'Dancing with the Stars': Boos weren't directed at Sarah Palin, show says

sarah-bristol-palinImage Credit: Adam Larkey/ABC via Getty ImagesGiven the negative reaction to those boos heard during last night’s telecast of Dancing With the Stars, the producers will go the extra mile during this evening’s telecast and show that the crowd was directing their disdain toward the judges, not the visiting Sarah Palin. Many viewers apparently misunderstood that the boos were meant for Palin, who had attended the show to watch her daughter Bristol and was later interviewed on camera by host Tom Bergeron.

Bergeron told EW today that the audience actually had a bone to pick with the judges and the scores they gave Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough. “We are going to show footage from another camera angle. Thank God we had a camera on the grassy knoll!” quips Bergeron. “You’ll see the judges basically taking on the audience. They were upset that they gave Jennifer Grey an 8.

“It was sort of the ballroom equivalent of the Shirley Sherrod tape,” added Bergeron, in reference to the Georgia State Director of Rural Development for the U.S. Department of Agriculture who was forced to resign after video excerpts of her NAACP speech went viral. “It was taken out of context. I can see how people made that assumption. That’s the great thing about live TV. You never know what’s going to happen. As innocuous as it may be, sitting down and talking to the mom of one of the contestants, regardless of her notoriety, it’s turned into this major imbroglio. You gotta love that!”

Bergeron doesn’t regret taking the time to chat up Bristol’s mom, however. “I think it was worth the time to talk to Sarah. Politics aside, she’s charming. I was talking to her as a dad to a mom. You’d have to be crazy to have one of the most recognizable personalities in your audience and not take a moment to talk to her.”

That’s not the only clarification that Stars will offer up this evening. Bergeron plans to give judge Bruno Tonioli the opportunity to amend — or take back — his negative comments about Michael Bolton. (Tonioli told the singer last night that he performed the worst jive in 11 seasons.) Bolton and partner Chelsie Hightower earned 12 out of a possible 30 points and appear to be prime candidates for elimination this evening. ”That was over the top,” Bergeron said about Tonioli’s critique. “It’s one thing to criticize someone’s dance, but Bruno deserved to be chastised by Len. It’s a widespread sentiment.”

Americans taking something out of context? Yeah, right.

    • Zombie Jesus

It’s almost as crazy as saying that Americans also constantly crave attention ;-)

      • J IN SAN JOSE

        This from someone called “Zombie”?????

      • Peter

Someone called “Zombie Jesus” who has to post first and multiple times.

      • Jaded

And almost as crazy as saying that zombies aren’t for complete losers

      • James

I like how the fat in her arms is bulging over the tops of her gloves – HOT!

      • Ruth

James you need to come out of the closet and quit wearing women’s clothing…

    • rc

      what do you mean american’s?
what are you doing here if you don’t like america? you piece of
crap, i would love to meet you!
i’d show you something about american’s

      • rc is an idiot

rc- ever thought that this website could be read by someone outside of the US?

      • ASQuiros

@RC Wow, so freedom of speech guarantees a citizen the right to voice his/her opinion and you the right to assault them for it? Thanks for representing American values, um, NOT

      • CMS

And you’re just as dumb as the OP!!!!

      • SalParadise

Just like an American to not understand the difference between the plural and possessive forms.

        Nice job, teatard.

      • JENNY

“i’d show you something about american’s”

Please don’t let it be that we don’t know how to capitalize and use apostrophes where they are not needed… I hate being the grammar police but really, if you’re going to go on a rant, at least try to *sound* halfway intelligent.

        Sigh… nevermind…

        PS – It’s Americans

      • Rob Morgan

Show us something about Americans? hey there, guy, pull your pants up. We are NOT impressed.

      • James

I’ve met RC – in the bathroom at a truck stop along the highway in Kentucky. He has a very purty mouth.

      • Drucie Leigh

How long have you been fighting mental health–and winning?

      • OG

RC – you embarrass Americans. There is no apostrophe in Americans. If you use an apostrophe, then the word means ownership by an American. So get educated first before posting anything.

