Fall 2010 ratings: 'Law & Order: LA' has strong debut

law-and-order-la-ulrichImage Credit: Dean Hendler/NBCThe latest installment from the Law & Order franchise brought some much-needed good news to the Peacock network on Wednesday. Law & Order: Los Angeles won its 10 p.m. timeslot among adults 18-49 (3.1 rating/9 share) and in viewers (10.5 million) and boosted NBC’s performance in the timeslot by 63% versus last year. L&O: LA is now the second most successful new show among adults 18-49 this season, behind CBS’ Hawaii Five-0. Each 18-49 rating point represents 1.31 million viewers.

CBS still won the night in viewers (12.3 million) and adults 18-49 (3.2/9), thanks to another strong performance by Survivor (12.1 million). It will be interesting to see if the show maintains such a healthy audience after the older tribe made the (bad) decision to oust ex-NFL coach Jimmy Johnson. At 9 p.m, Criminal Minds dominated in viewers with (14.3 million) but the new drama The Defenders had to settle for second place in eyeballs (10.3 million) and adults 18-49 because of L&O: LA.

Fox, which aired a two-hour installment of Hell’s Kitchen, came in second for the night among adults 18-49 and fourth in viewers (6.3 million). NBC came in third in the demo and second in viewers (8.9 million) while ABC finished fourth among adults 18-49 and third in viewers (7.28 million). Modern Family had another great night and won its timeslot in just about every demographic but it dipped 12% versus last year among adults. Meanwhile, ABC’s new drama The Whole Truth continues to struggle at 10: It was down 13% versus last week’s premiere among 18-49 and only averaged 4.71 million.

Thought is was a poor imitation of the original. Only watched half the show and turned it off… where was the amazing opening sequence? where was the dum dum sound effect?? wont watch it again.

    • shelby

What show are you talking about???

      • Chris

        L&O

    • SirLizard

JohnB, you clearly didn’t even watch. I think that you’ve based your post on things that you read BEFORE the episode even aired. Many websites claimed that there would be different theme music and that the CH-CHUNG sound effect wouldn’t be used, but those claims were all wrong. The theme is still there, and the CH-CHUNG was used throughout the episode, just like on every other incarnation of the L&O franchise.

      • York

Um, I watched the entire premiere of L&O Los Angeles, and the opening theme was radically changed and shortened, with no faces of the actors shown during the opening credits, as has been the norm for this franchise since 1990. There was also NO use of the gavel-pounding CH-CHUNG sound.

    • Boof

They’re ALL poor imitations of the original.

      • maria

which is why i never compare a spin-off to the original. if i compared all spin-offs to the originals, there wouldn’t be much that i’d watch on tv

    • Susan

I was bored 20 minutes into it.

      • Elizabeth

That’s exactly when I was bored enough to change the channel.

      • Dicazi

        Me too.

  • graeme

    Cougar Town?

    • Chris

That show was creepy last night.

      • JEAN

        Agreed. Creepy!

      • Rion

I was too busy laughing to care. Cougar Town is the funniest show on television.

    • It had a 2.9 in the 18-49 (down like 16%). I don’t know about total viewers, though.

    • Brett

“Cougar Town” is a poor imitation of a sitcom.

      • Flip

It’s not trying to be a sitcom, hun.

  • NY

The ratings were strong because L&M die-hards tuned in to see how this version would play out. But after the debacle last night, fewer folks will return and the ratings will drop. What were they thinking!

  • Targia

everybody loves Law and Order and it is another one we can to the lsit to watch

    • angie

Who is “everybody”, I for one do not!! So that blows your “everybody” reference. I am sure Law and order-LA will drop in ratings next week.

      • K

        “Everybody” is a generic term.

      • SirLizard

No, K, “everybody” is NOT a “generic term.” It specifically means everyone. I do love the L&O franchise, but it is wrong to say that “everybody loves Law & Order,” or to say that everybody loves ANYTHING.

      • Brett

Oh, come on. Everyone loved Raymond. And everybody hated Chris.

      • Trey

        And everybody hurts.

      • Will

This is why I love EW message boards

      • Gwen

And everybody wants to rule the world.

      • Sam J

and everybody wants to be free…

  • Sarah

I wonder how “Undercovers” and SVU did, as well as the rest of the ABC comedies.

    • undercovers did pretty badly — down 23% and it had a 1.6 in the demo. svu did well — i think it won the 9:30 slot?

    • Edina

I hope NBC gives “Undercovers” a chance to rally — the first ep was slow, but last night’s was much more fun.

  • Jelana

L&O LA — not good, and made me really, really miss the original. Sad.

  • Chris Noth

They couldn’t do a better job casting than Skeet Ulrich? wtf

    • maria

i happen to like skeet ulrich. i think he was awesome in jericho. i enjoyed lola last night. no, its not as good as the original, but it wasn’t terrible. it was entertaining which is why i watch tv in the first place

    • Cjo

seriously! He looked so stiff and uncomfortable. I will give him two more eps.I never judge a show on it’s 1st episode.

  • Maxime

They should get actors to play themself is ficticious cases!

    • Maxime

      Known actors

  • RK

A cop procedural in LA using a hackneyed formula. I watched something on Betty Ford instead.

  • ADC

I didn’t really watch anything last night. I’m not up for another installment of L&O (even though I like SU) or Hell’s Kitchen (the seasons are too close together). Since Top Chef Desserts is such a waste, I actually just read a book lsat night. Tuesdays and Thursdays (and sometimes Mondays) are the only good tv days imo.

  • Chris

No Ordinary Family debuted to a 3.2 in the demo which would make LOLA the 3rd best series debut this season in that demo.

  • robinepowell

There has been one sucessful L&O spin-off, or is everyone forgeting about SVU? You can tell when a show is doing good, because of all the celebs that appear on it.

As for LOLA, why not wait until the next set of DAs show up, in next week’s episode. Also there’s a lietenant to view and the DA. ;)

I myself can’t wait to hear the theme song.

  • AuntieMM

Sorry to say but it was boring. Have no desire to watch again.

    • Blue Silver

Here’s an idea: Why doesn’t everyone here just READ A BOOK, instead?

  • Jeff from Jersey; yes New Jersey

Memo to Dick Wolf: A good episode to mark LOLA but a couple of things. 1. No introduction? Not good. 2. No cast intros after the title card? Not wise. 3. Only two sound effects (boom, boom) for the entrire show? What in the name of Appointment TV is going on? Tradition Mr. Wolf. You gotta have it.

  • Adam

The Whole Truth will be the next cancellation of the season. Why is it that ABC is having such a hard time with shows on Wednesday at 10, right after the comedy block? First Eastwick, then Ugly Betty, now The Whole Truth? They should have just kept Eastwick. Not a fantastic show, but a nice guilty pleasure.
