CBS takes Tuesday; 'Running Wilde' and 'Parenthood' struggle to stay alive

ratingsImage Credit: Eric McCandless/ABC; Myles Aronowitz/Fox; Chris Hastings/NBCLike we even have to remind anyone how popular NCIS remains: CBS won yet another Tuesday, thanks to its pair-up of the Mark Harmon starrer and NCIS: LA from 8-10 p.m. But The Good Wife deserves some credit too: The sophomore drama, like the NCIS shows, also won its timeslot among adults 18-49 (2.6 rating/7 share) and viewers (12.2 million). NCIS was the night’s most watched show with 19 million viewers while the spinoff attracted 15.9 milion.

All of the CBS shows posted gains versus last week. Overall, the Eye won the night in adults 18-49 with a 3.6/10 and 15.7 million viewers. Each 18-49 ratings point is worth 1.3 million.

Fox lost some momentum by running repeats of Glee and Raising Hope, which did no favors for the poor Running Wilde starring Keri Russell. It only averaged a 1.2/3 and was down 14% versus last week among adults 18-49. It averaged 3 million. Fox finished fourth for the night in viewers (4.6 million) and adults 18-49 (1.7/5).

ABC was second for the night in the key demo (2.4/7) and viewers (10.3 million), mostly due to the results episode of Dancing With the Stars, which averaged 15.2 million and a 3.1/8. But it’s still tough going for Michael Chiklis and his super-powered clan on No Ordinary Family. The freshman drama only averaged 2.2/6 in the demo — down 4% versus last week — which translates to its lowest-rated telecast to date. The show averaged 7.4 million. Detroit 1-8-7, however, was up 12% versus last week in the demo (1.9/5) and lured 8.2 million.

Despite the dips, ABC reports that it’s still stronger on the night versus last year and is the only network to see its total viewer count improve. See? It’s never hard for the networks to look for a bright side.

It’s doubtful that anyone over at NBC has anything good to say about its Tuesday shows. The Biggest Loser only posted a 2.5/7 — down 4% versus last year — and averaged 6.9 million viewers. And the mourning continues for Parenthood, which hobbled in with a 1.9/5 — its lowest-rated telecast ever (it brought in 4.8 million). The Peacock deserves to take a lot of lumps for some of its programming decisions over the last two years but not for the well-produced and ridiculously underappreciated Parenthood.

Overall, the Peacock benefitted from the Glee rerun on Fox by coming in third for the night among 18-49 (2.3/6) and viewers (6.3 million). The CW was helped, too, by repeats on Fox. One Tree Hill earned its best women 18-49 rating (1.4/4) since the season premiere.  Each 18-49 rating point for that specific demo represents 659,700 women.

I hope Parenthood survives! I love that show. It rocked last night!!

    • Liz

I agree! I love Parenthood! I also think it’s time for NBC to put down Biggest Loser. I was a loyal viewer for many many years and over the past few seasons, contestants have gotten to be so, well, MEAN! It’s no longer inspirational TV.

      • RK

You obviously missed it last night, then.

      • Pep

Agreed. Parenthood deserves a better lead-in. Biggest Loser has gotten tired and these bloated two hour episodes doesn’t help their cause.

      • Zakry

Is Biggest Loser meant to be inspirational television? Is it a game? Is it both? CAN it be both? That seems to be the confusion with viewers, IMO.

BL is a GAME, as the contestants made very, very clear last night. Yes, all of these will lose weight, which is great, but there is a huge cash prize at the end, which no one has lost sight of. I think BL needs to decide what it is. If this was just show about losing weight, great. If it is cutthroat reality competition show, great also. It cannot be both. The trainers are confused, the viewers are confused, the ratings are starting to suffer. It’s time.

    • brandy

Yep. Parenthood is SO stinking good. I don’t get why more people aren’t watching this.

I also am a big fan of Running Wilde. Sad to see it slowly dying like this.

    • parenthood fan

i get goosebumps during every episode. of course, it’s not going to last.

    • No Max Limit

      Keep Parenthood.
Drop Max. We get it already.

      • Ida

        agreed.

  • Jo King

People should watch Parenthood! It’s one of the best shows on TV and it has one of the best casts! C’mon, NBC, give it some advertising!

    • khm

Parenthood is such a great show. I really hope NBC doesn’t lemon this one and cancel it. I used to love Biggest Loser, but I stopped watching this year. Two-hour episodes are just plain ridiculous. And while I’m on the “bashing NBC” tangent, why was Outsourced picked up and where are they going to put Parks and Recreation??

      • marymary

Please don’t drop Parenthood- it would help if maybe EW gave it some coverage instead of 3 articles per week (if not more) on Dancing with the Stars or Real Housewives of Topeka, Kansas.. I am just saying… EW show some love to a show that really deserves it.

      • Pan

YES! Where is Parks and Rec going? This was also my concern when I heard Outsourced was picked up. I’ve been enjoying Outsourced as a day after Hulu show. I hope that Outsourced being picked up doesn’t lead to the destruction of PArks and Rec because it was seriously great last season from the first eps “Gay Penguin” Wedding to the very last moments of the finale.

  • Please

    Move Parenthood to Thursdays!!

    • SLT

I love Parenthood too but I don’t think moving it to Thursday’s (one of the most competitive nights on television) is going to help it survive. If anything, I think moving it to Wednesdays or Mondays might work or just changing the lead-in show. The Biggest Loser isn’t a good pairing with that thow imo. I’m not really sure what they would put with it but I really hope they keep it around. That’s one of my favorite shows ever. I even like Dax Sheppard now b/c of it!

