Caprica is toast. Syfy has announced that the low-rated Battlestar Galactica prequel has been canceled.
“The remaining first run episodes of Caprica – airing Tuesdays at 10/9c – will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2,” said the network in a statement. “These final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”
“We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series,” said Mark Stern, EVP of original programming at Syfy. “Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”
The news comes less than a week after Syfy unveiled plans for another Galactica prequel, this one set 10 years into the first Cylon war.

Unreal – how about it was not given the chance to build an audience i expected more from syfy this sucks
It got a chance. In two timeslots. And it kept dropping. Latest ratings? Not even 900k viewers.
Well, SGU wasn’t that far off – only 1 mil. It’s probably next.
Well, I watch bother shows religiously – but never in a way that they can count. Of course, I’ll never be doing that – if they want my viewing information, they can pay for it. most genre viewers are not traditional viewers, so to suggest that only 900K watched the last show is absurd. They literally have NO IDEA how many people watched the show. Further, they say that only a million watched the last ep of SGU, when it’s pretty popular with genre (and non-traditional viewers).
I hope they re-play the last season of Battlestar Galactica. Man, that show rocks and I didn’t get to see the whole season. Also, I love Warehouse 13.
I watched both shows religiously too, but I never even checked out BSG until the second season. I mean…if they had canceled that show after S01 I never would have even clued into it. I DVR every show I watch. Is my vote counted in their ratings? I’m sooo mad!!!!
I don’t think you understand how the Nielsen system works Tarc…
Totally agree with Tarc…my viewing wasn’t recorded and I would like to add my viewing to whatever ratings were recorded, even though I’m one person. Nielsen only gets data from around 5500 households across the nation, not even remotely close to an accurate representation of our diverse group of people.
if only they would cancel SGU and bring Atlantis back
I never knew when it was on – I could never find it. I’m just finally getting to see it now with its DVD release a few weeks ago.
With SiFi, all this has happened before, and all this will happen again.
Um to Tark and Bamlam:
Do you use satalite or cable to get tv? (yes from your phone company counts too)
If so your viewing habits are known!
FINNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!
Thank you. I loved BSG. Tried so hard to like Caprica. I finally deleted it off my DVR 2 weeks ago. Couldn’t deal with it. Too much religious stuff, not enough cylon stuff. Nowhere near the caliber of BSG.
Duh, he doesn’t watch Caprica. He posts on every article. I thought that the show had promise. Not everything is going to be an instant masterpiece like BSG. I wish it had more time to bake.
Shut up! I seen the show and it suck.
I really can’t understand why you would be “happy” to see it cancelled. If you didn’t like it, why were you still watching it? Disgrunted BSG fan, perhaps? Well let me tell you something. FORGET BSG. Yes, Caprica’s a prequel. So what? Caprica wasn’t supposed to be an antidote for BSG withdrawl. When I first saw it advertised, I didn’t care what it was connected to, I just cared about what I was seeing, and the premise there. I had never watched BSG before. Didn’t even know what BSG was. And I loved Caprica for what it was: an amazing, intelligent show. Sigh.
No, he didn’t watch the show. Don’t waste your energy on him, he’s a hack.
It was given a fair shot. I love BSG like most people love their kids, but Caprica was too slow to be commercially viable. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t good. It was great at times, but it was no Blood on the Scales or 33. The Caprica series never lived up to the Caprica pilot unfortunately.
I disagree. Like one person said, if they pulled the chain on BSG with its ratings first season, look at what we’d have lost! Splitting the seasons was a horrible mistake. Folks were finally finding the show, then it was gone! Then it was back, and three weeks in, they cancel it? Not a fair shot at all.
SyFy talks about the “obvious quality,” how about having some faith in that quality and that audiences will find it? Yet, it can continue with SGU, nonsense like Warehouse 13, and let’s face it, if Eureka’s cast weren’t so charming, the show itself would be awful.
GOOD!
The show sucked. I like some soap opera with my sci-fi… but I hate sci-fi in my soap opera… and this was total soap-opera.
I really liked this serie, and still do. It was like love at the first sight. There is something about it… A hole sense of drama that reminds me in some way of how I first felt by playng Max Payne… Maybe it was the music, plus the mafia climate… But the thing is, that this serie is a real peace of art, it’s just so beautifull! The hole reality that it brings on: the future technology, the “true reality video games”, the conspiracys, everything about it just seems to fit right. And now Syfy cancels it. Well, Van Gogh never had much audience too, not in life afterall. Maybe it just need some more time, or DIVULGATION. Or maybe it has to die to bring more attention to its high quality of entertainment and artistic valor. And we can only hope to its rebirth or resurrection. Let just pray for the Gods… Or for the God… Whatever brings them all back!

