Fall 2010 ratings: Football on NBC trounces the competition; CW premieres take a hit

Categories: Television, TV Ratings

ratingsImage Credit: Bob Mahoney/The CW; Ben Mark Holzberg/The CWA rematch of last season’s NFC Championship between the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints on NBC blew the competition out of the water Thursday, stealing a lot of The CW’s thunder and its much-anticipated debut of Nikita. Even the return of cult fave The Vampire Diaries took a hit: The young girls clearly preferred the sight of the Vikings’ Brett Favre than a pair of handsome bloodsuckers because the football game even dominated in the young female demographics, not to mention the many other viewers across the spectrum. (Women 25-54? Teens? Infants? No problem!) It’s no surprise, then, that NBC won the night in viewers (22.9 million) and all the key demographics.

Still, Nikita’s premiere didn’t look too shabby. The sight of star Maggie Q in a tiny red bathing suit attracted an average 3.56 million viewers and actually built on the lead-in from Diaries, which averaged 3.34 million. Nikita also matched the all-time high for The CW in the Thursday 9-10 p.m. time period for original programming among women 18-34 (1.9/5). Diaries, in comparison, retained about 87% of its adults 18-34 from a year ago and about 90% of its women 18-34.

Meanwhile, part one of the of the three-night, Big Brother finale was up 9% versus last week in the adults 18-49 demographic. It averaged 7.71 million viewers. Go, Lane!

'Heroes' cancellation: Source says NBC not moving forward with movie that will wrap up series

Categories: Heroes, Sci-Fi, Television, TV Biz

tim-kringImage Credit: Frank Ockenfels/NBCDon’t hold out for closure, Heroes fans: A key source on the canceled drama told EW that NBC is not moving forward with a movie that would wrap up the four-year series. After the Peacock announced the show’s cancellation last May, there was some talk about allowing creator Tim Kring to give fans one more chance to say goodbye to their favorite characters, but that’s as far as it went.

NBC would not comment Thursday.

In June, Kring didn’t sound particularly hopeful about a Heroes sendoff on NBC when he talked to EW about his next project – creating interactive content for Nokia. “No decision has been made,” he said. “But the Heroes brand is an extremely broad premise. It was a premise about ordinary people, an undisclosed number of people all over the world, who were waking up to these extraordinary abilities. Any number of stories could happen around that. We never posited a single ending or a single premise.  It wasn’t about getting off of an island or stopping something from happening. We told stories in volumes that had a beginning, a middle, and an end. Those volumes could go on and on and on with many different characters. As a result, that Heroes universe is something that can be tapped into again in many ways.”  Translation: Any kind of follow-up could happen on the web! Or maybe in print! Just not on NBC during the 2010-11 season, it seems.

Kring’s relationship didn’t end after Heroes: He sold a script to the peacock called III for the 2010-11 season but it never moved past the development stage. It was about a third world war involving the invasion of the United States.

Tim Allen: Back on TV in Fall 2011?

tim-allenImage Credit: FilmMagic Inc/FilmMagic.comThe fall season doesn’t officially begin until Sept. 20, but the broadcast networks have already kicked off development for the following September. A number of hot projects have hit the marketplace — a crime thriller and an Alcatraz drama from uber-producer J.J. Abrams, just to name two — but those scripts don’t seem nearly as provocative as the possibility of a (major?) comeback by a former ABC star. EW has learned from multiple sources that Tim Allen (Home Improvement) is looking to stage a return to prime time — as long as it involves the right project. “It will be huge,” predicts one manager of Allen’s comeback — if and when it happens. Another source indicated that the actor is taking “a few select meetings” with writer-producers, one of whom may include Greg Daniels (Parks & Recreation, The Office). Is there a chance that Allen could even join the staff of Dunder-Mifflin? READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe' First Look: The season 3 cast photo!

fringeImage Credit: Andrew Macpherson/FoxAre you noticing a pattern here? It’s Thursday and I’ve got another Fringe first look! Here’s the first official group photo for the Fox thriller’s third season, which premieres on Sept. 23. I can’t decide what I find most intriguing about this image: the shadowy figure “observing” the cast (presumably from Overthereland), or the touch of sass Astrid appears to be throwing out. Thoughts? Opinions? Theories? Share ‘em below!

