Head of ABC News will resign post

Categories: Television, TV Biz

ABC News President David Westin will resign his post after 13 years of service. He sent an email to staffers Monday that said while “we’ve put in place news anchors on all of our programs” over the last nine months, the division also “went through a very difficult transformation made necessary by changes in our business and its economics.” One news report says that Westin, 58, had a long-running feud with parent company Disney over making the division more profitable. Though ABC News has made significant gains over the last year – Diane Sawyer has maintained respectable ratings on World News while Nightline has managed to flourish in late night opposite the talk shows – it continues to rank No. 2 behind NBC in the mornings and evenings.

Westin joined the division in March of 1997 and will remain its chief through the end of the year while ABC/Disney TV Group President Anne Sweeney finds a replacement.  Sweeney released this statement Monday: “For the past 13 years, David Westin has proved himself a tireless advocate for ABC News, effectively guiding the group through some of the most seismic industry, and divisional, changes imaginable. During that time, he helped reinvent our news organization, and positioned us for great success going forward. I’m certain David will be as successful in whatever future endeavors he chooses to pursue. I will be announcing a new President of ABC News in the near future.”

Summer shows: 'America's Got Talent' was tops, but 'The Gates' didn't close the deal with viewers

Categories: Television, TV Ratings

summer-showsImage Credit: Chris Haston/NBC; Jeff Samaripa/ABC; Brian Bowen Smith/Fox;Summer repeats are so over: TV fans had lots of original fare to choose from on the broadcast networks over the last three months. The Big Four networks programmed tons of fresh shows from June to August, some of which was burned off episodes from canceled shows (hi, ‘Til Death and Three Rivers!) but most of which was specially-produced fare for those hot, summer nights. NBC, no surprise, attracted the most viewers with the return of America’s Got Talent (11.82 million), but another edition of The Bachelorette (9.92 million) pulled in some respectable numbers for ABC.

It was some of the new scripted shows that did the most damage. Despite a fair amount of promotion, ABC struck out with new series like Scoundrels and The Gates – a shame since the former featured some pretty lovable TV stars like Carlos Bernard (24) and David James Elliott (JAG). Given how much money the alphabet probably sunk into these shows, they’re sure to go down as the biggest disappointments of Summer 2010. Ditto for The Bridge on CBS – an import from Canada that was lucky to attract a tick over 3 million.

So what did you like the best? Reality shows, of course. TV viewers seem to prefer mindless fare on their broadcast networks while relying on the cable networks to satiate their hunger for scripted shows over the summer (HBO’s True Blood and AMC’s Rubicon were on the top of my season pass list). Jimmy Kimmel, in clay? 'Bones' promo pic serves up food for thought: First Look!

Categories: Bones, Fall TV, First Look

bones-groupImage Credit: Brian Bowen Smith/FoxWhat are we to make of Fox’s just-revealed season 6 Bones promo art? Should we deduce that the show goes great with lo mein? (It does… I’ve tried it.) Should we infer that after digesting any given episode we’ll be hungry for more in just an hour? (That’s true, too… am I right?) Or should we simply think to ourselves, “Isn’t it cute that they all have so much fun while solving grisly murders!”? Yes, that’s what I’m going with. But don’t let me stop you from offering up your own interpretations below.

Fox’s newly unveiled promo art for House’s fall comeback features Dr. Crankypants surrounded by not only at-long-last lover Cuddy but also all of his colleagues… in bed, no less! Does this suggest the emergence of a kinder, gentler anti-hero? Is he dreaming? Are we? Have a look and decide for yourself!

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'House,' 'Grey's,' 'Bones,' 'Chuck,' 'Gossip Girl,' and more!

Question: Where is the Hugh Laurie interview you promised us from the Emmys?! House fans are an impatient lot! —Gillian
Ausiello:
First off, simmer yourself. I’ve had a lot on my plate the past few days, if you hadn’t noticed. Second, the interview is RIGHT. HERE.

So they’re finally going there with Huddy.
HUGH LAURIE:
It seems that way.

Scared?
LAURIE:
I’m scared for him. Terrified. But so far so good. Baby steps.

Are you happy they finally took the plunge?
LAURIE:
I care less about what happens than how it happens. And if you do it right, it will work. And if we don’t do it right, nothing works. But I think we’ve danced around the idea long enough; it was time to take some action.

Is it safe to say that if it doesn’t work with Huddy it won’t work with anyone?
LAURIE:
That’s a possibility. He might be fatally flawed.

Question: Please give me some scoop about Jenny’s return to Gossip Girl! —Giovanni
Ausiello:
I was right. Jenny’s reappearance is directly connected to Tim Gunn’s upcoming cameo. Turns out Blair permits her nemesis to return to the scene of her last crime (i.e., Manhattan) just long enough for her to interview for a job with Gunn at Parsons. Without giving too much away, Raccoon Eyes inadvertently gets caught up in Chuck and Blair’s latest drama, and the whole mess comes to a head at (natch) a big fancy party. READ FULL STORY »

jamie-foxxImage Credit: Glenn Harris/PR PhotosFox announced today that it ordered the Jamie Fox Project (working title), a half-hour sketch comedy series from Executive Producer Jamie Foxx that’ll debut in prime time sometime during the 2010-11 season. Affion Crockett (The Boondocks) will star in and also serve as a producer in the comedy, which the network says will offer a “fresh take on pop culture, including spoofs of movie trailers, commercials, TV shows, and music videos.” The yet-to-be-named cast will include up-and-coming comedians.

Fox also promises that some of the “biggest names in Hollywood” will stop by and participate in the show.

“Jamie Foxx’s brilliance first shined on Fox, so it’s fantastic to welcome him back to the network,” said Kevin Reilly, Fox’s entertainment president, in a statement. “Jamie is an undeniable comedy powerhouse both as a performer and a producer, and teamed with the outrageous next-generation comedy of Affion Crockett, we look forward to the next wave of sketch comedy on Fox.”

Foxx was a co-star in Fox’s In Living Color from 1991-1994.