      • Chappel

On behalf of all the rest of America I am begging you not to defend us anymore.

      • Andre

        Here comes an S!

      • Jerri

wow. RC, such apostrophe abuse. Go back to school.

    • CMS

Yeah, cuz taking things out of context is totally an American trait and not one of those crazy traits of all humanity!!!! You’re so right!!!!

    • Rob Morgan

      Bravo!

    • slick

      Maybe they were saying…

      Boo…ristol! Boo…ristol!

      • Ethan

It’s like that Simpsons episode: “Are they saying ‘boo’ or ‘Boo-urns’?”.

  • Lee Brooks

Boo already, can’t she take a hint?

    • ks

I wish she would but she craves attention, I boo’d her

  • jezuzhc

i want my president to look like sarah… she just needs briefing thats all………..

  • Soupy Starr

Amazing how Lynette Rice manages to recap the Shirley Sherrod debacle without once mentioning her comments were taken out of context by a right-wing blogger. More tea, Lynette?

  • joejoe

Apparently this Dancing with the Star has a political agenda.

  • LoveBug68

And now our comments are being moderated. Free Speech for everyone…unless you don’t like what they are saying. Looks like this blog has taken its side…the side of Sarah and the Tea Party. Freedom for all (unless we don’t like them). Boo indeed!

    • Reason Prevails

      Agreed. Boo, indeed.

      Shame on you, EW.

    • Katja

Comments are being moderated? EW has had problems with comments disappearing and not showing up when you post them. Is that what you mean? Because that’s been going on for a LONG time. Happens to me all the time, on even the most innocuous comments.

  • JAC

Of course they were booing her. The majority of Americans hate her and want her to go away. The Vanity Fair article explains it all.

    • Deb

The majority of Americans do not hate her. You believe too much of what the liberal media is feeding you.

      • tomm

Then why is Sarah on liberal ABC?

There is no liberal media bias, they just want sensationalism.

      • Well…

Correction… just A LOT of Americans can’t stand her. She’s a divicive personality. She does speak to a number of people in this country for sure, her popularity can’t be denied.

But believe me… many, MANY can’t stand the sound of her voice nor the disgusting, backward, and polarizing attitudes to… well just about everything.

My guess… the boos were for her, and the producers are just scared.

      • Michael TX

Not even half of the Republicans support her.

      • Erin

The majority of Americans may no HATE her but a majority do feel she is unqualified to be president or hold public office.

Tomm, Sarah is on “liberal” ABC because she seeks attention and the spotlight, regardless of the network.

      • @Deb

Entertainment Weekly is one of your so-called liberal media outlets. Why the hell are you even here?

      • Rob Morgan

I HATE HER…..PULL YOUR HEAD OUTTA THAT ORIFICE AND GET A LIFE!

      • sara

pssssst – The majority of Americans have functioning brains and DO hate her. It’s just imbociles like you who worship at the alter of that disgusting hate filled cow.

      • Ted

No, they were certainly booing Sarah, everyone in America sees her as a dumb clown don’t forget.

    • patikle

If you are so certain that the “majority of Americans hate her” what are you so afraid of?

      • lynette

I agree with you. These people who say that Americans hate her are just jealous.

      • mallory j

“These people who say that Americans hate her are just jealous.”

haha, what?! it’s the Americans themselves, in those crazy things called polls, that are the ones who claim they hate her! unless you argument is that some 60% of the country is “jealous,” you make very little sense.

in other words, your cult-like devotion is showing.

      • jp

        Lynette, Americans DO hate her.

      • Jean Genie

How mature of the Teabots – if they’re not saying the rest of us are jealous, they accuse us of being “afraid” of her. I don’t fear Sarah – I just think she’s an annoying AWing drama junkie.

    • Ruth

That is so inaccurate she is more popular than President Obama. The only women who dislike her are women who are considered ugly. The men that dislike her are either hen pecked by their ugly wives or have been castrated at an early age.

