Exclusive: Tim Roth 'sad' that 'Lie to Me' is replacing 'Lone Star'

lie-to-meImage Credit: Isabella Vosmikova/FoxI know. Fox killed and buried Lone Star so quickly that it’s almost hard to be happy that its demise has led to the third-season premiere of Lie to Me being bumped up from Nov. 10 to…um, Monday (when it assumes the DOA drama’s time slot). But try to be happy anyway, okay? Series lead Tim Roth and I have even come up with five excellent reasons why you should forgive his show for jumping into Lone Star‘s grave.

5. He feels funny about the situation too. “What happened to Lone Star…I’m sad for those guys,” he says. “A lot of passion goes into making a TV show, [so] it must be very heartbreaking to have that happen.”

4. He truly feels that season 3 of Lie to Me “will be our strongest,” he says, adding that his character, profiler Cal, may look back as he moves forward. “We’ll go into his past more, and there are women who are going to come up in his life. The relationship he has with his daughter opens up as well as his relationship with Foster.”

3. In the wake of Ben’s shooting, the Lightman Group is playing a whole new ballgame. “Lightman cuts ties with the FBI,” Roth reveals. Luckily, “Ben is not dead…or is he?”

2. “The crooked cop played by Monique [Gabriela Curnen] comes back,” Roth says. And when she does, the question becomes, will Cal use their relationship to help Internal Affairs bust her?

1. There are guest stars galore—including a Gilmore Girls alum. David “Rory’s Dad” Sutcliffe has just sealed a deal to appear in episode 7 as a Tony Robbins type, Annette “Clark Kent’s Mom” O’Toole pops up in episode 4 as a woman with early-onset Alzheimer’s, and in episode 5, Battlestar Galactica‘s Tricia Helfer passes through as…actually, I don’t care what she passes through as. If she’s passing through, I’m there.

How about you? Will you forgive Fox for shooting down Lone Star and tune in, or can they just forget it? Don’t lie to me. (Reporting by Lynette Rice)

Hard to be happy?? Are you kidding me? Getting LTM back over a month sooner than expected is cause for celebration! This LTM fan is ecstatic!! Follow Tim on Twitter – he’s amazing! @TimRothLieToMe

    • GimplyGump ☺

      DITTO!

      • svetlana

I wish they would replay season 2! Just watched season 1 on DVD and was hoping to catch up before the 3rd season started.

    • Carrie #2

Double ditto!! I disliked Lone Star but Lie to Me is one of my shows so I’m very excited.

    • KEH

Lone Star was predictable to anyone who had seen 1-2 “con-artist with a heart” Shows…
On the other hand LTM writers clearly know they have savvy watchers and regular leave subtle tells from typical shows that create possible solutions that are not the right one. They know thier genre and challenge the assumptions of watchers who also know the genera.

    • idgie

Lone Star was really a cable show disguised as a Fox show. It was brillant and although the premise did not make for an easy watch was real life. Sons of Anarchy and Breaking Bad are usually difficult to watch due to their amoral center…yet they are brillantly written and acted, makes them must see TV. Grow up people. Real life is often difficult to watch but that does not mean it does not deserve merit and watching. The mistake was to present Lone Star as a prime time show and not a cable show. The audiences for cable shows are far more sophisticated and intelligent and prefer to watch quality programming as opposed to mainstream homogenized crap.

      • Sitting Bull

Careful there idgie. Get too fired up and you might fall off that high horse.

      • maggie

Lone Star in no way compares to SoA or BB. I have no problem watching a quality show with amoral lead characters. Dexter is one of my favorite shows, and he’s a serial killer. I’m also a fan of the Sopranos.

Lone Star was a nighttime soap opera that was poorly written and acted. The only thing that was difficult about watching it was trying to stay awake through the boredom.

“The audiences for cable shows are far more sophisticated and intelligent and prefer to watch quality programming as opposed to mainstream homogenized crap.”

This is one of the most uninformed and absurd comments I’ve ever read on this website. It was so ludicrous that it made me laugh. So thanks for the laugh idgie!

    • Rosa

LOVE Lie to me. So happy to have it back. Tim Roth is fantastic!

    • renee

i gave lone star two episodes and was ready to bounce it when i heard the network did it for me. it just wasn’t a good show. love lie to me. will miss mehki though.

    • kim

I’m sooo happy to see LTM again.
Iwatched the 1st episode of lone star and I didn’t lime it at all.

    • kim

I’m sooo happy to see LTM again.
Iwatched the 1st episode of lone star and I didn’t like it at all.

  • sudsy

We love Tim. Cant wait for Lie to me :)

    • Heidi

I’m sorry about Lone Star – I liked it and James Wolk was a find – but I’m happy to have Lie to Me back sooner than expected.

  • Jen Jen

Is Lie to Me really strong enough to deliver the magical numbers that the Fox execs are looking for in that timeslot? Could this be the death toll for Lie to Me now?

    • Di

that’s what I’m scared of, though I do LOVE Lie to Me.

    • Silent Rage

Magical numbers? With that kind of sarcasm it’s safe to assume you don’t follow ratings at all…Gossip Girl did better than Lonestar for Foxsake

    • as long as lie to me holds a good portion of house’s shrinking audience, it’ll be fine.

  • Jenna

i didn’t watch LoneStar so I’m happy LTM is coming back only a few weeks after its finale! Way better than a full hiatus. I dont mind!

