CBS ties Fox on Tuesday for first time this season in key adult demographic

glee-ncisImage Credit: Adam Rose/Fox; Sonja Flemming/CBSFor the first Tuesday this season, CBS tied Fox in the all-important adults 18-49 demographic, thanks to another winning performance by NCIS. CBS has won all four Tuesdays of the 2010-11 season among total viewers (last night, it averaged 15.6 million), but Tuesday was the first time the Eye stood neck-and-neck with the Glee-fueled Fox. Both networks finished the night with a 3.3 rating/9 share.

The Mark Harmon starrer remains the strongest show in CBS’ Tuesday arsenal: NCIS averaged a 3.9/11 and 18.9 million viewers. Each 18-49 ratings point is worth 1.31 million viewers.

Glee finished the night as the No. 1 program among adults 18-49 (4.6 rating/13 share) and averaged 11.2 million viewers. But the sophomore show is having to do a lot of heavy lifting for Fox on Tuesdays, since the network’s new comedies aren’t generating nearly enough interest. The Martha Plimpton starrer, Raising Hope, only averaged 6.3 million viewers and posted a 2.6/7 in the demo while Running Wilde dropped to 3.5 million viewers and only a 1.5/4 in the demo. Hope’s already been picked up for the season, but the jury’s still out on the Keri Russell-Will Arnett comedy.

ABC came in second for the night in viewers (10.2 million) thanks to the Dancing With the Stars result show (Bye, Situation!).  No Ordinary Family dropped 15% in the key demo from last week to a meager 2.3/6 — its lowest-rated telecast so far this season. It averaged 7.7 million. Detroit 1-8-7 at 10 p.m. lured 7.4 million.

Fox was third for the night in viewers (8.0 million), followed by NBC (6.2 million). Speaking of which, perhaps somebody should start saying some prayers for the critically-beloved (but viewer-starved) drama Parenthood. The NBC drama at 10 p.m. only averaged 4.7 million and matched its lowest-rated telecast ever among adults 18-49 (2.0/5).

Morning Topline

Last night FOX ranked No. 1 for its fourth consecutive Tuesday this season and also won the night among Adults 18-34 and Teens.

  • · GLEE: 4.6/13, even with last week’s telecast. GLEE was the once again the No. 1 program for the night among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and Teens.
  • · RAISING HOPE: 2.6/7, up +4%
  • · RUNNING WILDE: 1.5/4, down -12% from last week

ABC

  • · No Ordinary Family:  2.3/6, down -15% and its lowest-rated telecast this Fall
  • · Dancing With the Stars-Results: 3.4/9, up +3%
  • · Detroit 1-8-7: 1.8/5. up +6%

CBS

  • · NCIS: 3.9/11, up +3%
  • · NCIS: LA:  3.5/9, up +3%
  • · The Good Wife:  2.6/7, up +4%

Seriously, NBC move Parenthood to a different night or actually put some advertising behind and support this show. It’s wonderful. I’ve told everyone I know about it. My husband and I love it and we’re in that key demographic that everyone strives for.

    • bamalam

I see so much advertising for Parenthood…unfortunately it is at 6:00 AM. I watch this show and I have 8:00 AM classes at college and this is the only time I see ads for the show. Not really the right time if the 18 years old+ demographic is the most important to capture.

    • Ncdrew

I’d love to see more viewers find Parenthood. It’s a wonderful show and the family members are really meshing. I record this and The Good Wife at 10 on Tuesdays but, more often than not, I’m opting to watch this show live. Lauren Graham is fabulous and the other stars are now matching her. The family dinner scenes sometime have the fun crazy dynamics of Modern Family (and of my family, for that matter). PLEASE, people, give this a try. You won’t be sorry.

    • sj

Parenthood is really good; not everyone is a “gleek” so i hope the show sticks around!

    • downtown diva

If NBC would move Parenthood to Thursdays at 10:00, it would probably fare better. But I think NBC is still looking to launch Love Bites at midseason on Thursdays at 10:00 so I guess that won’t happen. I was already “hooked” on watching The Good Wife by the time the current version Parenthood began to air in February… I’m currently watching season 1 of Parenthood via TV on DVD and DVRing season 2. I hope that the combo of “live” viewers and DVR viewers can help keep Parenthood alive.

  • outboundny

NBC is too stupid to do something smart like moving a good show.

  • S.O.

I know absolutely NO ONE that watches NCIS. how the hell is that the #1 show? LOL

    • Mel

Neither do I. I tried watching it myself several times and found it extremely boring.

      • Duane

The people who follow ew.com for the most part will supports shows like Parenthood, 30 rock etc which is probably considered “niche” programming. Those who favor NCIS or CBS in general have “mainstream” or general audiences I think.

    • Don

The only thing that sets NCIS apart in my opinion is the great cast. They are consistently good without getting too cheesy or corny like some procedurals. Plus, the cast has had time to reach this level of quality. The show didn’t start out number one. It took time that most shows don’t get these days.

      • Templar

The thing about NCIS is that I’d really love to hang out with these people. Even Palmer. Not so with CSI or Criminal Minds or even The Mantalist. Castle would be cool or Sean and Gus from Psych. But most cop shows are filled with hard a$$es. As for Glee, I’d love to put a heavy soporific in their water.

      • Don

@Templar: Yes, this is exactly what I meant but stated much better than I did, lol. I happen to enjoy NCIS & Glee (it is my guilty pleasure). :)

      • blackcurry

The NCIS characters are so well defined that they seem like real people. Makes you feel like you know them as friends. The way they work together is like a family rather than just co-workers. Love the show, particularly Mark Harmon.

