‘Glee’ scoop: New Directions and Mr. Schuester to fight back against Kurt’s bully

Last night’s episode of Glee was undoubtedly one of the series’ most emotional hours to date with Kurt standing up to his homophobic bully, football player Karofsky. Many viewers, including my colleague Mandi Bierly, seemed upset that none of Kurt’s classmates or McKinley High staffers came to his aid. Well, Gleeks, that will soon change: a Glee source tells EW exclusively that, in the episode airing on Nov. 23, one of the New Directions kids will come to the defense of Kurt–and will get beat up in the process. Adds the source, “Mr. Schu gets involved when he sees something done to Kurt and realizes he must take action. The episode is really about the repercussions for others…how people react to bullying when they are not the ones getting bullied.” Hopefully, this info will allow all you Gleeks to sleep a little better tonight.

    Oh, hooray. Another Kurt-centric episode.

    • Donna

      Works for me!

      • Faith

        Ditto! I love Kurt-centric episodes.

    • RK

      Oh, hooray. Another Glee-centric article.

      • Daryl

Works for me too! Kurt’s episodes have been the best ones so far this season. Very touching and about a relevent and VERY current subject matter.

      • Gleek

I counted only 6 GLEE-related articles in the past 24 hours. Is EW turning against GLEE? Has it [sob] found another show?

      • Danny B

Kinda like they had a new LOST article every 2 hours when LOST was still on the air?

      • Erin

And don’t forget Twilight. A few months before it premieres and a few months afterwards, EW features atleast 5 articles a day.

        Over-exposure much?

    • Mike

      I agree with your sarcasm.

    • Evelyn Sugar

Finally. Just like the first season it was all over Miss Whinealotta Divan (aka Rachel) and Mr. Blandy McBland (aka Finn)

      • Sarcastic

Oohhh, those names really cut deep.

      • HD

Good point. I like Kurt enough (but love Chris Colfer) but when is Mercedes going to get this much attention? Out of all the glee kids, she’s the one I feel like I know least about for them to exploit that voice every chance they get!

      • Cult of Personality

Mercedes? She is my least liked character and voice. Her voice is just like any other gospel singer. In fact American Idol usually has 1 or 2 of them every year. Her voice is nothing special.

    • Danny

As long as it’s not a Rachel centric episode. The last few weeks have been refreshing.

      • birv

        agreed!!!

    • Jon

Yeah! more people complaining about an article they could have avoided by not clicking on it. Morons!

      • The Jackal

        Learn the concept of feedback.

      • Anne

Jackal, websites get feedback on what types of stories their users like by analyzing the # of clicks per article. ALl you’re doing by clicking is confirming their belief that people want to read about Glee.

    • Sarah

I think somebody should also point out to Kurt that he should stop bullying Rachel!

      • j

I wouldn’t call it “bullying,” exactly, but I agree. He’s often a spiteful hateful little thing and the show seems to have a hard time separating that and his being bullied. He doesn’t deserve to be bullied, but neither does he deserve to manipulate and scheme and get no comeuppance for it because being bullied apparently makes it okay for you to do anything.

      • Liza

I agree! I mean, I wouldn’t call it “bullying,” like j above me said, but I do find it annoying that Kurt can be as mean as he pleases to Rachel and no one reprimands him, yet when people are mean to him, it’s the end of the world. I understand the seriousness of his bullying, especially in light of recent events, but Glee does seem to have become Kurt-centric lately (although it brought us Darren Criss, so…train of thought lost at mention of that beautiful boy’s name) and it always seems like it’s okay for him to pick on Rachel.

      • Eye roll

Please name the last time he’s bullied Rachel.

      • Bren

I don’t know about the last time, but his offer to give her a makeover ala Sandy in Grease was pretty mean. He did it on purpose to make her look stupid in front of Finn. However, I have to admit nothing that has happened to any of the kids in the series so far, was as difficult to watch as seeing Kurt being painfully shoved time after time into the lockers last night. The physicality of it was very jarring and I cringed every time it happened.

      • Marissa

Well, for a while, everyone was kind of mean to Rachel. And at least Kurt never sent her to a crack house.

