'Dancing with the Stars': Eliminated contestant talks about 'competing against athletes, graceful people'

Tags: , News

After hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke tortured the contestants through another excruciating night of who’s safe and who’s not (better to wait and hear everything they say, Cheryl Burke!), another low-scoring performer was sent packing Tuesday on Dancing with the Stars. For more about the celebrity who got the heave-ho, go to the jump.Margaret-Cho-Dancing_320.jpg Image Credit: Bob D'Amico/ABC Margaret Cho may have been responsible for some of the best soundbites this season (she called her samba on Monday “the gayest thing that ever happened”), but it looks like viewers weren’t too interested in her impromptu yuks. After she and Louis Van Amstel scored 18 out of a possible 30 for dancing to Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana” on Monday, the comedienne became the third contestant to leave the ABC reality show.

“I’m just so sad we aren’t going to be dancing,” Cho told EW afterwards. ”I’m going to dance with Louis anyway. I love being out on the floor with him and I’m going to miss that. I was also crying because this has been such a joyful experience.”

Cho’s samba on Monday suffered from a lack of researsal time, something that wasn’t lost on the judges: Len Goodman said he “couldn’t quite get the story of it.” She got a dig in by retorting how it was about “having pride while people are criticizing you” while Van Amstel took the criticism in stride. ”I’m kind of used of it,” he said. “ The first two weeks, the judges are always very harsh, and they never really have a compliment. But in the end, that makes you stronger because if they are really full of compliments from the get-go, then you don’t really work hard. So it always made me work harder. I think among all the contestants, Margaret has no physical experience whatsoever.”

“I was starting from zero,” Cho added. “It was such a physical challenge. That’s what is really great because now I want to keep doing it, I want to keep dancing. It’s going to add years to my life, and that’s a really powerful thing.”

Cho says she “wouldn’t change anything” about her crazy costume choices. “I have to be myself, no matter what. I have to stand tall and proud because that’s what I’m all about.” But she always thought she was working from a disadvantage. “We are competing against athletes and very graceful people. I am so in a new arena here. My forte is stand-up comedy so dance is totally new. That’s why I was intimidated.”

At the very least, her experience on Dancing with the Stars has provided lots of fodder for future standup routines. “That’s where I get to hash it out,” she said, laughing. ”People should come check it out. I’m going to be ripping everyone a new one.”

I love her, she’s lovely and funny and confident and actually had interesting things to say, unlike so many of the other contestants. Sad she got eliminated so soon!

    • Zach

It’s so true. She was a delight to watch, and I’m sure she’d have been a fan favorite if the judges hadn’t saddled her with those scores only to overscore the next-lowest two couples, Bristol and The Situation, both of whom have crazy inexplicable fanbases that an offbeat like Margaret wasn’t going to be able to overcome without the last name of Osmond.

      • Dominic

I was delighted she outlasted the Hoff and Bolton! Will miss her performances so much – she got a 10 for entertaining in my book.

  • alan of montreal

I’ll see you in Montreal on the 23rd for your new show, Margaret! Can’t wait!

  • mike troyan

Margaret was lucky to have made it this far. What I would love to see is catt sadler on the show competing against margaret. Talk about ratings W0W

    • Zach

      are you kidding.

  • hatecho

she is not funny. it’s sad that affirmative action allowed an unfunny person to become a professional comic.

    • hateu

      FU, racist.

    • Annie R

Affirmative action only counts in education and some employment. If she wasn’t funny and no one came to her shows, she wouldn’t have a career.

    • KarlHall

Exatctly. you’re totally racist. She’s a COMEDIAN, not an administrative assistant. People find her funny – hence WE go to her shows.

    • t

What’s sad is that people like you have internet access to spread your bile. I hope you choke on it!

    • a

      Unfunny is not a word.

    • teresa

I’m pretty sure affirmative action had nothing to do with her becoming a stand up comic. I’m pretty sure that to become a stand up comic, you have to put yourself out there all on your own, take the stage by yourself. It has to be something you really want to do. She doesn’t work in an office or factory. She works on a stage. You idiot.