    • Katy

I watch it. Got a problem with that? It’s an interesting and fun show, any way better than Glee. Glee’s may be fine for kids but it’s really a stupid show.

      • davey

You sound like such a sweet and gentle perso. Who the F**K pissed in your cereal this morning.

    • Lulu

Funny, NCIS is the ONLY show that I watch with any regularity. Same with several people I know.

      • Joni

        Same here Lulu.
“NCIS” is the only show I will not miss.
The last time I missed an original broadcast was when Hurricane Wilma took out the power for 9 days and the cable for 17 back in October 2005.

    • Otis

My wife and I watch NCIS and prefer it to the overly-ambitious now irritating Glee and increasingly boring No Ordinary Family. DWTS at 9:00; then On Demand Blue Bloods episodes we missed at 10:00.

      • Brett

I watch “No Ordinary Family” because “Glee” never appealed to me and “NCIS” runs the same episode, over and over again, with different guest stars.

    • Lynne

Must be your very small circle of friends!! It’s been one of the best shows on TV for many years now. It’s a wonderful cast and the characters are great. Keep it up NCIS….You do have a great following!

    • kaydevo

hee-hee. Since no one YOU know watches a show (Did you do a survey? How many people do you know?), then no one must be watching it. Strange, twisted, incorrect “logic.”

    • nancy

zzzzzzzzzzz. oh sorry, I read the words NCIS and fell asleep. I agree, who watches it???! My grandma doesn’t even watch it. . .

      • Sue1

You and your grandma are missing out on a great show….too bad. As for your question “who watches it??!”, the answer is 18.9 million people with different taste than you.
        Not better, just different.

    • Michael

NCIS takes more mental capacity than Glee does. That explains why you or anyone else in your boring “circle of friends” does not watch it.

    • RK

People close to death watch NCIS — the key CBS demographic.

      • What

Wait, what?! I’m nearing death? damn, but Ive only been in this planet for 18 years… noooooo /sarcasm >_>

    • Penny

I watch Ncis and so does 90% of my school.

  • mj

Parenthood hasn’t been as good this year. Lorelei/Sarah has been particularly annoying this year with her kids. Give the woman something to do besides torture them.

    • DZ

Unfortunately, I agree. I was glued to the TV last year, but after two eps this season, I can’t get into Parenthood anymore. But I still love Peter Krause.

  • mj

S.O. – wow cause I know lots of people who watch NCIS. Though that too is getting dull

  • VCI

Parenthood is one of the best shows on television right now! I can’t dis NCIS cuz i never watched it, but why can’t more people watch Parenthood, I don’t want to see it get cancelled.

  • Flip

I absolutely love Running Wilde. It gets funnier week after week. If it aired at 9 instead of Raising Hope, it would have better ratings.

    • Don

The premise of the show had kept me from watching. But last night, I actually decided to tune into Running Wilde last night. It was really funny! I hope it gets a DVD release after it gets cancelled.

    • Anneka

I too love Running Wilde and hope that Fox holds on and lets it develop.

    • Dwight

      Fa’ad is that you?

    • David

I only stuck with it because of will arnett and that it was created by mitch hurwitz. Kind of glad i did, felt the first two episodes were awful, but really enjoyed the last two, its getting much funnier… If the upcoming episodes are as funny they need to try relaunching it or advertising for it again or something

  • LM

NCIS was great last night. I know people of all ages that watch it.

  • Aaron

PLEASE people!! Starting watching Parenthood! Last night’s episode was especially great.

    • Don

Sorry. I already watch Modern Family, The Middle and No Ordinary Family. That’s my limit on shows about parenting right there.

      • davey

You should probably swap The Middle with Parenthood then.

  • carla

I have tried to watch NCIS on several ocassions, but each time it bored me to tears. I don’t know anyone who watches it and its popularity continues to astound me. I guess people really like stale, predictable, clunky procedurals.

    • RMW

You’re not into it, so it must be bad, right? You need to learn that it’s only the shows that I don’t like that suck.

    • Sue1

Yes, Carla, because if you say it is MUST be so.

  • shawn

Parenthood is easily the best written show on television right now. The last show aired with this good of writing was West Wing. It needs a better night/time slot.

    • Ida

I agree 100%! My daughter and I watch it together and cry every single episode!

  • Tara

Why all the NCIS hate? It’s a smart detective/mystery solver-type show. I know a bunch of people who watch it, myself included.

  • Garry

I am a huge fan of NCIS..never miss it and my friends know not to call when it is on….not that they would, most if not all are watching it as well!!

  • SUZY Q

I too am wondering about all the hate about NCIS. I understand to each their own, but I guess I was shocked. It is an absolutely amazing show. I also love Glee & Parenthood. I am glad they got Lauren Graham instead of Maura Tierney. NCIS keeps my entertained week after week. I can even watch re runs over & over again on USA. They have one of the best casts on TV right now. The chemistry is undeniable. Thank you for TIVO so I can watch Glee & NCIS!!!! Tuesdays have become one of my favortie nights on TV!!!! I look forward to it every week.

    • AD

I like Lauren Graham, but she plays the same role over and over again: cutesy, slightly ditzy (but smart underneath) and all guys fall in love with her – immedidiately. I believe Maura Tierney would have given the character more depth and nuance.

  • clc

NCIS beats GLEE everywhere except Columbus, OH where the local CBS station decided it was a wonderful move to air an election debate between two local candidates – instead of NCIS – at 8 pm on Tuesday night. They were kind enough to run NCIS in its entirety at 1:37 am – a time when everyone is available to watch the #1 show on CBS of course. I suddenly became a GLEE fan.

    • Templar

Doesn’t that just frost your cookies? CBS preempted Castle the other night for a football game!
