Categories: Glee, Scoop

glee-christmas-episodeImage Credit: Miranda Penn Turin/FoxIf you listen very closely in the next few seconds, you’re likely to hear a strange and wondrous noise: the sound of Gleeks everywhere tearing open their letters to Santa. Why? To update their wish lists!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the Fox hit is releasing a Christmas album featuring the cast (and k.d. lang!) singing covers of 12 holiday classics. The disc is set to drop on Nov. 16 — three weeks ahead of a special Glee Yuletide episode (airing on Dec. 7.)

A complete track listing is below. Beware: It includes what I believe to be a major spoiler about the identity of Kurt’s boyfriend! READ FULL STORY »

FX orders new Elijah Wood comedy

wilfred-elijah-woodImage Credit: FXFX announced today that it has ordered 13 episodes of Wilfred, a live-action comedy series starring Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) that’s based on the Australian series of the same name. David Zuckerman (Family Guy, American Dad) wrote the pilot and will serve as the comedy’s showrunner. Wood plays an introvert who meets Wilfred (Jason Gann, who co-created and played the title character in the Australian version of Wilfred), who’s described by Zuckerman as “part Australian Shepherd, part Russell Crowe on a bender.” The world sees Wilfred as a dog while Wood’s character Ryan sees Wilfred as a man dressed in a dog suit.

Wilfred marks Wood’s first starring role in regular series television.  “We loved how well the pilot turned out, and we were blown away by the chemistry between Elijah Wood and Jason Gann,” said Nick Grad, FX’s executive vice president of original programming. “It’s a very unique concept and we think David Zuckerman has a great take on it.”

Wilfred joins Louie, Archer, The League, and FX signature hit It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on the network’s comedy roster.

'True Blood' Scoop: Major intel on season 4!

Categories: Scoop, True Blood

true-bloodImage Credit: John P. Johnson/HBOHow apropos: It’s six days before Halloween, and I just so happen to have gotten the first casting intel on season 4 of True Blood. Wanna know who — and, in some cases, what — is in store? Read on!

* Marnie is a Z-list palm reader who’s painfully aware of what a joke she is — that is, until she comes to be possessed by the spirit of a real witch. Anybody else thinking said sorceress might turn out to be the Hallow character Alan Ball told me about back in August?

* Andy’s sister, Portia, is as easy on the eyes as she is sharp in the courtroom. And, since I hear possible portrayers have to be cool with nude scenes, we’re gonna get an eyeful. READ FULL STORY »

True! Back to the Future‘s Doc Brown has been cast as a musical hero of Walter’s who’s been in a nursing home and becomes the subject of a Fringe investigation. “Christopher plays Roscoe Joyce, a keyboardist for Walter’s favorite 1970′s band Violet Sedan Chair,” explains exec producer J.H. Wyman. Fellow EP Jeff Pinkner adds, “The lives of these two men, who have never met before, overlap in strange and unexpected ways.”

A Bones spin-off is in the works
While it’s true that series creator Hart Hanson is developing an offshoot that would revolve around the central character in Walter Sherman’s Locator novels, the new guy — a recluse who can basically find anything — will not be introduced in a December episode of Bones, sources confirm. My guess is we’ll meet him in January or February. READ FULL STORY »

'The Whole Truth': One more week to prove itself?

Categories: Television

the-wole-truth-tierneyImage Credit: Michael Ansell/ABCABC has announced a Plan B scenario for Wednesdays at 10 beginning Nov. 3 that could spell the beginning of the end for The Whole Truth, the new legal drama starring Maura Tierney. On Nov. 3, ABC will air In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts: All Access Nashville that’ll feature the Good Morning America anchor interviewing some of country music’s biggest stars. On. Nov 10, ABC will preempt all of its Wednesday programming for the Country Music Awards.

At least one more original episode of Truth will air on Oct. 27. After that, ABC execs will likely gauge whether to stick with the drama that’s only averaged 5.3 million viewers (ranked No. 69 among all primetime shows) and a 1.5 rating/4 share among adults 18-49 (ranked No. 72). If yanked, Truth will become the fourth cancellation of the 2010-11 season, behind Fox’s Lone Star, NBC’s Outlaw, and ABC’s My Generation.

