally crap meaningless reality crap shows. they, MTV, just suck and they are not alone as there are loads of ‘followers’ of their incredible method to get viewers by sinking lower and lower. one day, i am sure, and really hope, people and society in general, gets back to some decent form of morality that is almost nowhere to be found anymore. but yes… music today is DEAD and MTV just SUCKS and helped bring it, tv as well as the music scene, to its sh*tty present state
Well said!I find these shows very debased and more degrading each year! I won’t even watch reality TV anymore because you are rewarded for being perverse. I also agree on the music, so much talent never discovered because their to busy ruining the business with what they call music.
Although I too was disappointed with last night VMAs I have to vehemently disagree that TV in general sucks. Nurse Jackie, United States of Tara, True Blood, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Glee, Modern Family… the list goes on and proves that there is a plethora of quality programs for viewers to watch. I certainly can’t say the same for the big screen where crap wrapped up in a 3-D package continues to dominate at the box office. Thank god for the idiot box!
I agree with you about the overall quality of television there are some really great shows. I would add to your list The Closer, Rizzoli and Isles, Big Bang Theory and many more!
I am shocked the VMAs did so well but I have to say I was a watcher that didn’t turn it only because I was too busy multi-taking on the Internet and waiting for Gaga’s next outfit change. Can you believe that meat dress!
Two hours of meh. It’s been a while since i’ve seen an artist on MTV and said, “wow what a talented musician. People will still be listening to their music in 50 years.”
Most are “entertainers” who try to do a lot of things (music, acting, clothes) but they’re just ok at those things. Not great at any of them.
Fact: Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves is in my playlist and I’m 19. A song from the 60s CAN be that good! On top of that I love anything from The Archies, circa 1971.
But those same people will still hear that music years from now regardless of the slickness and decadence and wild themes. I still listen to ’80s music along with the current 2010 music and it’s still as fun and addictive today. I like the older songs too from previous decades–they influence some of the craziness of today’s music.
I watched the VMAs this year, but only because (a) we just got a hand-me-down HDTV, and (b) I was curious to see what Lady Gaga would be doing.
While the broadcast looked great, most of the festivities were really kind of bleh – there was nothing really new or interesting beyond Lady Gaga’s wardrobe.
Chelsea Handler was spot on when she chided the audience for cheering the Jersey Shore cast, noting that shows like that are why MTV doesn’t play videos.
And if Drake is really whatever Justin Timberlake said he was in his introduction, then music is in an even worse state than I had thought – and hip hop is in even more dire straits, with really nothing left to say, sadly generic as all get-out.
It was bad enough that I couldn’t bring myself to keep watching until the very end.
I agree with everything you have just said! MTV really isn’t a video channel and hasn’t been in years…surprised they still give out awards for videos.
I enjoyed the VMA’s…but it’s a shame that 11.4 million people had to see Taylor Swift embarrass herself again…i mean, you would think that the Grammy performance was enough for one year…but Taylor Swift loves to top herself and make history…not to mention, Beyonce still has one of the greatest videos of all time…but you’re still an innocent, Taylor Swift…lol
The VMA’s were last night? EW, how come you are doing any stories on it?
Dear MTV, you are the Al Bundy of TV, trying hard to re-live your glory days. You are no longer cool or cutting edge so please stop trying to pretend you are.
Perfectly said.
I wanted to see Kanye mess with Lady Gaga. She would have beat his a**.
MTV is about as relevant as the Evening Network News.
“The 2010 Video Music Awards will now go down as the No. 1 telecast of 2010″.
Did you get that fun fact from MTV itself? I’m pretty sure the Super Bowl has it beat.
“No. 1 cable telecast of 2010″.. superbowl is on nbc
Taylor Swift= huge ratings!
That’s half of the reason, the other half was Kayne. People wanted to see what, if anything, would happen.
It was both Taylor and Kanye that got huge ratings. But their bodyguards and publicist kept them apart and sequestered. I would have expected something to happen, but they each decided to perform their new songs.