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'House,' 'Glee,' 'Bones,' 'Supernatural,' 'HIMYM,' and more!

Question: Have you seen the House premiere? If so, thoughts? —Robin
Ausiello:
Yes, I’ve seen it—it’s the reason this column arrived a little late. If you’re a Huddy fan, you’re going to swoon yourself silly. The Sept. 20 opener features the star-crossed lovers cuddling, bathing, massaging, champagne-toasting, and—of course—kissing. I think I counted a dozen smooches in the first 15 minutes alone. The episode will also answer the burning question “What does Hugh Laurie look like wearing nothing but a laptop?”

Question: Should we read anything into the fact that Chase is touching Thirteen’s shoulder in House‘s season 7 key art? —Nina
Ausiello:
After watching the premiere, I would have to say HELL YES, YOU SHOULD.

Question: How does House’s team—specifically Chase, Taub, and Foreman—react to House and Cuddy being an item? —Brandon
Ausiello:
To quote Dr. Crankenstein in episode 2, one is “in favor,” another is “indignant,” and a third is “indifferent.” Now head to the comments and match the adjective with the character! But first, repeat after me: “Games are fun.” READ FULL STORY »

Fall 2010 ratings: 'Hellcats' and 'America's Next Top Model' debut to mixed results

CW unveiled a new season of America’s Next Top Model and its fresh drama Hellcats on Wednesday, but to mixed results: The reality show was down 13% among adults 18-49 versus last year’s premiere and was the show’s lowest-rated season opener ever. It averaged nearly 2.9 million viewers during the 8 p.m. time slot, which was dominated by CBS’ Big Brother among viewers and adults 18-49.

As for Hellcats, which averaged nearly 3 million viewers, the cheerleading show won its time slot among female teens and was up 100% from the Beautiful Life premiere on 9/16/2009 among adults 18-49. But it was down 8% from last fall’s Melrose Place rollout and down 43% from The Vampire Diaries debut in the same demo. Still, this show is marketed for young viewers so CW should be cautiously optimistic about the drama’s start.

Overall, Fox won the night among adults 18-49, thanks to another strong performance by Masterchef while NBC, buoyed by the final episodes of America’s Got Talent, won the night in viewers (8.36 million).

'Sons of Anarchy' premiere was the series' third-most watched episode ever

The third season premiere of Sons of Anarchy on Tuesday attracted 4.13 million viewers, making it the third most-watched episode of the drama, just behind the season 2 premiere and the season 2 finale. Universal to produce three films and TV series based on Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower'

Categories: Movie Biz, Movies, TV Biz

Stephen-KingImage Credit: Lee Roth/RothStock/PR PhotosUniversal announced today that it has acquired the rights to produce three films and an NBC series based on the seven novels, short stories and comic books from Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. Ron Howard will direct the first film and the first season of the TV show, which will be written by Akiva Goldsman (The Da Vinci Code).

“I’ve been waiting for the right team to bring the characters and stories in these books to film and TV viewers around the world,” said King, in a statement. “Ron, Akiva, Brian along with Universal and NBC have a deep interest and passion for the The Dark Tower series and I know that will translate into an intriguing series of films and TV shows that respect the origins and the characters in The Dark Tower that fans have come to love.”

More than 30 million copies of The Dark Tower have been sold in 40 countries. After the series of seven books was completed, a prequel of comic books based on one of the characters was also published.

“The worlds of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series are richly detailed, inter-locking and deeply connected,” said Goldsman in a statement.  “By telling this story across media platforms and over multiple hours—and with a view to telling it completely—we have our best chance of translating Roland’s quest to reach The Dark Tower onto screen.  We are proceeding with tremendous excitement, fidelity to the source material and, quite frankly, no small amount of awe at this opportunity.”

King is also a columnist for Entertainment Weekly.
