Nancy O'Dell replaces Mary Hart as co-anchor on 'ET'

O’Dell will join the syndicated entertainment show as a special correspondent and substitute co-anchor beginning in January 2011 and will assume the role of co-anchor after Mary Hart ends her final season on the show.  Mark Steines is also a co-anchor.

Hart, who joined ET in 1982, announced in August 2010 that this will be her final season. “I remember watching Entertainment Tonight when it first premiered and dreaming about working for the show someday!” O’Dell said in a statement. “It is the original and the gold standard of entertainment news shows. Needless to say, I am thrilled that my dream has come true. I have greatly admired the show and the incomparable and esteemed Mary Hart – her quiet power and professionalism are beyond admirable. I am honored to be the one chosen to fill a TV legend’s seat and I hope I can ‘do her proud!’”

Entertainment Tonight is produced and distributed by CBS Television Distribution and is taped in Studio City, Calif.

Earlier today, Fox announced that O’Dell will host Fox’s New Year’s Eve Live on Friday, Dec. 31 from 11 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. live ET.

Wow. Guess Samantha Harris is bummed.

  • Sara

Good. I like O’Dell. Probably still won’t watch the show…but good for her.

      I think Nancy O’Dell is a good choice for host. My only criticisms of her are as follows;

      - Her spray-tan is too dark. I feel that she’ll connect with the audience better by appearing less fake.

      - Her hair is very pretty, but is often a distraction during interviews, etc. It shouldn’t ever be hiding her face, but that happens often. She is a beautiful woman and needs a more professional hair-do that doesn’t get in the way.

      - Nancy seems very preoccupied with her appearance, which only draws more attention to the inappropriate tan and hair. Even if she doesn’t change those two things, she needs to work on projecting confidence. She should trust in the fact that she’s a gorgeous woman with a whole team of people to make her look good… and tossing her hair or hiding behind it is not something the host of ET should be doing.

So she leaves Access Hollywood because of the scandalous way the show was going..ummm..has she seen ET lately…that is the reason Mary hart is leaving…Guess Nancy realized the grass isn’t always greener. On the bright side..she won’t have to sit next to Billy Bush anymore.

i agree – she has lost all credibility with me. ET is the most tabloid of all the shows. i tend to watch AH about 90percent of the time. I find it the best produced, least tabloidy show with hosts that dont constantly grate on my nerves. Nancy must have gotten a great $$ offer from ET which just shows everyone has its price. I do feel bad for the other ET employees who have put in their dues hoping to get a shot , and CBS slaps them in the face and hires an outsider. Samantha Harris shouldve stayed on DWTS – Id think the #1 primetime show -w hich was an easy gig – would be more profitable than ET – and give you more time with your family.

I couldn’t agree more, I was going to post the same thing. She has taken a big step down as far as I was concerned. I was glad when she left Access Hollywood because it was becoming to tabloidy, and now she’s going to ET? I saw that show the other night and I was disgusted by it. Big Mistake Nancy!!

  • Jess

I surprised! When Nancy left Access, I assumed it was because she wanted to do something different. I guess ET gave her an offer she just couldn’t refuse. Good 4 her. (It might be weird to go up against her old pals, though. Whatevs.)

  • Lorie

Good for her. I like her more than Samantha Harris.

Lara over at the Insider must be raging right now. Dancing with the stars time?

  • DN

How much of an (expletive) was Billy Bush, since O’Dell didn’t retire when she left Access Hollywood? It sure looked like retirement for Nancy but it wasn’t. Bush must be a (expletive).

I’m astonished people watch these shows. Informercials hosted by unbearable car salesmen. When I think of a lifetime of Entertainment Weekly shows, the only sensation I experience is nausea.

  • She dreamed about working for E.T. someday

    That’s really, really sad.

    • Zach

Oh, shut it. All you do is post on an EW.com website.

      • She dreamed about working for E.T. someday

You’re right, I’m sorry. All I do is post on EW.com giving useless commentary about celebrity’s personal lives. I’m sure the useless commentary she gives is of a much different and more complex nature then mine. I suppose she should be commended for finding someone stupid enough to pay her for what the rest of us will do for free. So . . . Way to aim high Luce! You’ve finally achieved your dream of being a glorified internet poster!

  • Tammy

Well, this is good news indeed! I’m so ready for Mary Hart to retire, and Samantha grates my very last nerve. Her maternity leave can’t come soon enough. I thought I had read a while back that Lara Spencer was moving to ET, but, I am SOOOO relieved she’s not! I can’t stand listening to her and looking at her teeth/mouth and nose. I always liked Mary Hart, but she had gotten way too self-important. But, I do agree with many other posters that ET has now become one of the more tabliod-type entertainment shows. It really did use to be a good quality show. Hopefully Nancy will help bring back a little of the class.

lets start with the big one that the banksters are gittteng away with. Getting loans from the fed for 0% interest. Anyone think you could make some money on a deal like that.

  • Zach

    Now where’s Jules Asner?

  • Harold X

I thought Lara Spencer was going to take over for Mary Hart. This is all so confusing — glad it makes no difference whatsoever.

  • rmb

No one else has problems with Nancy O’Dell after her horrible dress choice sank Austin Scarlett in season 1 of project runway?! Just reading her name brings back the pain. From then on, she was dead to me.

  • Devin

Love O’Dell. Hate ET. It’s one of the most shallow shows. “Let’s take 10 minutes to analyze a pictures of so and so buying a purse”. “Let’s act like people care what somebody famous is wearing while she jogs.” Worthless show.

  • cici217

I would have loved to have seen Lara taking over the role. To me, Nancy always comes across as egotistic and wooden in her appearances.