  • Michael Sacal

    What’s Lone Star?

  • Natalie

I didn’t get the opportunity to watch Lone Star before they killed it but am totally thrilled with the early return of LTM!

  • sanlynn36

I really liked Lone Star; I wish they had given it time to gain an audience, which I think would have happened. Of course, CW didn’t help itself with it’s truly terrible, midleading show ads. At any rate, hope we see the lead guy around soon – he’s a talented actor and really adorable.

    • Matthew Thomas

It’s a Fox show not CW.

    • Matt

You didn’t watch much of Lone Star if you can’t even tell what channel it was on. Idiot.

  • abdo

Will i’m happy that LTM is back but WHY THE HELL they moved human target premiere to nov 10 ( can we get some answers ?)

    • kiran

Human target ll premiere on 1st itself……it ll move to friday frm nov

      • Matt

Human Target is coming back? I am very happy to hear that. I have heard nothing on it so I thought they canned that show. It is pretty good so I am happy it is coming back.

    • matt s

THIS IS A GREAT THING FOR HUMAN TARGET

It would have DIED on Fridays at 8–no doubt about it

When it comes back in November–it’ll be on Wednesdays at 8 (where it had aired last season) Belive me–I’d rather wait a month and a half and have the show have a fighting chance of living to see a 3rd season then having it premiere this Friday and seeing it die a quick and painful death. (added bonus—Fox will have baseball playoffs to hopefully promote it during as well.)

  • Michael Sacal

You know why Lone Star was canceled?

    The Schwartz wasn’t with it.

    • DV

      Hee hee!

      • matt s

Ironically The Schwartz was over on the CW competing against it.

  • Macster

I’m really happy that Lie To Me is coming back a month early, but Fox has got to get the word out. They’ve never been too great about promoting the show IMHO and with announcing it less than a week before the premiere they have to get a move on.

    • KarenL

      Couldn’t agree more!

  • Elizabeth

I’m sad that viewers didn’t even bother to tune into Lone Star and would rather watch Gossip Girl, The Event, or Dancing with the Stars. It just goes to show the degradation of society that people would rather indulge in mindless crap than a show that was actually atypical.

However, I do hope that Lie to Me is able to maintain strong numbers in the timeslot and get its well deserved back 9. Tim Roth is fantastic!

P.S. – I’d love the powers that be of LTM if they cast James Wolk in an episode. If nothing else, I will miss seeing his face on my TV screen.

    • Marcus

Lone Star WAS mindless crap, dear, and so is everything else on TV. Shove your faux intellectualism where the sun doesn’t shine.

      • Why are you on a TV story on a TV blog if…uh…you don’t like TV?

    • Jake

You’re idolizing a show that promotes womanising and you’re talking about OTHER shows degrading society? Yeah, ok.

      • Elizabeth

Can you read? I never said anything about idolizing the show, just that I was sad it didn’t even get a chance. Now I’m just waiting for The Event to follow the same route FlashForward did last season.

    • Sitting Bull

You heard it here first folks, Lone Star being cancelled is in direct correlation to the degradation of society.
On a side note, somebody takes the Fall Schedule WAYYY too seriously.

  • Peter

Shows get canceled quick every year. Why is this one getting so much press?

    • Macster

probably because the critics loved it. its a blow to their ego when the rest of the population doesn’t share their opinion ;-)

      • Blair

Critically acclaimed = Huge pile of crap.

    • matt s

i think its cause it was a relatively high profile show to go bust so quickly. (Major Night, Major Timeslot, Major Network) If the first cancellation of the year had been like The Whole Truth or Better With You or Outlaw or Hellcats–you prob wouldn’t read as much about it given that none of those 3 are as high profile despite having better known celebrities attached to them–the fact that they air on Wednesday or Friday nights and havn’t received as much publicity tells you that they weren’t as hotly anticipated.

  • FINCH

I’m happy that this results in “Human Target” getting its old time slot back. Now if someone could do something to help “The Good Guys”…

    • Nick

AMEN to that! I think “THe Good Guys” is hilarious and am so scared it is going to get canned here soon. I hope we at least get a full season out of it before they toss it aside.

    • Diva

Wait! Now I have to wait for another entire month to watch Human Target and it’s on at the same time Undercovers is? This sucks.

      • matt s

Good news Nick—The full season for The Good Guys was already filmed—they did i believe 20 episodes altogether–that werer written, shot, and edited together long before their run started—so fox will still more than likely continue airing the eps they have left—however i wouldn’t expect them to order another batch unless matt nix throws some sort of insentive their way (and he just might–Burn Notice has been very very profitable for Fox Studios–who produce that show and reap the profits from dvd sales)

  • Peebles

Can this happen to Outsourced so we can get Parks and Rec. back early? That would be glorious!

    • matt s

sadly it looks like Outsourced is doing decently–if it can hold on to a solid percentage of those who watched it last week–it might stick around the full season which means i’m not sure what for Parks And Rec—i’m guessing nbc will bench one of their shows at one point so Parks and Rec can come on–if they were brave they would try it in place of The Apprentice but we all know half hour comedies can’t possibly work at 10 right?

  • Jaded

SO happy Lie To Me is coming back on! I didn’t care for Lone Star even though I really tried to like it. Lie To Me is such a fantastic show and I’m glad we won’t have to wait until Nov for new episodes! And Tim Roth is hot!!!
