CBS still controls Thursday; 'Big Bang Theory' posts record ratings

big-bang-theory-emanationImage Credit: Sonja Flemming/CBSThe balance of power has definitely shifted on Thursdays: For the first five weeks of the TV season, CBS has come out on top for the night in viewers (13.6 million) and adults 18-49 (3.3 rating/9 share). That’s a first since 2005 that the Eye has won five weeks in a row. The Big Bang Theory was Thursday’s No. 1 show in the key demographic (4.0/13) for the first time this year, and was up in viewers versus last week (12.9 million to 12.7 million). CSI (14.7 million) was the most-watched show of the night and actually attracted its largest audience since April 8, while $#*! My Dad Says won its timeslot among viewers (10.9 million) and adults 18-49 (3.1/9). At 10, The Mentalist was first in viewers (14.2 million) and second in adults (2.9/8).

Each 18-49 ratings point represents 1.3 million viewers.

Game 5 between the Phillies and the Giants helped Fox to rank No. 2 for the night among adults 18-49 (2.9/8) and viewers (9.3 million). Over on ABC, Grey’s Anatomy continued to rule the 9 p.m. timeslot in 18-49 (3.9/10) even though it represented its lowest-rated telecast so far this season. The drama averaged 10.7 million. Private Practice earned a 2.8/8 and averaged 7.8 million. The network finished the night in third place among adults 18-49 (2.6/7) and viewers (7.6 million).

Gee, its been tough for those (mostly) swell comedies on NBC (I still don’t get Outsourced). Community earned a 1.9/6 and 4.5 million, followed by 30 Rock (2.2/7, 5.2 million), The Office (3.4/9, 6.8 million), and that aforementioned head-scratcher of a new comedy (1.3/4, 4.9 million). The Apprentice earned a trifle 1.3/4 and averaged 3.8 million. NBC, as expected, finished the night in fourth place among 18-49 (2.1/6) and viewers (4.7 million).

On the CW, The Vampire Diaries ranked No. 1 at 8 with females 12-34; the drama averaged 3.6 million.

There is nothing on at 8PM on Thursdays, its winning by default

    • Shane

Community is awesome. You should give it a try. I usually DVR Big Bang since I feel a little more partial to Community. :)

      • SLT

I do the same Shane. Community is one of my faves. I think it helped CBS that Bones wasn’t on due to baseball. I know that’s why I was able to record TBBT (which I haven’t been able to do all season due to schedule conflicts).

      • Liz

I do the opposite! Haha! I love BBT and Community and was very sad when they ended up against each other this year!

    • Monty

If you don’t know what you should be watching at 8, you’re streets behind.

      VIVA COMMUNITY!

      • Holly

“You’re streets behind”!? Is that a common expression or something? I’m “alleys away” from understanding what that means.

  • ej

Bet NBC wishes it had ER still. Hopefully they move Parenthood to Thursday at 10 and The Appentice to Saturday Nights.

    • Michael

If you move Parenthood to Thursdays, they’ll have Outsourced as a lead-in. That would be disastrous for a show that already is tanking in the ratings.

  • Brad

Actually between Big Bang, Community, Bones, Grey’s Anatomy and Vampire Diaries, I’d say that the 8pm spot on Thursdays is the biggest of the week. I don’t watch all those shows myself but they are all either critically acclaimed or highly rated.

    • t.t

I watch all those shows except for bones so its a hassle for me
although I choose to watch vampire diaries on time and tivo community and the big bang theory then i get greys off itunes :P it is a hassle but hey.

Fox shot itself in the foot by airing some awfully boring stuff with some guys swinging this wood thing at a ball. BOOOOOOORING
    Where’s my Fringe?

    • Steven

While I agree baseball can be boring. How did FOX shoot itself in the foot when 9.3 million people watched baseball and Fringe has not reached that all season?

      • Jay

I dont know… I’m just pissed that baseball gets prime-time showing. Isn’t that what ESPN is for? I’d rather watch paint dry, personally

  • Shawn

I know a lot of it has to do with Big Bang, but I’m sad to see that Outsourced gets higher viewership than Community, which is up there will 30 Rock as the best thing NBC has to offer.

    • Tom

I think it’s on at 8:30 next week after the Shrek special, so hopefully that’ll help

    • Michael

Outsourced can actually be viewed as the bigger failure. It’s very difficult to start off the night for most networks. There is no lead-in. Community, therefore, already has its work cut out for it.
Cougar Town gets a 3.0 rating fairly consistently, which is very good for ad revenue, but it has a lead-in that averages over 4.0 in the demo…if you look at CT on it’s own terms, it’s a success. If you look at the drastic drop-off in the demo from the 9:00 hour, it’s another story entirely. The same applies to Outsourced. The show has a massive lead-in(in the 18-49 demo) but loses about 40 percent. Community and Outsourced aren’t separated by much now. As more people abandon the craptastic Outsourced, those margins will be minimal by May. I’d love to see them give Community the 9:30 hour. That seems to be the better slot for that show anyway.

      • Tom

I agree. If Community had the 9:30 slot, I’m sure it’d be averaging 5.5 million viewers or so, both because it would have the Office lead-in and because it wouldn’t have to compete with the Big Bang Theory for viewers. I’m surprised they don’t move things around at all

  • nodnarb

When are we going to see the two guys bang, isn’t that why they call it the Big Bang Theory?

    • Chris

It refers to the explosion which created the universe 14.7 billion yrs ago.

      • Dr. Geek

Ahem, more precisely, it refers to the expansion of the already-existent universe from its former, infinitely-dense state. Glaven.

  • jfms777

    Remember. No BONES last night.

  • Karate Pants

Who the eff is watching Outsourced???

  • Buffy Freak

It’s so depressing that Bleep My dad Says gets more than double 30 Rock’s ratings…last night’s episode was hliarious…

    • Karate Pants

      It’s totally insane.

    • CMU

      America makes me sad. :(

  • Pete

It’s amazing how much TV viewership has fallen when you consider that 10 million viewers is only 3% of the population. Even 20 million for AI is only 6% of the population, but it is considered a huge hit.

  • robinepowell

Interesting how TBBT is doing well in the ratings without its lead actress. I guess if there weren’t anymore Penny, the show could go on. ;)

  • Chris

First episode without Penny and best ratings. Hope they don’t get rid of her.

  • Shamus N.

Private Practice needs to just f****** die. What can I do to get it cancelled?