  • DiMi

I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time, and I am really, really sad. I won’t be watching the rest of the season. There’s really nobody interesting on the show now.

    • KarlHall

yep, that’s what I posted on the other post. No reason to watch now since everyone else is either desperately trying to seek fame (Bristol, Situation, Kyle, Audrina), boring sticks in the mud (Florence, Brandy) or the winner, Jennifer.

  • Tweety Cat

Seriously — what happened to her tattoos tonight? They were GONE!!

    • Ali K

The make up that can cover up tattoos nowadays is amazing. I used to have a coworker who had large bold tattoos all along her forearms, but you never would know unless you saw her washing off the make up after her shift. DWTS obviously has artists who know what they’re doing.

    • dwts fan

I was checking out that too. She had a nude colored body suit that covered up her tats, not makeup. I wonder why she decided to do that? Last week her costume covered them up too.

    • ChoYesBristolNo

She looked better with the tats covered up. They’re butt ugly.

    • Marci

Arm sleeve tatoos on a woman are just trashy.

  • adore her and i agree with the sentiment. i wish they kind of divided DWTS into two shows — one for those with a lot of physical experience (singers, dancers, athletes) and one for those who are starting from scratch (comedians, journalists, etc.).

    • deegeezee

…and one for those with no skills, whatsoever (Bristol, Situation).

      • pcPolice

deegeezee. Nice way to show both your political agenda and your ethnic insensitivity all in one sentence. Where’s all that tolerance I hear so much about?

      • GS

It has nothing to do with politics or ethnicity. They are not good dancers period. Way to show your colors, genius.

      • Moli

Where do you see anything political? deegeezee says and I quote(copy/paste) ‘…and one for those with no skills, whatsoever (Bristol, Situation)’. Are you implying that Bristol and The Situation are involved in politics? If so and you share with the rest of America where you have obtained your facts? I and eveyone BUT you gathered the poster simply meant Bristol nor the Situation have dancing skills(or any other that we know of)

    • Callie

Wasn’t the original idea behind the show to take non-dancers – “stars” – pair them with pro-dancers, and see what comes out of it, judge it, and come up with a winner? If that’s the truth of the matter, then why hate on non-dancers like Bristol and The Situation?

  • JoAnne Cramberg

I agree that the results show is TORTURE. I only watch the actual results, but last night I did break in for Michael Bolton’s classy performance. He is best behind a microphone. Why can’t some TV genius come up with a better was to announce results–one that is painless?

    • Lisa Simpson

The threat of Michael Bolton singing was the reason I skipped last night’s results show.

    • Tear

Tha’ts why I generally DVR it to watch later that evening

  • shirley

She was in the bottom so i new she
would lose she can’t dance i hate to
say it but it’s true and Jennifer Grey is a ringer they have already
pick her to win talking about the
voter do the pick if that true how
Mia Bee lost to that Donny.O with
    the two left feet.

    • D’s Advocate

Didn’t realize the poetry slam was scheduled to start now :)

  • mostboringseasonever

Her dancing was pretty bad. Not a big surprise that she went home.

  • Sandy

Good riddance! I cannot stand her. I don’t think she is funny and is overly emotional most of the time. Now I won’t have to suffer watching her clomp around the stage, bawl or watch her attempt to be funny. She may be a nice person, but she can’t dance and should have been sent home in Week 1.

  • Daniel

    Kick off Bristol!!!
NO WAY she can dance better than Margeret Cho.

    • daz

      I agree with you 100%!

  • Dixie

The Situation should have gone. Not that I was a fan of Cho, but I did see improvement with her versus Mike. Cho’s face was not pleasant to look at. And I think she covered her tats so they wouldn’t detract from the costume, etc. – that was a good move.

  • Tear

Thank goodness she’s gone, it’s was so painful to watch her dance. OTOH I never get her humor any way

  • Jean Guy Levesque

Cho had to go. Vive la Quebec!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