      • wakeforce

And you are exactly what we have come to expect from the tea partiers, people like Ruth. Exactly what we’ve been saying all along about you “people”!

      • amy

uhhh, Sarah is not an attractive woman. Those of us who are actually attractive hate her for entirely different reasons.

      • Chappel

Where did you learn those “facts”? Fox News?

      • Jean Genie

Ruth, you’re so wrong – plenty of men like her. And for all the wrong reasons, too.

    • Andre

Why would anybody care about her anymore? Her party lost the election, she isn’t VP and she quit her State Governor job. She is quite literally just some woman from Alaska now that we all happen to know the name of. If I saw her somewhere I would ignore her, not out of hatred, but out of ambivalence.

  • Kevin

Boo to the the mistakes in this article. EW get an editor

  • amerealist

    You lie!!!

  • Atina

Come on, Tom, why not interview the parents or loved ones of each contestant? Why play favorites? Sure Bristol’s mom is famous, but so is Jennifer Gray’s husband, and Rick Fox’s girlfriend, etc.

    • Atina

Oh, and, Tom, she’s charming? Yeah, about as charming as a snake in the grass. Good for you; you like her I get it, but to say “politics aside”? come on, this woman lives on and off of her political views, so how can we disregard them?

    • lynette

It must be because she is the only parent that would take time to watch her child perform…or maybe she is the only parent that has time to watch their child perform.

      • Well…

Or because Bristol’s “celebrity” is because of her.

      • Mavis

Except that Sharon Osborne was in the audience every week to watch Kelly perform last season. Did they interview her? She is also a famous person. . .

      • Rick

There was an agenda….ratings. It worked. Btw. Bristol was an incredibly horrible dancer. Her scores were stupid high, shows the bias to keep her for ratings.

      • Erin

Or she is the only parent to use her child’s presence on the show to ensure more media attention on her.

      • Huh?

But she’s not the only contestant who’s parents have been prominently featured. Mohammed Ali’s daughter was a contestant and they showed him and his entourage several times. They didn’t interview him about her but they interviewed her about him. They showed Ozzy and Sharon prominently and asked them a question or two about their daughter’s dancing as well.

      • Ruth

The reason they didn’t interview Muhammad Ali is because he didn’t want to be interviewed on camera since his is suffering from parkinsons disease. As for Bristol’s dancing she is great and at the top of the pack. If you don’t like her then don’t watch the show. Your all just jealous of Sarah because she is more popular than Barry Hussein Obama.

      • wakeforce

Dear Old retarded senile Nazi Ruth it’s you’re not your. Keep proving my earlier point, k?

    • Mrs. Frisby

Who is Jennifer Grey’s famous husband? Seriously, I don’t know.

      • cronest

You may be thinking of Jennifer Grey’s father who is Joel Grey, the actor.

      • wakeforce

He played Old Christine’s ex-husband on The New Adventures of…

      • Katja

Clark Gregg. He also plays the agent from S.H.I.E.L.D. in the Iron Man movies, if that means anything to you.

  • Bill Neboyskey

They should boo her. She needs a taste of what “REAL” Americans think about her!

    • noboho

LOL! Real Americans are the ones supporting her. Get out much?

      • doug

completely untrue. In fact the americans that do support her support a fascist democracy. Look up the definition of fascism before replying.

      • doug

Is it just me or does bristol look like snookie

      • geo

        We’ll see…

      • sandawg

So true. The Tea Party is indeed a fascist movement, but sadly they are not educated enough to understand.

      • Bill Neboyskey

        Apparently more than you do!

      • al

The only fascists in this great “America The Beautiful” are the libs, they can’t stand to be americans, they hate it.

      • @al

Al, please go back to school or read a book. That’s a run-on sentence with improper usage of quotation marks and incorrect capitalization.
Also look up fascism because you clearly don’t understand the meaning of the word.

