Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Glee,' 'Grey's,' 'NCIS,' 'Smallville,' 'House,' and more!

ask-ausielloImage Credit: Andrew Macpherson/Fox; Giovanni Rufino/The CW; Adam Rose/Fox; Michael Courtney/The CW Got a scoop request? An anonymous tip you’re dying to share? Just want to say hi? You can send any/all of the above to ausielloscoop@ew.com

Question: Okay, so in order for me to make it till Thursday, I need some Grey’s Anatomy scoop—specifically on Mer-Der. —Olivia
Ausiello:
By the time Meredith tells Derek about her pregnancy and subsequent miscarriage in next week’s episode, she will have kept both secrets for a grand total of three months. Why wait so long? “The man was shot, and he’s already feeling [responsible] for getting a bunch of people killed,” explains series creator Shonda Rhimes. “So for her to tell him that the shooting also caused her miscarriage seems a little bit cruel. He doesn’t need one more thing to worry about.” Makes sense to me!

Question: I’d love a little Grey’s Anatomy scoopbit. —Christine
Ausiello:
Yet another Buffy grad is checking into Seattle Grace. Amber Benson (ex-Tara) will guest-star in this season’s seventh episode as the estranged daughter of one of Cristina’s patients.

Question: Any scoop on Ziva’s story line on NCIS? —Jennifer
Ausiello:
During November sweeps, Ziva “comes face-to-face with her father for the first time since her return from Israel,” reveals exec producer Shane Brennan. “It’s an emotion-charged reunion in a two-part episode that also reveals much about the enigmatic Eli David and one of the other team members.” READ FULL STORY »

Exclusive: Patrick Swayze's widow on Jennifer Grey's 'Dancing with the Stars' breakdown

Categories: Reality TV

lisa-niemiImage Credit: Adam Larkey/ABC; Ida Mae Astute/Getty ImagesLisa Niemi, the wife of the late Patrick Swayze, told EW.com exclusively that she was “caught off-guard” by the outpouring of emotion displayed by Jennifer Grey during the Dancing with the Stars premiere on Monday and “didn’t expect there to be so much focus on Patrick.” The season 11 opener featured a video segment of Grey bursting into tears when she and partner Derek Hough began to rehearse to “These Arms of Mine,” a song featured on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack.

“A friend asked me if I thought Jennifer was being sincere, and I said absolutely. I thought she was sincere,” said Niemi. “There’s got to be some part of her that knows it will help her chances a little bit. But does that cancel out whether she really does care? No, it doesn’t. I think her feelings are very true and at the same time, I think she’s going to win!”

Despite the breakdown, Grey, 50, and Hough went on to earn the highest score of the night – 24 out of 30 — by performing the Viennese waltz. It even brought judge Carrie Ann Inaba to tears. “Of course, Jennifer is hugely associated with Dirty Dancing, and if you think about it — her dancing ballroom again — how could it not remind her of moment in time that was very important?” says Niemi. “Jennifer is a very talented and very sensitive individual. It didn’t surprise me that she got so emotional.”

Niemi said she sent along her good wishes via email to Grey before she began Dancing with the Stars. She and Swayze often ran into Grey over the years and always had “warm feelings” for her. Says Niemi, “Jennifer is a very unique individual and she looks like dynamite. I’m sure some people thought Jennifer had all this dance training, which she hasn’t, but she has a lot of natural abilities. Coupled with her acting abilities, she’s a unique personality. She has a lot to bring to the show.”

“There is a lot of good will out there for Dirty Dancing,” Niemi continued. “Will that little magic help her? I think it may because she was such a big part of Dirty Dancing. Go girl and win it if you are going to do this kind of thing, I think!”

After co-authoring Time of My Life with Swayze, Niemi is working on a new book in which she’ll address how she coped with Swayze’s illness in his final years and his tragic passing last year.

'American Idol' announcement: On the scene with Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson, and Jennifer Lopez's sparkly jumpsuit

american-idol-judgesImage Credit: Michael Becker/Fox“This is certainly under the radar,” Ryan Seacrest quipped as he announced in front of thousands of screaming wanna-be singers at the Los Angeles auditions today that Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler will join Randy Jackson on the American Idol panel. Fox treated the unveiling at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. as if it wasn’t the worst-kept secret in Hollywood; Lopez, in particular, was unveiled like a veritable demi-God by appearing on a raised platform amid a cloud of smoke. Truly, the only surprising news to come out of today’s announcement was that Jackson will be the new “anchor of the panel.” (Okay, J. Lo’s sparkly jumpsuit was kinda surprising, too.)

The new judges seemed as happy as if they just won the lottery. Joined on a dais with executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick, along with Seacrest, Jackson, Fox reality exec Mike Darnell and record executive Jimmy Iovine, Tyler and Lopez admitted to being longtime fans of the 10-year-old talent show. “I always loved watching the outcome on Idol, the kids crying and screaming,” said the Aerosmith frontman. “It resonates with my career and where it now.”