      • Dave

I always thought of Kurt as jerk. I never really saw him as a nice person at all. The writers definitely make Kurt out to be this shining beacon of tolerance. But really, he’s just as prissy as Rachel, expect he’s mean

  • rush

i thought that was a bit wierd!!!!

  • Nan

    It’s Schue… Schuester. Schue.

    • lefty

      For real?

      • Nan

Yeah for real. If someone is going to write about a show, they should at least spell the characters names right. It’d be like if they spelled Kurt: Kirt or Curt. It’s wrong and a little irritating.

  • Hopeless Wimpy Kid

As a person who got bullied a lot in school, i’m still waiting for a show or an episode where the cruel truth of bullying is shown, the more you fight the worse it gets, if take action against the bully they will take revenge, there is no easy way out of it. That sucks, i know, but life sucks so…

    • tarc

Wow, then you werent a very smart or clever person… no one ever bullied anyone I knew more than once. *ahem* :D (And I’m not implying violence in any way.)

      • Rob

This is serious. Don’t be an a$$. Bullying can escallate and the victim is the one who loses.

      • To Tarc

And the bullying continues…even on message boards. Why did you choose to call this person names? Your solution to bullying may not be the right choice for HWK. If violence worked for your friends, then great. But bullying comes in all forms, and you just perpetuated it once again. Not cool.

      • Jon

Tarc you must have been the bully. Your comment is moronic and if you would have bullied me, I would have unleashed so much gay rage that, yes, you would have never bullied me again!

    • The Truth

Not at all true. A bully picks out an easy victim. True if the victim stands up and fights back the bully will retaliate. This is the bully intimidating the victim back into the easy prey mode. You have to stand up to the bully multiple times and make it very clear you will not make it easy for him/her. In time it will stop they will find someone else who they think is easy to pick on and the cycle continues. The key is not only standing up for yourself but doing it when they try to put you back into your place, mainly because they will lose credibility as tough guy/girl if you win.

    • Gata

Well I remember standing up to the school bully, and after that we became really good friends…

    • Troia

@Hopeless Wimpy Kid: the points you made are pretty much exactly what happened in last nights episode

    • drew

That is the funny thing that they rarely show what a really scary bully is like on TV, the kind who don’t care about consequence. I’ve seen a few, the best thing was to stay out of their way because they were in the middle of an inevitable spiral downward into jail. Bully’s are people, sometimes they back off and sometimes they just escalate.

    • JoshP

Here Here, Mr. Schu has to stop comming to Kurts Rescue. There are kids who don’t get any and have to protect themselves

      • ttete

The best thing to do with a bully is to ignore them unless they are physical. Girls would bully me at school and I will be like “Did somebody say something?” They stopped after a few time. I’m not sure if it works against boys though.

      • Veronica

I think there’s no known key to stop bullying in shcools, I tried myself when I was in high school and it wasn’t easy to stop. I tried ignoring, I tried standing the bully , I tried talking to the teachers and nothing seemed to work. I think the only way to stop bullying is by education from parents, we have to raise our kids teaching them to respect each other, that’s the only way.
Anyway, kids, don’t give up, you’re not alone and it will pass sooner than later.

  • sparkle the gym bag

    puck can whip their butt!

  • Nicolle

Would love it if they were all about Kurt. Chris Colfer is amazing.

    • Jack

He’s so amazing that the focus on him is quickly running this show into the ground. It’s terrible this season.

      • joblo

Truly. Bullying sucks, regardless of why one is bullied. But this season is losing all its charm as it becomes totally Kurt-tastic. It’s out of control. I started watching for the music and now it feels like it’s a continuous After School Special.!

      • Turtle

He’s been the lead in two episodes, all of which have also had strong subplots. He’s barely been in some of the other episodes. Get over it.

  • K8

Seriously another Kurt episode, I am so sick of the glee theme episodes or myopic focus on one character its a cast of many, can we please see some others too. And the music used to make sense in the episodes now its just kinda shoved in hap hazardly or because they have an artist’s catalogue, this show needs to improve and fast.

