More than 6.5 million viewers tuned into the premiere of The Big C on Aug. 16, making it the network’s highest-rated original series premiere in eight years. The show stars Laura Linney as a suburban wife and teacher who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. The sixth season of Weeds also premiered on the same night and averaged over 6 million viewers  – a record premiere episode for the series.

“The unprecedented viewership for both The Big C and Weeds proves that audiences love these shows as much as we do,“ said Showtime President of Entertainment David Nevins in a statement. “There are definitely more comedic adventures in store for these fascinating, complex women. For six seasons, we’ve happily traveled along with Nancy Botwin and we’re equally as excited to follow Laura Linney and The Big C team as they chart Cathy’s unique journey through such a provocative and personal subject as cancer. We’re thrilled that these two signature shows will be returning to the network in 2011.”

  • Weeds has really improved this season, so I’m glad to see it coming back. I hope it’s the last season, though, so it can go out while it’s on a creative upswing. I had to quit watching The Big C, however, which is disappointing. It could have been great.

6 million viewers? what numbers are you looking at?

    • eliott256

That’ll be the numbers for all of the viewings that week or however Showtime work their ratings.

  • eliott256

Weeds has been on fire lately, but I’m really hoping next year is the last one.

And I’ve been loving The Big C (except the girl who played Precious who apparently can’t act in this)

Last year, I would have prayed for Weeds to get cancelled, but boy have they proved me wrong this year. Once again, Weeds is awesome. A dramatic improvement on the 5th season. I do hope the 7th year is the last though. The Big C however grew old on me after a few episodes, too formulaic and I have given that up

  • karin

why??????? weeds was great 3 or 5 years ago and the big C is pathetic

  • karin

no projects for showtime anymore?Dexter is boring now, only nurse jackie ?
but HBO is pathetic too,the scorcese thing is unbelievable,so baddddddddd

    • BC

Dexter is boring now? What show are *you* watching? Last season was awesome.

  • one_love

    GOOooooo WEEDS!! I’m thrilled!!

  • @Karin

dude, why did yo bother to read it if you hate the show so much? You need a hobby chicka

I stopped watching Weeds season 2 or 3, not sure, but I love the Big C. I agree that the Precious actress isn’t a very good actress in this show, which is all I’ve seen her in. Does anybody know if In Treatment is ever coming back? Thanks!

    • Mr sd

In Treatment is back at the end of Oct.

  • stu

i gave up Showtime when they canceled Queer Has Folk & replaced it w/ that fishy show The L Word. L=Loser…show.

    • Mr. So And So

lol they don’t need YOU watching anyways

  • Booger9

The Big C was cool – Weeds has gotten stupid…eliot256

  • Mr. So And So

Lol at the loser who “hope” a show gets canceled or finishes up….aren’t there bigger more important things in the world to hope for? Having said that, great news about weeds.

    • Mr. So And So

….oh yeah, when Heroes started to suck…I didn’t hope for chit I just stop watching it…it’s pretty simple to do…

      • DIY

of course there’s more important things to hope for but this is a comment section about a couple of tv shows. I don’t think it’s fair to call that poster a loser for posting their hopes for the show here. It would’ve been great if Weeds had a kick-a$$ final season this year and went out with a bang because the show is starting to slow down but I don’t want to stop watching until the end. But yeah whatever eventually I probably just stop watching it.

  • jpratm

    SWEET !!!

  • bazinga!

I agree that Weeds has been on a roll this season. I love love love Mary Louise Parker and additionally love the dynamic between Nancy/Nathalie and Andy/Randy in this last episode. I felt so bad for Silas finally finding his way in college, and then having it yanked away…oh so sad…and Shane, what can you say? Future serial killer? This show definitely needs to be an hour. I find myself sitting down, and just when I’m getting into it it’s over. Ah well, always leave um wanting more….

  • Anita

I love watching Weeds. Andy is my favorite of course. So glad it will be on next year.

The Big C is my new favorite show. I think the writing and the acting is fantastic! I love all the characters. Please keep them coming.
