'Dancing With the Stars' helps to boost viewership for 'Castle'; 'House' stands tall

ratingsImage Credit: Ray Mickshaw/Fox; Adam Taylor/NBC; Monty Brinton/CBSAnother terrific performance by Dancing With the Stars helped ABC to rule on Monday among adults 18-49 (3.5 rating/9 share) and viewers (16.7 million). The two-hour edition of Dancing was the night’s most-watched show (19.2 million), which did Castle a solid at 10: The sexy drama won its timeslot in viewers (11.5 million) and many of the female demographics, but came in second among adults 18-49 behind Hawaii Five-0, which averaged 10.5 million. Still, that’s great news for the Nathan Fillion drama, which looked like it was on the verge of cancellation last season before ABC programmers decided to keep it around. Occasionally, those net execs do recognize a good thing when they see it.

CBS finished second in the adult demo (3.3/9) and viewers (10.2 million) for the night, though its comedies took slight hits in the ratings. The network’s rookie Mike & Molly posted a 3.4/8 in the demo – down 3% versus last week and its lowest-rated telecast to date. It still finished second in its timeslot among viewers (10.9 million). How I Met Your Mother posted a season low among adults 18-49 (3.2/9) and averaged 8.0 million. Rules of Engagement averaged a 2.9/8 and 7.8 million viewers, followed by Two and a Half Men (4.3/11, 13.3 million) and Five-0 (2.9/8).

Each 18-49 ratings point represents 1.3 million viewers.

Over on Fox, House finished its fifth week in a row as Monday’s top-rated scripted drama among adults 18-49 (3.5/10). It averaged 9.4 million. And Lie to Me was up 5% versus last week in adults 18-49 (2.0/5) and averaged 5.6 million. Fox finished the night in third place among viewers (7.6 million) and adults 18-49 (2.8/7).

NBC gave good news to genre fans Monday by announcing that it picked up a full season of The Event, even though the freshman drama’s ratings aren’t exactly earth-shattering: The show was flat versus last week among adults 18-49 (2.2/5), which was still its lowest-rated telecast to date. It averaged 6.3 million viewers. At least we’ll have a full season to find out where the writers are going with the story. Elsewhere on the Peacock, Chase posted a 1.6/4 in the demo and lured 5.1 million eyeballs.

The CW was in repeats Monday.

Anybody know, how the fact that millions of people in the NY, PA areas have had FOX cut from their TVs, affect the ratings right now?

  • Storm

I love Castle. Im 21 and I watch it every Monday night. I will continue to watch it even after Dancing is over. So Dancing or not-LOVE CASTLE! But yeah-I watch dancing too so it helps I dont have to change channel.

Chuck a loser, NBC wake up, cancel this

    • Will

I don’t see any stats for Chuck…so don’t hate a show that is hitting it’s stride. Maybe if Chuck was moved to a different night, and not up against House, How I Met Your Mother, and Rules of Engagement, then it might have some more viewers. This season is just starting, I say the next episode when Chuck’s mom is back will present viewers with the extra incentive to watch.

It’s about to be picked up for nine more episodes. What a lack of faith

He’s just trying to stir up a stream. Ignore him folks.

      • Diva

Even better it got 11 more episodes. CHUCK ME

      Get real

Verge of cancellation for Castle last season? What?? First time I read that anywhere. Love, love, love Castle. IMO best show on TV. Would be even better if we had our recap back. (Hint, hint.)

    • Nerwen Aldarion

Castle started off really really low in the fall. But it gained viewership like the little tortoise that could, by Spring it was a lock for renewal

    • queue55

@Lola…ITA! We need the recap back! NOW!

  • jfms777

Yes, Lola, ABC had considered doing the ax. It was a poor #2 against CSI Miami, and ABC wondered if another show could do better–given the huge lead-in from DWTS.

Lie to Me just proved that the time slot didn’t kill LoneStar. Mostly the marketing and the concept did.

Meanwhile, NAKED HEAT, the new hardcover novel by “Richard Castle,” is hitting the bestseller lists.

  • Blue Silver

I credit Castle coming to Comic Con last summer. I was a sometime-watcher for Season 1, but couldn’t wait for Season 2. DWTS? WTF is that? (yes, I know; you couldn’t pay me to watch it).

  • nancy

I look forward everyweek to watching castle after dancing with the stars! love, love, love it! it gets better & better each week.

  • Tracy

Recap, please! Monday’s episode woulda been perfect recap material, given all of the nods to TV shows (Grey’s Anatomy … Dr. Rhonda Chimes. Ha!) and films (Romancing the Stone).

  • hickstead

I think Castle’s numbers might have been high this week because it was doing a Grey’s Anatomy spoof, not just because of DWTS. The episode was previewed during GA last week and many times on the network since then, and people were talking about it on the GA boards, too. That’s why I tuned in. I had never watched the show before, and lo and behold I really enjoyed it! I will be tuning in regularly now.

  • Brian

LOVE Castle! My wife and I look forward to this show – when will Richard Castle and Beckett finally get honest with each other? Hope the show doesn’t go down hill once that happens…