    • LoveBug68

I hate the term “real” americans. As if people who live in certain parts of America are more American. If you are a citizen and pay taxes you are a real american. I know Fox news thinks otherwise…for instance I heard a female anchor on that network say once “Hawaii, where many americans vacation”. OR LIVE! Since its Par of the United States of America! Grrrr – on either side I do not like that phrasing!

      • fred

“Hawaii, where many americans vacation”. WTF is wrong with that?!
Many Americans vacation in Fla., Calif., New York, etc. Is it wrong to say that, too?

      • LoveBug68

Why would you say where American’s vacation? Its where American’s live. She was clearly confused by that…but that was during the Tsunami watch of hysteria.

    • al

Alright Sarah keep stirring the pot, Liberals can’t stand the heat.

      • Rob Morgan

Pot? wow, Friend, that pot is the toilet bowl.

    • Ruth

LOL Real Americans love her. The socialists and communists that have infiltrated America are the ones that dislike her.

      • Jean Genie

Do you think she’s a “great” mom, too? Maybe Bristol wouldn’t have run into Levi’s arms for comfort – then gotten knocked up – if mommie dearest wasn’t so busy making a fool of herself. And let’s not forget Sarah using her disabled baby son as a publicity tool …

  • Kari1

lol @ the show people trying to tell us what we saw was not what happened. Media again trying to manipulate how we think. If this had happened to any Democrat media would be running with false narrative”AMERICA HATES DEMS AND BOOS THEM”. SHE GOT BOOED, DEAL WITH IT,THE END.

    • lynette

Oh, you got the other side of the story.

    • Ruth

Another ugly girls comment, go figure

      • wakeforce

And I bet you were just the prettiest girl in the world, which explains why your parents gave you the ugly-girl name of Ruth.
        Sorry for your miserable existence!

      • Chappel

I bet when you jump into a swimming pool other people scramble out while screaming.

      • Jean Genie

        Ruth, you sound fat.

  • Peter

And why should we believe the new footage is what really happened?

    • tomm

yep, beleive in what you want to beleive. Everything is a conspiracy.

      • Peter

        Not a conspiracy, damage control.

    • lynette

Peter, you can believe anything you want. It is what it is.

    • noboho

No new footage. If you DVR’d it, watch it again and make your own decison.

      • Peter

“We are going to show footage from another camera angle. Thank God we had a camera on the grassy knoll!” quips Bergeron.

      • Peter

And by the way, Bergeron, nice comparing the booing of a hopeless former VP candidate to the assassination of a President with that metphor.

      • Peter

And by the way, Bergeron, nice comparing the booing of a hopeless former VP candidate to the assassination of a President with that metaphor.

      • Peter

And by the way, EW, nice crappy comment software.

    • ASQuiros

Do you think they’re shopping a tampered tape?

  • noboho

Much ado about nothing. She was there supporting her daughter, get over it. Who, BTW was alot better than that dolt Bolton Situation. They need to go.

    • Sandy

She wasn’t there for her daughter, give me a break. She was there for herself-free press time. What a jerk!

      • Peter

And her daughter is only there because of her.

      • noboho

So what about the others who come out in support of their dancer. They’re only there for publicity? Give ME a break. Nothing political was asked or said.

      • Peter

Politics is the only reason Bristol is on the show. What makes her a star? Being the daughter of a politician.

      • al

Go Sarah!! Liberals just can’t stand the heat. I love it. I know you were there to watch your daughter dance and the liberals idiots are making a big deal out of it. Go Sarah, keep the pot stirred.

      • Ruth

Sandy you must be one of the ugly girls?

      • Well…

        Muslim

      • Ruth is a Guy

Ruth, you wish you were an ugly “girl”.

  • doug

    I call BS.

If that were true then the two dancers that were there, Jennifer Grey, et al, would not have been confused as to why the audience was booing.

    • JenRem

      I call ignorance.
It’s also possible that Jennifer thought the scores were good, the audience didn’t think so, that would also cause confusion.

      P.S. to everyone…
They’ve had delayed boos before, despite as to what’s going on.