It’s hard to build a following or get interested in a series that is broken up and cast to the four winds. Why didn’t they just show all sixteen episodes from the beginning in the same season instead of a few here, a few there and now the last five episodes in 2011. WTF!? Either commit to the series or cancel it, but at least show it all the way through. No wonder people were complaining.
Bummer. Hope this clears the way for Chrome and Blood though.
Did anyone else chuckle at the FINAL FIVE episodes? Ha.
I did!
Same here!
You see, I never really liked Caprica. I mean it was interesting, but I wish they would have just skipped over this to the Actual Cylon War stuff. I mean I want to know how Zoe and Tamara connect to cylons and were the Final Five come in, maybe this new prequel will answer that. Although, I will say I would have liked Lacy’s character too, had they developed her more.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
ditto
double ditto.
almost a triple rainbow. but definitely a triple ditto.
Make it a quadruple ditto. That sucks.
I’m so disappointed it was canceled.
Easily wrap-up-able in Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, if that goes to series. Probably will.
did they wrap anything up, or are we just left hanging?
Very sad news. It was a quality show, but I think it was just a little TOO cerebral to catch on. Definitely the smartest genre show on TV right now, but that’s not always a good thing.
This totally sucks. I like the show. It tried something different but it just didn’t connect with a lot of people. In this case I do understand why it wasn’t for everyone. Too bad…so sad.
Finally! I stopped watching after 5 episodes it was so awful.
so agree with you. the first few eps were so promising then it just seemed to loose its way.
I agree that the first few were the best, but it still had promise. Sorry that it was cancelled.
Lose, not Loose. Though I disagree with your sentiment.
Couldn’t disagree with you more. The show didn’t “loose” (sic) its way. It *found* its way, and in so doing, lost the likes of you as viewers, which is no big loss in my opinion.
bit of a shame but lets face it there was a lot of filler in between the good stuff, maybe they shouldnt have tried to drag it out but instead have made a highly paced mini series of it.
You’re totally right. It just wasn’t viable as a series- it began to feel like a hot mess, especially this last season. But as a mini-series its pacing problems could have been resolved.
I blame Samantha. It’s her fault. She just admitted it. j/k
Sad news. Syfy never should have broken up their Friday night fall programming – SGU, Caprica, Sanctuary. That was gold, right there. SGU isn’t doing much better in the ratings department – I wonder if they’re next.
That’s what happens when you make a show with no likeable characters
That’s one big reason why I stopped watching!
And without any singing high school students!
this was a show for inteligent people that could go beyond the low end dramas composed of likable characters. people who see shows based soly on likable characters give scifi a bad name. they are usualy retards
You’re missing some letters. And some capitalizations. And some sense.
lol grammar nazi..? go back into your hole.
Nice try. Based on your similar abysmal attempt at writing it’s fairly obviously that you are just Ric under a different guise.
“fairly obviously?”
Exactly. I didn’t like anyone. Anyways, I hope this means Eric Stoltz is free to direct more episodes of Glee because I loved the ep he directed.
Agreed. I watched part of the first season and I HATED every single character. I liked how the show was smart but I just couldn’t pull myself to continue watching it.
I only liked two characters in Caprica
Who cares how many characters you liked? Is that the barometer of good television now? Christ pudd’n. This cancellation is a tragedy.
To ‘Reason Prevails’, yes, it matters ENTIRELY how you feel about the characters. If you don’t care for them, you don’t care what happens to them and since shows are all about what happens to said characters…you won’t watch it, hence the low ratings. I thought this was obvious.
BSG and Caprica suffer from ONE thing; Ronald Moore. The first season of BSG was the best SCIFI TV in the history of TV… and the problem was the Media and the fans let Moore know this and it went straight to his head. Subsequent seasons, and this convoluted story Caprica, are the result of one man’s ego buried underneath a ton of BS. Too bad too, he wrote from terrific Star Trek episodes in his day, and even Carnivale was pretty decent (again, just a short run series) Moore is too fragile of ego to handle the responsibility of a long running series. And yes I know, his involvement in Caprica was limited, but he set the tone and his direction is what people listened to.
Caprica had a lot of potential, but no one wants Stanley Kubrick every single week, you know?
I’d taek Stanley Kubrick every week over the drek that passes for “successful” series like.
I couldn’t agree more, Jason. Getting so tired of the lowest common denominator writing on network/basic cable these days. Meanwhile, Warehouse 13, which is fun by juvenile as hell, is a hit.
Carnivale was awesome, not just good.
Sigh. Looking back I think Carnivale was even more awesome than I thought then, at least compared to all the crap thats available now. You think it will ever be brought back ? because they basically left us hanging, or maybe it will come back as a mini series.
I agree with Mykosmo!!! Goodbye Crapica
NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
