'Caprica' First Look: The Cylons are coming!

It’s great that Caprica wants to distinguish itself from the show that gave it life, Battlestar Galactica, but would it kill them to toss in Read the full post.

I really like Caprica and am looking forward to the new season. I miss BSG. I never watched it and then caught the last 20 minutes of the last show series finale and ordered everything from 2003 onward and watched it all in a marathon session over a few weeks, read everything I could, downloaded the Jimi Hendrix version of All Along the Watch Tower and listened to that endlessly.

They’re right. Now would be the perfect time to tune in 2′Caprica’. Admittedly, the prequel was confusing, but now’s the time.

Caprica is a magnificent exploration of the imagination. It is clearly the most unique and clever science fiction plot ever devised. Sign me up for the DVD’s

I’m really looking forward to this show being on again. I’ve been re-watching the episodes on Hulu and am impressed all over again. It’s a great show, and I really hope it gets renewed.

Love the show. It’s not sci-fi, it’s drama. The characters are great – hope it will go for more than 4 seasons !

New viewers should ignore the BSG connection and watch for the great ideas: virtual reality (holobands and New Cap City), merged intelligence, cultures of 12 colonies.

I DID watch the first half of this show but I found it to be really boring. Furthermore, it doesn’t seem plausible that it keeps the BSG history in tact. In this “prequel” Bill Adama is 11, but in BSG, he’s in his 70s. So basically, at best, in order not to screw with the history of BSG, Caprica has 60 years to create *functioning* cylons, have them become an integral part of their society, have them rebel and have the first cylon war, then have them disappear (but wait, according to the miniseries, they disappear for FORTY years!) only to return and blow the 12 colonies all to hell. So actually, they only have 20 years for that first part. It just doesn’t seem possible that they can do all that in the amount of time they have allotted themselves. Maybe this and the fact that it is boring are the reasons why I can’t give the show a chance…

Actually, 20 years is plenty of time. Technology adoption gets faster and faster – read Clayton Christensen’s Innovator’s Dilemma at how quickly new techs displace old techs now, compared to the past, so this is perfectly plausible. In Caprica / BSG, robotic tech has existed for years, but autonomy / artificial intelligence is the only recent breakthrough, which can then proliferate rapidly through all the computer / robotic infrastructure that already exists. That’s why it manifests / incubates within virtual worlds first, as they already exist.

sometimes i feel like caprica is too smart and dense with info/dept for the casual tv viewers, its not bsg, i for one while watching BSG was fascinating with the tidbits they’d give us about how the extermination of humans by cylons came about, how/why the children of men killed their creators, and now we get to see it, and people are complaining about this and that! not me! i’m loving every minute of it