“I’m a huge fan,” added Lopez. “I kind of raised my eyebrows [when I was first approached about the gig], but my career has always been the type that changes and evolves.”

In addition to joining the show, Lopez was also rewarded a first-look deal with Fox Films and Fox Broadcasting Co. The singer-actress brushed off reports that her “diva demands” caused delays in the finalization of her Idol deal. “I’m kind of used to the [negative press],” Lopez said. “After as many years as I’ve been doing this, I’m used to it. I was calming the Fox people down, telling them ‘It will be gone tomorrow. It’s going to be fine! We know what the truth!’ I was looking forward to getting started.” READ FULL STORY »

Fall 2010 ratings: 'Glee' wins big, 'The Biggest Loser' attracts smaller audience

Categories: Television, TV Ratings

glee-season-2Image Credit: Adam Rose/FoxSo much for a sophomore slump: Glee was a hit with teens and adults on Tuesday, which, together with the debuts of Raising Hope and Running Wilde, helped Fox to win the night in the key demographics. The dramedy scored its second-highest rated telecast ever among adults 18-49 (5.5 rating/16 share) and its highest-rate telecast ever among adults 18-34 (6.4/20). The episode attracted 12.2 million viewers.

The debut of Hope, which averaged 3.1/8 in the key demo, was up 24 percent from the first half hour of last season’s hour-long So You Think You Can Dance premiere and averaged 7.45 million viewers. It was Fox’s highest-rated new half-hour comedy premiere in three years (since the sorely missed Back to You on Sept. 19, 2007). Wilde, meanwhile, averaged 2.5/7 among adults 18-49 and averaged 5.86 million viewers.

CBS won the night in viewers (16.06 million), thanks to the return of NCIS (18.9 million) and a two-hour NCIS:LA (14.6 million). On ABC, the results show of Dancing with the Stars at 9 p.m. won its time slot in viewers (18.2 million), but the behemoth audience who tuned into see David Hasselhoff go bye-bye didn’t stick around for the premiere of Detroit 1-8-7: The drama dropped to 9.7 million but the drama still came in second place at 10 p.m.

And it was a tough night for NBC. The return of The Biggest Loser was down 24 percent among adults 18-49 (2.9/8) versus last season and had its lowest-rated premiere ever in the demo. It averaged 7.1 million viewers. Parenthood at 10 averaged 5.85 million. Overall, NBC only averaged 6.7 million viewers for the night and came in fourth place among adults 18-49.

'Lone Star': Already time to call it quits?

Categories: Television, TV Biz

lone-star-james-wolkImage Credit: Bill Matlock/FOXAfter a disappointing premiere for Lone Star, the vultures seem to be circling the new drama starring James Wolk as a sexy con man leading a double life. The series, which also stars Jon Voight, only averaged 4.1 million viewers on Monday and a mere 1.3 rating/3 share among adults 18-49. Naturally, the assumption is that Fox will consider axing the show sooner rather than later.

For now, however, the network has yet to make a decision, though one insider told EW that Lone Star is still scheduled to return next Monday with a new episode. Complicating matters is that Fox won’t know until two weeks from Monday how popular the show was with DVR users. Given how competitive the first night was for the 2010-11 TV season, there’s a good chance that many viewers recorded Lone Star so they could watch the ultra-addictive Dancing with the Stars or the CBS comedies live instead. On top of that, viewers are still in the sampling stage; its too early for anyone to commit to new shows. Fox recognizes that viewers need time to find Lone Star, which has the added benefit of being popular with the TV critics. Stay tuned.

'Chuck' preview: Is that a wedding ring I see?

Categories: Chuck, Scoop

chuckImage Credit: Greg Gayne/NBCOkay, so Chuck‘s season 4 premiere didn’t break any ratings records last night. I’m disappointed, but I’m choosing to look on the bright side: The opener attracted a bigger audience than the season 3 finale—and it did so with virtually zero advance promotion. Yep, someone’s drinking from the glass that’s half full today. Anyhoo, for those of you who bailed on Monday’s episode, you not only missed one of the show’s most suspenseful, hilarious, and all-around super-fun episodes ever, you robbed yourself of a spoiltacular sneak peek at the rest of the season. HBO picks up 'Boardwalk Empire' for a second season

Categories: Cable, Deals, Television, TV Biz

boardwalk-empireImage Credit: Abbot Genser/HBOOnly two days after the drama’s debut, HBO announced that it has renewed Boardwalk Empire. The series’ Sept. 19 start averaged 4.8 million viewers – HBO’s largest premiere of any program in more than six years (since the March 21, 2004 introduction of Deadwood).

“All the ingredients aligned for this one, from Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson’s initial pitch, to Martin Scorsese’s enormous contributions as director and executive producer, to the genius of Terry Winter and the expertise of Tim Van Patten, to a stellar cast led by Steve Buscemi,” said Michael Lombardo, President of HBO Programming, in a statement.  “The response from the media and our viewers has been nothing short of amazing.”

Empire is set in Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol became illegal throughout the United States.
