'Fringe' Scoop: Five season 3 spoilers!

Categories: Fringe, Scoop

I’ve got some news for Regular-World and Alternate-World Fringe fans alike. On a conference call today, showrunners Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman revealed new info on the eagerly awaited upcoming third season of the universe-skipping sci-fi series, which premieres on Sept. 23. So grab a Walter-approved snack—preferably a Ho Ho—and read on.

1. The bell may have not yet tolled for Bell. Although Walter’s former lab partner William Bell may have died in the season finale, the exec producers were quick to point out that nothing is final in the world of Fringe. “Leonard Nimoy has retired from acting,” says Pinkner. “But if Leonard chooses to come back, there is a story in place that we’d love to tell.” Adds Wyman: “I think it’s fair to say that you have not experienced the last of William Bell.” READ FULL STORY »

'The Apprentice' logs its lowest-rated telecast ever

Categories: Reality TV, TV Ratings

This won’t go over well with The Donald: Despite airing against repeats on CBS, ABC, and Fox, the return of The Apprentice on Thursday logged its lowest-rated telecast ever among adults 18-49 (1.5 rating/5 share) and only averaged 4.7 million viewers, according to fast national results from Nielsen. The show dropped 53 percent from its Celebrity edition last spring in the key demographic and 63 percent from its last non-celebrity premiere on Jan. 1, 2007. It was also down 29 percent from its previous all-time franchise low in the fall 2005.

Last night’s premiere was also down 44 percent from the Thursday debut of The Jay Leno Show on Sept. 17, 2009.

NBC attempted to take the glass half-full approach when looking at the reality show’s performance. It did rank No. 2 in the time slot among men 18-34, 18-49  and 25-54 and grew 14 percent from its first half-hour to its fourth among adults 18-49. It also was the No. 2 ranked show among adults 18-34 and women 18-34 in the second hour.

Overall, CBS won the night in viewers (7.94 million), followed by ABC (5.75 million), NBC (4.28 million), and Fox (2.44 million). On the CW, meanwhile, the second week of Nikita built on its lead-in from The Vampire Diaries in viewers (3.35 million versus 3.04 million).

'Memphis Beat' picked up for second season on TNT

Categories: Cable, Deals, TV Biz

TNT has picked up a second season of Memphis Beat, its new drama starring Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl) and Alfre Woodard (Three Rivers).  The cable network ordered an additional 10 episodes that will air in 2011.

The drama premiered June 22 and averaged 4.7 million viewers. It wrapped its first season as one of ad-supported cable’s Top 5 new series of the summer and the No. 1 Tuesday series among adults 25-54. Lee plays Dwight Hendricks, a quirky police detective in Memphis. Woodard plays his boss Lt. Tanya Rice.

Memphis Beat is a real treasure - a slightly off-center crime drama with great actors, memorable characters and a soundtrack steeped in Memphis sounds,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president and head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies, in a statement.  “We look forward to another fantastic season next year.”

Memphis Beat is TNT’s fifth summer series to be renewed this year.  TNT previously announced renewals for The Closer, Rizzoli & Isles, Leverage and HawthoRNe.

First Look: The 'Hawaii Five-0' music video

Categories: Hawaii Five-O, Scoop

I’m not sure why, but I can’t get enough of CBS’ super-fun new music video for Hawaii Five-O. Maybe it’s the panoramic shots of Hawaii. Maybe it’s the footage from the awesome pilot. Or maybe it’s the fact that said video features the greatest college marching band in history. Regardless, an exclusive first look at the spirited clip—which boasts cameos by Five-O costars Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park—is after the jump!

[Full disclosure: Michael Ausiello is a graduate of the University of Southern California and a former member of the USC Marching Band.]

Fall 2010 ratings: 'America's Got Talent' triumphs, 'Big Brother' gains viewers from last season

Categories: Reality TV, TV Ratings

Wednesday featured a few goodbyes (so long, Masterchef and Big Brother 12) and a couple of hellos (welcome to your new night, Survivor!) but it was the finale of America’s Got Talent that helped NBC win the night among total viewers. NBC averaged 14.3 million, besting CBS at 9.26 million. But both networks ended up tying for first place among the important adults 18-49 demographic, according to fast national results from Nielsen.

