Katie Couric 'hasn't made any decision' about her next move, says source

katie-couricImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosThough rumors persist that CBS Evening News Anchor Katie Couric may return to NBC’s Today, a key source tells EW that it’s premature to predict what she may (or may not) do once her deal with CBS expires in May. “Kate is enjoying her success with her team at CBS News, and hasn’t made any decision,” says the source.

Speculation about Couric’s next move hit a fever pitch this week when her friend and former Today boss Jeff Zucker announced his intention to leave NBC-Universal once the takeover┬áby Comcast is complete. While many speculated that Zucker’s departure would deter Couric from returning to the morning show, that is not the case, the insider stressed. A return to Today remains a possibility, though it’s too early to predict what newly-minted CEO Steve Burke will do, should Couric become available.

For now, Couric remains focused on CBS News, which this week earned seven News & Documentary Emmys — more than any other network. Couric won the prize for outstanding interview for her 60 Minutes chat with Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and the crew of U.S. Airways flight 1549, while her show nabbed Emmys for investigative journalism (“Rape in America: Justice Denied”), business and economic reporting (“Financial Family Tree”) and for best story in a regularly scheduled newscast (“The Battle of Wanat”).

Despite the flurry of honors (Couric has also won two Edward R. Murrow awards), CBS Evening News remains stuck in third place. For the 2009-10 season that ended Sept. 19, the broadcast averaged 5.7 million viewers — a 6% drop versus the previous year. The No. 1 ranked NBC (8.5 million) and the No. 2 ranked ABC (7.5 million) were also down 1% and 4%, respectively. Among adults 25-54 — the target audience for news — CBS (a 1.4 rating), also trailed NBC (2.1) and ABC (1.7). Each 25-54 ratings point represents 1.24 million viewers.

Anderson Cooper would be a great replacement for her.

For starters, 5.7 million viewers a night, even compared to ABC’s World News Tonight and NBC’s Nightly News (which draw higher ratings) is STILL good considering that there are 4 or 5 24 hour news networks, the internet, google, twitter, and countless other sources to get information and news. CBS should be happy that the ratings for her show are stable and are not continuing to slide, and make an effort to keep her. Also, going back to Today is unfair to Meredith who has been doing a good job there. Where would she go? Finally, I hope the new regime at NBC really works on getting that network back on track to it’s glory days. Without the 3 hours of The Today Show and the Tonight Show, they really would be in even worse shape…

    Maybe she should go away

  • Benoreno

I would be very disappointed if Meredith Viera was replaced by Katie. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

    • FunnyMan

Are you kidding?!? It IS broke. Meredith Viera is awful!!! She is a horrible interviewer and just does not seem to click with the rest of the team.

      • Benoreno

I like Meredith. So, I don’t think it’s broke. My opinion.

      • MrsK

I agree with FunnyMan. I never really have liked Meredith Viera. She was much better on “The View”. Just has never clicked with me. She is definitely NO Katie Couric.

    • Melissa

I agree. Just look at the body language of her Today Show co-workers before and after she left the show. She must be a HUGE diva! Because when she was on the show it was terribly tense. When she went on vacation Matt, Al and Anne were much more relaxed. The worst thing NBC could do is bring her back.

      • scottyb

I agree Melissa, Matt, Al and Ann did not seem like they were having fun with their job while Katie was there. Meredith Viera brought fun to the Today Show and her Matt work so well together. Katie needs to go away.

I love both Meredith and Katie – but would Couric really want to go back to Today? I wouldn’t. I’d want a different challenge. She’s a great talent – I’m sure there are lots of offers for her to pick something great from.

  • KSG

Why would they want her back? Didn’t ratings for The Today Show go up after she was replaced with Meredith?

    • tori

Exactly. I hope she doesn’t come back. I love Meredith. She’s a great interviewer and she and Matt have such a brother/sister relationship. When they get to the more light-hearted segments, they are hilarious together.

I just don’t like her…and one reason why she’s in third place is people percieve bias in her network’s reporting.

I’m not convinced that NBC and ABC are any better when it comes to being biased aganst conservatives.

ABC, who I watched for years, has gone far downhill after the death of Peter Jennings.

    • Dalla

Anyone with half a brain would and should be biased against conservatives. They are part of the evil going on in this country.

    • Natalie

Well thank goodness you have Fox News then, John…fair and unbiased, right? Please!

    • erin

Conservatives think anyone who talks about reality is “biased” because they don’t exist in the same alternate universe they do – where Obama is a Muslim socialist born in Kenya and brown-skinned people are be-heading white people in the desert on a daily basis.

  • TorontoTom

I will watch Katie wherever she goes. I was hoping she’d take over for Larry King. She’s one of my favorite people on TV. Love her!

    • Nancy

Um, hello – they already announced who’s taking over for King. Let’s all just pray she goes far away and is never heard from again.

      • Tee

He said WAS hoping, not IS hoping.

  • Jed

She is an ego-maniac who got way overpaid by Moonvees and still can’t get that newscast out of thrid place. let’s just hope and pray he doesn’t replace her with his wife ChenBot or they will be toast! Just let her go to CNN.

  • Tweety Cat

Did the Today not learn anything from the Jane Pauley – Deborah Norville debacle? Their ratings will plummet if Katie pushes Meredith out.

  • Ian

I much preferred Dan Rather and Bob Schieffer to Couric – she has talent, but I don’t like her interview style or the editorial stamp she’s put on the show. For big news, I would not think of her first as my primary source of information. Diane Sawyer, Paula Zahn, Christiane Amanpour… I much prefer these women as anchors.

  • Gwen

I’ve been watching CBS News since the days of Walter Cronkite. I think Katie is doing a fine job, but she’s not the only reason I watch CBS: there are a number of very fine correspondents, headed by Bob Schieffer and Jeff Greenfield. I think of it as a team effort, with Katie leading off.

  • hambone

I love Katie, she’s a good journalist!!! Meredith is absolutely the worst and should stick to Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

  • SH

Have always read KC is nothing but a prima donna with a very high opinion of herself. Maybe there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not my style. Love Meredith, really loved Jane Pauley. Deborah Norville and KC not so much…

  • emelem

She should replace Larry King. It’s really the best fit for her. She sucks at the news. She is such a celebrity whore, LOVES interviewing them, can’t get enough of them. She would be a PERFECT replacement for Larry King!

    • KD

They already found a replacement for Larry King. The British judge in America’s Got Talent– Pierce.

      • Stormy

  • Butters

Jay vs Conan all over again?!
