'Castle' Exclusive: Lyle Lovett lands unearthly role

Tags: , , News, Scoop

lyle-lovettImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesRemember how much fun Nathan Fillion had pretending he was Indiana Jones on that episode of Castle last season? We expect he’ll enjoy this year’s alien-abduction-themed hour just as much. Especially with Lyle Lovett as a guest star.

The singer and occasional actor (The Player, The Opposite of Sex) has signed on to play Agent Darryl Shafer, a shadowy government figure who detains and interrogates Castle (Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) as they investigate the death of a prominent astrophysicist whose body was found in her car—a victim of explosive decompression. Was she killed in a decompression chamber and her body moved, or did she die in space? Shafer wants to know what Castle and Beckett already know; they want to know what he’s been hiding.

In the end, they’ll all have to work together to, per a Castle source, “unmask the real killer before he disappears off the face of the earth, taking with him evidence of secrets that, if revealed, could challenge everything we currently believe.”

Lovett will appear in this season’s ninth episode.

He didn’t dress up as Indiana Jones. He dressed up as Malcolm Reynods, his charater from Firefly.

    • MS

Before anyone says anything, it should have been “Reynolds,” not “Reynods.”

    • Jennifer

Michael is referring to the Curse of the Mummy episode, not the Halloween episode you are thinking of.

      • MS

i know you’re right and I thought about it. I didn’t think that this qualified as dressing up as Indiana Jones, but maybe that’s what the writer meant.

  • Amanda

He dressed up as Mal in “Vampire Diaries”. In “Wrapped Up in Death,” they were investigating at a museum with a mummy, and he found an Indiana Jones hat, and pretending to “discover” the mummy, and he opened the sarcophagus.

    • CharlieBlue

I think you mean “Vampire Weekend” if you refer to the Halloween episode.

      • Robin

Enough with the all the ridiculously anal corrections.

        Jeez! OCD! OCD!

  • Ann S

If they don’t reference X-files, they have failed in the alien-abduction realm.

    • CharlieBlue

There might be, since it acoording to IMDb is directed by Bryan Spicer – director of on XF ep called “Three of a Kind”. I really hope so.

    • JennaW

The setup sounds a bit like the X-Files episode “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space”

  • BJ Wanlund

I’ll be very surprised if they don’t quote liberally from Star Trek and Star Wars.

Nice. I like Lyle quite a bit. Hopefully, they’ll let Lyle be funny, as he does dry humor very well.

Explosive decompression? I’m sure there will be exploding head jokes, and they could throw in a Firefly reference about airlocks (see Ariel).

  • Amy

    Love Castle.!!!!!!

  • Brian

I’m thinking references to X-Files, Star Trek (probably a comment on whether or not they liked the new movie too), Men in Black, Star Wars, and, of course, Firefly/Serenity. Maybe Superman too. Long shot–Alf.

Sounds fun….but I expect nothing less from the brilliance that is Castle!

  • Nerwen Aldarion

How can you not love this show?

  • Sable

Castle hit a grand slam home run with last night’s premiere episode.
I would love to see more of the former Firefly cast guest starring. Jewel Staite and Sean Maher were delightful in their episode of Warehouse 13.

  • Lisa

Castle is a great show. Nathon Fillion is a hoot. Don’t you mean Mal from Firefly?

  • maryc

They need to reference X-Files and Close Encounters at the VERY least.

  • Alex

    I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • NJRae

My guesses are X-Files, Alien, Close Encounters, Star Wars, 2001, Battlestar Galactica, ET, Dune and the Last Starfighter.

As a way out there guess Coneheads.