Let’s start with NBC. America’s Got Talent owned the 8-10 p.m. timeslot in viewers, but didn’t start to show strength across the key demographics until it came time to declare the winner during the second hour. The finale was up 32 percent versus last week’s performance among adults 18-49 and up 6 percent versus last year’s finale on Sept. 16. Unfortunately, the strength of the annual talent show didn’t do much for the debut of the Jimmy Smits starrer Outlaw: The drama only averaged a 2.4/7 among adults 18-49 and was down 31 percent from the Thursday premiere of The Jay Leno Show last Sept. 16. Ouch. Still, it was up 4 percent from last season’s Mercy debut and 9 percent from last season’s Trauma debut — and, at 10.85 million, it won its time slot in viewers, so the news wasn’t all that bad for NBC’s new drama.

On CBS, the return of Survivor (with Jimmy Johnson!) was up 8 percent from the Samoa premiere on Sept. 17, 2009 in adults 18-49 but down 13 percent from the Heroes vs. Villains debut on Feb. 11. It averaged 11.95 million and came in second to the first hour of Talent. The Big Brother finale was up 7 percent from last week in adults and up 4 percent from last year’s finale on Sept. 15. It averaged 7.88 million viewers.

On Fox, Masterchef wrapped the summer as the No. 1 new series among adults 18-49. The two-hour finale averaged 4.73 million viewers. ABC ran comedy repeats.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Fringe,' 'Dexter,' 'Private Practice,' 'House,' 'Glee,' and more!

ask-ausielloImage Credit: Michael Lavine/Fox; Adam Taylor/ABC; Cliff Lipson/Showtime; Miranda Penn Turin/FoxGot a scoop request? An anonymous tip you’re dying to share? Just want to say hi? You can send any/all of the above to ausielloscoop@ew.com.

Question: I know you are busy and all with getting your fall season tactics together, but can you please give me some Private Practice scoop? —Vernice
Ausiello:
Fall season tactics? You tickle me, Vernice. Let’s grab a drink sometime. Here’s your Private spoiler: Something tragic will happen to a major character during November sweeps. It’s probably the darkest story PP has ever tackled—and this show has tackled some dark stories. Consider yourself warned.

Question: Seriously, no Fringe scoop last week? Why do I even bother to read this column? —Brett
Ausiello:
That’s between you, your therapist, and the lovely people at CVS. If it’s any consolation, I have Fringe scoop this week. Actually, I’ve got a few Fringe scoops. The first one comes courtesy of John Noble, who reveals exactly how Walternate plans to pull Peter’s strings from the alt-universe. “[Walternate] has to ensure that [Peter] continues to work on our side,” says Noble, “and he’ll do that through alt-Olivia.” Okay, I’ll bite: How exactly will Bolivia manipulate Peter? Noble hesitates before whispering, “She seduces him… Did I just say that? Did I just drop a big teaser?” I believe you did, sir!

Question: Does the fact that Fringe is setting every other episode “over there” mean that we’re going to see more of Charlie this season? —Melissa
Ausiello:
That’s precisely what that means. Charlie remains active in the alt-world’s Fringe division, so look for him to appear in multiple episodes—beginning with next Thursday’s season premiere.

Question: Can I get some good Grey’s Anatomy news regarding Der and Mer? —Betsy
Ausiello:
Among the manifestations of Derek’s post-bloodbath adrenaline junkie phase will be an increased sexual appetite. “[There's] a lot of sex,” says series creator Shonda Rhimes. “He’s on the high that a person gets when they face death and survive it.” READ FULL STORY »

Paramount to take Spike TV's 'Deadliest Warrior' to the big screen

Categories: Deals, Movie Biz, Movies

Paramount Pictures and Shawn Levy’s (Night at the Museum) 21 Laps are partnering to turn Spike TV’s hit television show Deadliest Warrior, which just concluded its second season, into a feature film. The plot line for the movie remains under wraps, but the television show pits history’s greatest warriors against one another to determine who is the most powerful. Through a combination of CG technology, real-life fighters, historians, and weapons experts, the producers of the show were able to determine which warriors throughout history would have been the deadliest. Spike TV just renewed the series for its third season.

Levy and 21 Laps production president Dan Levine will produce with Levy contemplating directing the movie. Levy is currently shooting Real Steal with Hugh Jackman. The project marks the first collaboration between Paramount Pictures and its sister company Spike TV.