      • Sooz

I’d watch Parenthood if it wasn’t opposite The Good Wife. Sorry Casey, but Dan wins this one. :-)

      • Monty

Ah, Sooz, I love you for pointing out Casey and Dan are opposite one another.

      • Lauren

I’m confused… Casey? Dan? Any chance someone can explain this to me? :)

      • DJ

If I remember right, Casey and Dan were Peter Krause and Josh Charles’ characters when they co-starred on “Sports Night.”

      • Lauren

IMDB-ed it – you’re absolutely right! Thanks, DJ!

      • SJ

Move it to Monday night and I think it would work, just not against Castle.

  • Summer

I really hope they don’t cancel Parenthood. I really enjoy that show.

  • Steve

Parenthood is a wonderful show. I just don’t think it should be on at 10 p.m. Make it a 9 o’clock show and move it to a different night and it might get better ratings. Parenthood does such a wonderful job with the reality of being a parent, in so many different ways…and the way they handle the Max story is wonderful and moving…I hope it stays on the air…

    • Lauren

I agree, I do think it should be on earlier.

      • Cathy

Agreed; I can’t watch it at 10, and it’s really not a 10 p.m. show. NBC needs to help their good shows, or else it will cost them even more in the long run to find something else.

    • Leila

I agree, 10:00 p.m. is bedtime for people who wake up at 5, 6 in the morning for their commute…

  • Zoe

Parenthood is a wonderful show–great acting and writing, and beautifully shot. What a great Halloween episode they did last night. It kills me that more people aren’t watching it. I’m not sure where it would do better on the schedule, but if NBC has the nerve to renew a show like Chase, it should be able to do better with Parenthood.

  • mb

That’s unfortunate about Parenthood. It really is such a wonderful show. I don’t understand how this reporting of viewership can be accurate though. So many people are dvr’ing programs or watch them On Demand after they air. Seeing overnight numbers does some of our beloved shows an unjustice.

    • Dorkophile

Agreed COMPLETELY. I know they count DVR numbers somehow, but often times I don’t DVR a show, just catch it on hulu the next day, which I KNOW they don’t count. This week I missed Parenthood and many other shows because of baseball; why is there no mention of the playoffs in this review? I think the reason viewership for many shows dipped a little this week is baseball, am I wrong?

      • Susan

I watch Parenthood on Hulu every week. I love this show, look forward to it every week and wish my vote counted. This is a great show.

  • LOL

Detroit 1-8-7 is my favorite new show of the season.

    • cathi

      Mine too!

    • Agree

I love Detroit 1-8-7. Best new show this year

  • k8t

Parenthood is an amazing show, people should start watching it! I really hope it does not get canceled!!!

  • Sarah

Count me in among those who enjoy Parenthood. Although I am not thrilled about Sarah dating her skeevy boss.

    • Sina

I think Sarah and all that stupid over talking is ruining this show. Why is Sarah going out with her boss which will make her brother upset. They need to go back to how they were last season. Last season was perfect. What ever happened to Amber and her cousin’s ex boyfriend. They were such a sweet and cute pairing. I miss Sarah and Amber’s teacher. They were TOO cute.

  • Vicki

Love Parenthood and hope NBC gives it a chance – I’d love to see it move to Thursday night. It’s one of the few shows I feel good after watching. Clearly, the family is much funnier and beautiful (and larger) than mine, but I can see issues I face in them…

  • kat5476

I really don’t know why more people aren’t watching Parenthood. We watch it every week and come away saying, “Wow, that is a fantastic show!” It will be so sad if it gets canceled.

  • Lauren

NOOOOO I love Parenthood! Apparently I am in the minority of people who don’t watch detective shows.

  • Luddite

I don’t know why my comment isn’t showing up, so I’ll repeat it. If you think Parenthood is well-made but underappreciated (and I couldn’t agree more), then show it some appreciation! There are 15 articles about Glee every day – just devote one a week to Parenthood.

    • mem

I agree! Last year EW recapped Parenthood but this year…nothing. They say what a great show it is then why aren’t the showing it the love?

      • sure

I third the motion. And since there’s no longer a recap, I’ll use this forum for my comment on last night’s ep. Anyone else agree that Sarah is getting really annoying (I’m afraid I’m gonna get bashed by the Lauren Graham/Lorelei fanbase, of which I am also a part)? I mean are we supposed to think it’s cute & endearing that she always busts into peoples’ offices during work hours with some mindless drama/emergency, where she expects the other person to just drop whatever they’re doing to attend to her minor meltdown? Somehow this schtick worked for Lorelei but it’s not working for Sarah.
Also agree that it would work so much better @ 9pm.

      • Dee

It’s no longer being recapped by TWOP as well. I think it is one of the best shows on television, so what gives?

      • Monty

sure, I agree with you! I did love Gilmore Girls but Lorelei could be just as annoying and self centered as Sarah is. What annoys me to most is that she chose the boss over the warehouse guy. Idiot.

    • Elyse G.

please please please do recaps and show Parenthood some love. It’s an incredible show that is not getting the respect that it deserves.

    • Temp

Absolutely! I know the site cant recap every show on TV, but seriously, how many terrible terrible reality shows do you need to recap?

Americas Next top model? Really? The Apprentice? Two chef shows?…THREE “real housewife” shows? Jeeze.

Instead of all that recap a good show like Parenthood.

(Im really just horrified…THREE real housewife recaps? …next top model? That show is the worst thing ever put on tv!)

  • dianne

I love Parenthood but I agree it needs to be on earlier in the night.

    • Gail Skinner

Hopefully they won’t drop Parenthood. It’s a great show for the entire family. We need more like it instead of stupid reality shows
