'Glee': Gwyneth Paltrow sings Cee-Lo's 'Forget You' (Exclusive Video)

Gleeks, get ready to piddle in your pants a little bit: EW has the exclusive premiere of Academy Award-winner Gwyneth Paltrow singing Cee-Lo’s “Forget You” from next Tuesday’s episode of Glee. We’ve already had a little taste of the episode with the coming attractions and yesterday’s song tease, but now EW has your first look at Paltrow’s duet with the kids from New Directions. To give you all a little context, the actress is playing Holly Holliday, a substitute teacher who fills in for a sick Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) in the episode, which is directed by series co-creator Ryan Murphy. But enough talk — I know you really just wanna watch Paltrow get her Glee on. Watch the video below, and be sure to check out Glee‘s “first listen Fridays” site, where you can check out audio from Tuesday’s episode!

    Why so sour Rachel?

    • Lisa

Maybe she’s sick of all the celebrity guest stars too?

      • gah

i think cause finn’s looking at her like she’s hot? or she’s probably mad the sub isnt doing things like mr. schue

      • BlackIrish4094

        Nice and I totally agree!

      • newman

        @ angle

        lol

      • ann

I think she’s annoyed with both the guest stars and the fact that the sub is signing a lame version of a song that should only ever be performed as “f*ck you.” I love me some Glee and I love me some Cee-Lo, but I don’t love me some radio edit crap version of a song on Glee.

      • sophie

        hilarious

      • Haha

Angle actually thinks someone will look at the website (s)he spammed. LOL

    • Caiti

I think Finn is enthralled with a certain Ms. Paltrow.

      • Lisa

OMG, Finn kinda loves Holly! LMFAO!

      • Lisa

Hahahahaha, a while ago, Cory said in an interview that his favorite chick flick was Sliding Doors! Finn is in love with the new sub! LOL

      • Steve

        How can you not be?!

    • dusen

      Maybe she’s sick of AutoTune.

      • mawhi

        Agreed.

      • nylagal

AMEN!! Jeeze, it’s getting so old.

      • Hailey

Oh, come on now. If she didn’t have auto-tune, then people would realize that she can’t sing for crap.

      • GeronimoJackson

@Hailey: You obviously have never heard Lea Michele sing anywhere aside from on Glee. She is the most talented of the entire cast and is auto-tuned less than anyone else. My problem with the auto-tune is that they use it when it is completely unnecessary like last week during teenage dream. The guy who played Blaine — don’t hate me for forgetting his name — has a great voice and they turned up the auto tune during a big note at the end where he didn’t need the help and it ruined the whole thing for me. The more they use the auto-tune the more people like Hailey are going to underestimate the true talent of the cast.

      • Aly

So true. Guests who can actually sing > guests with star power any day of the week.

      • kiairbear

the autotune is getting really old and lea can sing she doesnt need auto tune

      • miss k

        @Haily:
Considering she was the lead on a Tony award winning Broadway production, I’d say she can sing. Just saying.

      • sv

Just enjoy the singing and the tunes, they all can sing some maybe better than others if you only realize how much rehursing and singing they do day after day for this show you would understand the need to help save their vocals whenever necessary, they may not always have the proper time to warm up their vocals which can result in serious damage. You should have respect for all the hard work that goes into it. If your going to criticize watch something else.

      • scyren

Actually they auto tune Lea alot. I am too sick of them overusing it.

      • erin

lol they auto tuned the *@#$ out of her voice

      • Lara

        I know I am!

      • fathertime33

they need to start the whole show over again.

      • Tarc

I’ve heard Lea sing live at least a dozen times, and if there is a human on Earth that doesn’t need any voice correction, it’s Lea Michelle.

      • blahblahblah

to Geronimo jackson:”My problem with the auto-tune is that they use it when it is completely unnecessary like last week during teenage dream. The guy who played Blaine — don’t hate me for forgetting his name — has a great voice and they turned up the auto tune during a big note at the end where he didn’t need the help and it ruined the whole thing for me”

it wasn’t even the actor who plays blaine singing its the tufts beelzebubs– possibly one of the greatest acapella groups ever. if you’re going to start throwing auto tune insults around make sure you’ve got your facts straight

      • Mike

It was blaine singing. The Beelzebubs only did the support. If you’re going to start throwing insults at people make sure *you’ve* got your facts straight.

