CBS scores another Wednesday win; 'Modern Family' continues to rule timeslot

wednesday-ratingsImage Credit: Eric McCandless/ABC; Justin Sullivan/Getty Images; Monty Brinton/CBSThe Espada tribe may have made an idiotic move by snuffing out Yve instead of Dan but the fans are still eating up the aging reality show: Survivor won its timeslot on Wednesday among adults 18-49 (3.5 rating/11 share) and viewers (11.9 million). Buoyed by another heavily-viewed episode of Criminal Minds (14.2 million) and The Defenders (9.9 million), CBS ended up overtaking the baseball playoffs on Fox and won the night in viewers (12 million) and adults 18-49 (3.1/9).

The National League playoff game between the Phillies and the Giants on Fox averaged a 2.7/8 in the demo — up 50% versus last year’s Game 4 on TBS, which was enough to give Fox a second place win on Wednesday in the key demographic. It averaged 8.3 million.

Modern Family continues to rock at 9 over at ABC (my, that Emmy win sure has done wonders for this show!). It won its timeslot among 18-49 (4.7/13) yet again and cleaned up in all the key demos, including teens. The episode averaged 11.9 million viewers. The new comedy Better With You was flat versus last week in the demo (2.1/6) and is still pulling its lowest-rated numbers for the season at 8:30.  It’s only averaging 6.9 million viewers. The Middle averaged a 2.6/8 and 8.5 million viewers at 8, while Cougar Town earned a 3.7/9 and 7.4 million viewers at 9:30. The Whole Truth did a measly 1.4/4 at 10 and averaged 4.5 million. Yikes.

Overall, ABC tied Fox for second among 18-49 (thanks again to Modern Family) and averaged 7.3 million viewers.

On NBC, Undercovers actually posted a 7% gain among 18-49 (1.5/5) and averaged 5.8 million eyeballs. Law & Order: SVU (2.6/7) averaged 8.4 million, while Law & Order: LA (2.4/7) lured 8.0 million. NBC earned 7.4 million viewers for the night and a 2.6/6 in the demo. Each 18-49 ratings point represents 1.3 million.

Better With You has gotten a little better. I think if ABC allows this one to stick around for a bit, it will continue to improve. Then again, I just need a Joanna Garcia fix since Priviledged is gone…

    • hello

i agree with you 100%. i too need my joanna garcia fix, shes great!

    • Tasha

ITA about Better With You. I thought it was really good last night & laughed quite a bit (maybe b/c I know someone just like the Mom & the emails, was so cracking up). Hope it stays around b/c it really has potential

Modern Family’s ratings might be UP but the number of time I laugh per episode is DOWN. I find the show really sluggish this year – silly characters doing silly things – same as last year minus the clever writing.

    • Jason

In other words, “Hi, I’m a troll and I don’t actually watch the show.”
Last night was one of the best episodes of the series.

      • kylla

        Thank you! My thoughts exactly.

      • TK

Now, I can’t speak for last season, but I have been watching this season and last nights episode had me laughing out load several times and I NEVER do that!

  • Trey

Why does The Middle get absolutely no love what so ever? Barely a mention ever Thursday morning. It is one of the few shows that debuted last year that has grown in viewers over last year, and did it with no Emmy’s and very little coverage (I’m talking to you EW). It is almost 100% word of mouth. Tell me EW? Why?

    • Chris

The same reason why Two and a Half Men doesn’t get any coverage. It’s not a funny show.

      • Phil

@Chris, actually the Middle is very funny, it’s well written and the cast is terrific. The fact that you put it in the same category as Two and a Half Men proves that you are totally ignorant on the subject. STFU Thanks!

      • Asher

Sorry, but I do not like Two and A Half Men and like The Middle a lot. Its great to have a show on TV that is about nothing more than a very middle-class, suburban family trying to get by in funny and clever ways. I can barely watch Better With You. I’ll watch it, but I just barely enjoy it. The writing is going to have to get sharper for me to keep coming back.

I hate being the spoiler police, but I cannot believe there was a survivor spoiler in the first sentence of this article! That’s really not cool.

    • Tim

Well said Josh. I recorded the show since my wife was working. Unfortunately I now know the outcome of show. Quite irritating Lynette.

  • Rusty Shackleford

The Middle is a funny show, but I cannot stand Better With You. Maybe if they got rid of that Casey character and I don’t like Debra Jo playing a mean character, just seems so out of character for her.

    • Mary

Rusty, thank you for saying it! I can’t stand Casey’s character or the actor that plays him and I feel like the show could do well if they got rid of him.

  • SHELLY

Better With You is funny. I think I would like it better without the laugh track though. I don’t need anyone to tell me when to laugh.

  • Jethro

I have not watched any of the comedies on Wedneasday even last season when they debuted. Just not in to the stars of these shows. Heaton, Cox, Burrell, O’Neill, didn’t even watch their other shows when they were on.

I enjoy one hour dramas, have to say, L&O: SVU has been exceptional this season and L&O: LA is growing on me. Actually caught The Whole Truth and now know why this show is not doing well, the obnoxiuos character or Rob Morrow, he’s self-centered, egotistical, pretty much like the character on the other network, Belushi of The Defenders.

  • Iakovos

I am disappointed with BETTER WITH YOU, as I figured from its cast and creators, it would be, well… BETTER than it is. A little too noisy and mean and so not based in any reality. MIDDLE, MODERN and COUGAR need a new partner. I do not want to voerdose on episodes again as we did last year after HANK bombed. Maybe WHOLE TRUTH needs to fill the open Thursday or Friday slots on ABC’s skein. It might do well there. It is not a terrible show. I think SUV is done but LOLA shows promise. I am weary of the darkness that is MINDS on CBS.

  • Rusty Shackleford

I hate the title Cougar Town. I totally thought it was about something else but caught an episode a few weeks ago and it was funny, not what I expected with that title.

  • justin

Wednesdays have the least amount of shows that I watch(four), but because of Modern Family and Criminal Minds, look forward to a lot. MF probably aired the funniest episode in the series last night, while CM’s episode was beyond creepy(which is a very good thing to me). Couple that with Undercovers and the Defenders and that translated to a great night for me.

  • Greg

modern family is funny, but it will never be seinfeld

  • Dave

Well first of all, nothing will ever be Seinfeld. Second of all, I don’t think Modern Family is even trying to be Seinfeld. Modern Family has a completely different tone and sense of humor than Seinfeld. Apples and oranges.
