Stephen Lang joins Fox's 'Terra Nova'

Categories: Casting, Deals, TV Biz

stephen-langImage Credit: Mark Von Holden/Getty ImagesUPDATED 9/17 One of Hollywood’s preeminent baddies is joining Fox’s time travel drama Terra Nova.  EW has confirmed that Stephen Lang — last seen shooting up the blue natives in Avatar — will play the merciless leader of a prehistoric settlement in the drama that’ll bow next year. The project has already lured Jason O’Mara (Life on Mars) to play Jim Shannon, whose family is part of a group of settlers who travel back in time.

This summer, Fox announced that it’ll preview Terra Nova for one night in May 2011, but then will bow the drama officially in the fall of 2011. Fox decided to give the drama the same treatment it gave Glee, which was previewed last year after a May episode of American Idol and subsequently rolled out officially in the fall of 2009. The experiment worked: Buzz for the musical dramedy built over the summer and the show had an auspicious beginning.

Production on Terra Nova, which has yet to complete the casting process, isn’t expected to begin until October in Australia.

'Rizzoli & Isles' and 'The Closer' wrap up record seasons on TNT

Categories: Television, TV Ratings

TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles wrapped up its first season on Monday as the No. 1 ad-supported cable show of all time among viewers. The first season averaged 8.7 million viewers – a first for an ad-supported cable show. But the Angie Harmon starrer wasn’t the only series to post records for TNT: The Closer also finished its most-watched season ever on Monday with 8.4 million viewers. It now ranks as the No. 2 most-watched series of all time among viewers on ad-supported cable.

Last night’s finale of Rizzoli averaged 6.6 million while Closer lured 7.2 million. “TNT’s The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles have made this a summer to remember, from their record-breaking ratings to Kyra Sedgwick’s big night at the Emmys,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president and head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), in a statement.  “The Closer proved that a series in its sixth season can continue to reach entirely new creative levels while also building in audience.  Rizzoli & Isles brought two exciting new personalities to television and quickly established itself as a hit in its own right.  We are extremely proud of both series and the tremendous success they have enjoyed.”

Rizzoli’s July 12 premiere holds the record as cable’s most successful series launch of all time, with more than 9 million viewers, according to TNT.  The Aug. 9 episode currently ranks as ad-supported cable’s top scripted series telecast for the year-to-date, with 9.3 million viewers.

'90210' and 'Gossip Girl' return with decent ratings on CW

Categories: Reality TV, TV Ratings

The CW premiered new seasons of 90210 and Gossip Girl on Monday and earned some decent numbers for the fifth network. For 90210, it was the network’s best performance among adults 18-34 (1.2 rating/4 share) and total viewers (2 million) since December 2009. The show aired on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. last season. 90210′s ratings were up over its final episodes in May by 21% among women 18-34 and 31% in total viewers.

Gossip Girl built on its 90210 lead-in by 18% in women 18-34 and 18% among females 12 to 34 yet the episode only averaged 1.85 million viewers. The season opener was virtually flat with the drama’s season ending in May.

Originals on the CW aired against reruns of comedies on CBS and the finales of Bachelor Pad and Dating in the Dark on ABC. Pad was down 10% from last week among adults 18-49 and was the series’  lowest rated telecast ever, but the two-hour finale won its timeslot in viewers (5.80 million). Dating was up 8% in the 18-49 demo versus last week and averaged 3.50 million.

NBC aired a repeat of America’s Got Talent.
