'90210' and 'Gossip Girl' return with decent ratings on CW

The CW premiered new seasons of 90210 and Gossip Girl on Monday and earned some decent numbers for the fifth network. For 90210, it was the network’s best performance among adults 18-34 (1.2 rating/4 share) and total viewers (2 million) since December 2009. The show aired on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. last season. 90210′s ratings were up over its final episodes in May by 21% among women 18-34 and 31% in total viewers.

Gossip Girl built on its 90210 lead-in by 18% in women 18-34 and 18% among females 12 to 34 yet the episode only averaged 1.85 million viewers. The season opener was virtually flat with the drama’s season ending in May.

Originals on the CW aired against reruns of comedies on CBS and the finales of Bachelor Pad and Dating in the Dark on ABC. Pad was down 10% from last week among adults 18-49 and was the series’  lowest rated telecast ever, but the two-hour finale won its timeslot in viewers (5.80 million). Dating was up 8% in the 18-49 demo versus last week and averaged 3.50 million.

NBC aired a repeat of America’s Got Talent.

Although the premiere of 90210′s Season 3 was down from last year’s, it’s a good thing it ratings were up from the finale. Hope it builds up over the next few weeks back to pre-hiatus levels.

I imagine the high ratings had something to do with the fact that very few network shows have premiered yet, so everything else was either “reality” or reruns.

Or maybe that’s actually in the article and I should read before I comment.

Or Monday Night Football. Jets were playing, so that pulls New York Audience…

Gossip Girl was way better than 90210 last night and I’m definately more intrigued by it. Well since viewer response and the reviews are positive, I hope it’s ratings pick up as it goes along:)

The CW shows really proves that the Nielsen system is busted. Most conversation that I hear about TV is about shows on the CW…and I really don’t think a large portion of the 2 million people reported is from my town.

I believe that most TV shows have more people watching them than reported and the top shows receive a little less than reported.

by decent you mean terrible, just because ew and cw are family does mean you can spin their numbers as good, cw is a fake network with sad numbers

I hope 90210 is cancelled this season. It’s a shame they didn’t do more with Brenda, Kelly, Donna and the guys. They’re too into the new characters and don’t have enough respect for the veterans.

You old fart. Those characters had their heyday back in the 90′s. I doubt anyone would tune in to watch them now.

      • Rion

Plenty of people would, you pathetic loser. No point in doing a sequel to 90210 without including the original characters, doofus.

    • HaYaT

As he said nobody wants to see the old characters. The new cast makes it fun and interesting to watch. If you want to see the old ones go and watch the old version.
      - No need to harass each other, everybody has got his own opinion so respect others and move, it’s just a damn show.

      peace ^_^

Thanks for the spin EW. You have made your corporate bosses very happy. MMMMM, Synergy!

I love (LOVE!) GG, but I do not watch live TV. Why don’t they find a way to factor in DVR viewings??

  • LAJackie

Well I’m not watching 90210 anymore unfortunately. With Chuck and HIMYM both on at 8.00 on Monday’s I’m already giving up DWTS (although I wasn’t planning on watching this season anyway due to the casting of somebody referred to as The Situation – maybe it’s time they renamed the show Dancing with the Who the Hell is that?)

  • Jenny

Did The CW pay you to write this? lmao, these are terrible ratings. And the only reason they even score this high was because of no competition. Just wait until next week they will do even worse!

    • wino

agree, i love and watch gossip girl but those numbers are dismal considering they had virtually no competition.

  • GGFan4Ever

Omfg i love GG it rocked last night. 90210 was good but they gave away to much in the season premiere. Gossip Girl made me wish i lived in NYC and my parents were rich and had money to send me to Paris.

  • Laura W

Is this Gossip girl’s last season or will it continue because last season was a fail!

  • marissa

We want gia back we ate done with that loser Navid they were so cute and way better if u want rating up do it

  • katy

You forgot to mention how Gossip Girl was down over 25% compared to it’s season premiere last year, which is unfortunate because so far this season doesn’t look as though it’ll be half bad.