  • Kate

I am going to bet it is Sam who steps in because he at the outset is the most open minded about things and I am guessing that will make the Cheerios come firmly down on Kurt’s side as no one should mess with Quinn. And every time other football players attempt to intimidate Finn, well, Finn is like taller then them all and it looks odd. Probably too much for it to be Artie and other than Artie, who else would care if something happened to Puck.

    • Neil

Chord Overstreet was photographed with black eye makeup at one of their shoots so I would say yes, it is Sam.

  • Monty

I remember an Ask Ausello suggesting a student gets expelled. 2:1 says its the bully.

    • Mocha

Oh yeah, I’d forgotten about that! You’re probably right. Except, I dimly remember hearing that Kurt’s boyfriend was going to be a jock who came out of the closet…maybe the writers intend to bring Kurt and Karofsky together, though it seems like they would be a really contrived couple.

  • GP

didn’t this already happen in the Lady GaGa episode? Obviously it’s a touch more topical now so I can understand why they are re-visiting the issue. Both Kurt and Finn were targeted in that episode and the club came together in all their GaGa regalia and stood up to the football players. I don’t mind the episodes that have themes, but it would be nice if there was actual character development at some point. Also, there isn’t much point in watching if EW is going to report EVERYTHING in each and every upcoming episode… I can understand discussing them after the fact but my goodness, is nothing to be left a surprise?

    • Gretchen

      a) It just shows bullying doesn’t always end when someone stands up to a bully; b) if you don’t like spoilers, don’t read them.

      • a

It’s hard to not read the spoilers when it is the the title!!

  • mags

I am glad this is going to be addressed. Watching last night, I was concerned that it was continuously happening and no one (friend, teacher)was stepping in. Of course, I was NOT surprised one bit when the bully kissed Kurt. Does this mean Glee writers think “big bully” = gay? hmmmmm……

    • Yesenia

I doubt it but many times those who bully do so against others that represent something they hate about themselves.

      • Jackie

You hit the nail on the head. Karofsky’s character actually reminded me a whole lot of Larry from ‘Buffy’ seasons one and two in that respect.

  • Chris

There is no more room for surprises anymore.

  • AW

I am so sick of Kurt — I myself was openly gay/out in highschool and yes, there were people who were ignorant and terrible, but you know what I did? I started a Gay-Straight Alliance and spread the message of tolerance, I didn’t run around whining and crying all day every day like Kurt. He is quickly becoming the most annoying character on television.

    • AW

Oh, and he has the worst onscreen cry since Claire Danes.

    • Yesenia

He doesn’t do that everyday. Mr. Schue specifically said he has been acting out lately and as we saw in previous episodes he has not always been this emotional. I think his acting is powerful enough to have a lot of viewers feel for/with him- cry and all.

    • Blaaake!

yeah, nice way to show off your tolerance talents, jerk. Not everyone is the same, you syhould know that.. what with being gay and all. But like most elitists gays, you think of yourself so much better than a character on TV without regard that maybe, just maybe, that character on TV represents others who would feel and act the same way… but you, with your better than everyone else, just alienated them. Kudos to you for being such an awesome example of tolerance and acceptance! (*that was sarcasm btw – you are nothing but another self-loathing, stuck up jerk that permeates the gay community.. i’ve met many like you and you are disgusting).

      • cheese

        this!

      • Chris

And now you’ve become a bully.

      • @ Blaaake!

You’re kind of being a jerk too. Also, not sure you are proving your tolerance when you make a statement about types that permeate the gay community.

      • bg

This is wierd. It seems that gay people are just as intolerant of each other as others seem to be of them. What’s the difference?

  • Yesenia

I could see how in Artie’s attempt to help Puck be a better man Puck feels the need to stand up for Kurt then get beat up. I somehow can’t see Finn doing it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is Sam either.

  • Snsetblaze

The writing is a little unclear. Is it Kurt or the person who stands up for Kurt that gets beat up? I thought it was the former but somone else on the message board says the latter.

    • Snsetblaze

Oops, I meant that I thought it was the person who sticks up for Kurt (making me wonder if one of the females could possibly get beaten up) or Kurt himself. I guess my writing was unclear as well. Grin.

      • Stacy

I believe one of the football players on the glee team stand’s up for him. There are pictures on the net with one of the guys sporting a black eye.