Fox versus Cablevision in NY area: No end in sight

Categories: Television, TV Biz

Fox and Cablevision have yet to resolve a carriage dispute that resulted in the cable company dropping the broadcaster from its system in the New York area that serves more than 3 million homes. Fox released this statement today after viewers through Connecticut, parts of New Jersey, the New York area and a small part of Philadelphia area lost access to Fox programming last weekend: “For the past eight days Cablevision has deprived their subscribers of the National League Championship Series, possibly two weekends of NFL on Fox, and a full week of Fox’s primetime shows. Unfortunately, it’s becoming clear that Cablevision believes Fox has very limited value to their customers. We urge those Cablevision subscribers who want to see the World Series beginning Oct. 27 to switch providers or purchase an over the air antenna now.”

A Cablevision spokesman released this statement: “We welcome the FCC’s intervention. Whether through FCC action, binding arbitration or any other means, the time has come for News Corp. to end the Fox blackout of 3 million Cablevision households.”

Cablevision claims that it already pays Fox parent News Corp. more than $70 million a year for its channels, and News Corp. is demanding more than $150 million a year for the same exact programming. Cablevision says it has reached agreements with every other major broadcast station in the market — NBC, ABC, CBS and Univision — and offered News Corp. as much or more for Fox 5 as it pays any of those stations, but News Corp. is “continuing to demand” more for Fox 5 than Cablevision pays all of the other broadcast stations combined.

CBS still controls Thursday; 'Big Bang Theory' posts record ratings

Categories: Television, TV Ratings

big-bang-theory-emanationImage Credit: Sonja Flemming/CBSThe balance of power has definitely shifted on Thursdays: For the first five weeks of the TV season, CBS has come out on top for the night in viewers (13.6 million) and adults 18-49 (3.3 rating/9 share). That’s a first since 2005 that the Eye has won five weeks in a row. The Big Bang Theory was Thursday’s No. 1 show in the key demographic (4.0/13) for the first time this year, and was up in viewers versus last week (12.9 million to 12.7 million). CSI (14.7 million) was the most-watched show of the night and actually attracted its largest audience since April 8, while $#*! My Dad Says won its timeslot among viewers (10.9 million) and adults 18-49 (3.1/9). At 10, The Mentalist was first in viewers (14.2 million) and second in adults (2.9/8).

Each 18-49 ratings point represents 1.3 million viewers.

Game 5 between the Phillies and the Giants helped Fox to rank No. 2 for the night among adults 18-49 (2.9/8) and viewers (9.3 million). Over on ABC, Grey’s Anatomy continued to rule the 9 p.m. timeslot in 18-49 (3.9/10) even though it represented its lowest-rated telecast so far this season. The drama averaged 10.7 million. Private Practice earned a 2.8/8 and averaged 7.8 million. The network finished the night in third place among adults 18-49 (2.6/7) and viewers (7.6 million).

Gee, its been tough for those (mostly) swell comedies on NBC (I still don’t get Outsourced). Community earned a 1.9/6 and 4.5 million, followed by 30 Rock (2.2/7, 5.2 million), The Office (3.4/9, 6.8 million), and that aforementioned head-scratcher of a new comedy (1.3/4, 4.9 million). The Apprentice earned a trifle 1.3/4 and averaged 3.8 million. NBC, as expected, finished the night in fourth place among 18-49 (2.1/6) and viewers (4.7 million).

On the CW, The Vampire Diaries ranked No. 1 at 8 with females 12-34; the drama averaged 3.6 million.

InsideTV podcast: EW experts preview the 'Project Runway' finale, discuss Bristol Palin in a monkey suit, and name the best show on TV

Image Credit: Barbara Nitke/Lifetime Television; Adam Larkey/ABC; David M. Russell/CBS

Project Runway is down to the final three contestants, but while it looks like Mondo has the title all but wrapped up, is there a chance he might actually lose to Andy or Gretchen? Our resident Runway expert, Missy Schwartz, has seen the final collections, and joins InsideTV (Michael Slezak, Michael Ausiello, Annie Barrett and yours truly) to talk all about it on our latest InsideTV podcast. Could there be an upset in the making, or is it Mondo all the way? Also on the menu this week: Entertainment Weekly critic Ken Tucker pops by to give us his pick for the best show on TV. Could it be The Good Wife? Modern Family? Or is there a dark horse in the mix? He also gets into a deliciously nasty spat with Ausiello over his pick for biggest TV disappointment this season. FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! Plus, Slezak eats serious crow for last week’s fearless (and foolhardy) Dancing With the Stars prediction, and we contemplate how in the name of the Medallion of Power Marty managed to not get voted off of Survivor: Nicaragua. All that and more (Mad Men! Glee! Raising Hope!) on the latest edition of the InsideTV. Either download the mp3 file here to listen on the go, or click on the player. And if you’d like to have your TV question addressed and answered on the next edition, just tweet it to @InsideTVPodcast.