      • Jello

How does she sound jus like Cee Lo noone does hes one of a kind likk wtf

      • erin

Actually, Gwenyth Paltrow’s a great singer, which most people don’t know or expect. Love her or not, I doubt she was auto-tuned – she wouldn’t need to be.

    • tracy bluth

Because the writers have made her such a flat character that her only personality trait has become “hates it if anyone else sings besides her ever”.

      • g

        YES!! I completely agree, Tracy!!

The characters are all written as so flat and one dimensional that it seems like the writers can’t do anything with them! The characters never change and each episode feels the same. I gave up on the show 2 weeks ago for this very reason.

      • Amy

Thanks, Tracy! I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m beginning to get so frustrated about watching this show and you hit the nail on the head with that comment! I’m getting really sick of Rachel’s flat personality. It was funny (sometimes) in the first season, but now it’s just old and the attempts they’ve shown in the season so far about her trying to not be so selfish have been weak and fallen flat, and she becomes stuck-up again.

      • ALM

Chiming in with all three of you. I’ve quit watching for the “plot”, and tune in only to see the musical numbers (and Sue’s rants).

      • maiv

Agreed! I’ve gotten so tired of her character, which sucks b/c I’m a Lea fan.

      • T.C.

Glee is the only show I can think of where the characters started out with nuance and layers, only to morph into flat stereotypical cartoons. It happened in the Sex and the City movies, but not during the show. Any Rachel-centric episode (as I’m afraid this one will be)is not a good one anymore. Her Tracy Flick persona has grown irritating and I’m hoping that she adds some more layers to Rachel soon because it’s a real damper of the show. I would like to see her relegated to a background character–she’s just not interesting anymore. I’m way more interested in even Mike Chang now.

      • Jello

I dnt think shes the best singer and whats up with that face she makes wen she sings she has a voice but every thing is nt about Rachel let someone else shine D@mn

    • jimmy

I think Glee would do its self some good to keep Gwyneth around for the long run.. shes a celebrity guest star so the showrunners would still be getting their fix there but shes also very humanized and relatable. I find myself actually enjoying watching her with the glee kids. We’ve got the awesomeness that is Darren Criss, the surprisingly likable John Stamos, and now the wonderful Gwyneth Paltrow. why would you even NEED anymore guest stars?

      • Shelley

I totally Agree! I was a huge NON fan of Gwyneth until I saw her in “Duets” and have been on her team ever since.
Seeing her finally singing on tv and movies (she just sang at the CMA’s the song from her new movie Country Strong?) makes me happy.
I doubt she’ll be a new full time character but a story arc is good enough. Nice to see her on TV!

      • Tams

I Love Gwyneth she is a triple threat and as far as them auto tuning her i dont agree with that she has a beautiful voice, i think all you haters need to get a life and stop hating ppl. geeesh come on she is a great actress and is trying to expand her career !! i dont usually watch glee unless they have famous stars on so this is a big step up to have her on here Go GLEE !!!!

      • ann p

personally i prefer this version of forget you to her song ncountry strong. imo all she does with country is pretend to be sheryl crow. close you eyes and listen to country strong and youll swear its crow singing. on this song however i was suprised at how well she did.
but in no way shape or form is she a triple threat. her dancing leaves a lot to be desired and considering shes on glee where so few of them have a dance background it shows out even more.

      • Marcy

Well, I’d still like to see Kristen Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Charice and Neal Patrick Harris come back. Other than that you’re right.

      • trublue

All the movies I’ve seen of Gywneth paltrow had really dry roles for her, even the Iron Man and its sequel. Gwyneth in Gless is quite a revelation, quite refreshing, and made me genuinely like her.

      • Jello

Well shes like the-mother-goose everyone wants its live live you can watch but picture yourself there like when she told Rachel she sucked why didnt she jus slap here because i think she needs it and whats up with the way she dresses its gettin old she isnt so innocent

    • hal

It’s because her boyfriend is dancing with the HOT new teacher!

      So funny! LOL!

    • Megan

maybe shes afraid that she will get her spotlight stolen

      • Lizzie

I heard somewhere that the sub tells Rachel she sucks…

      • ann

Probably true Lizzie – which is funny because there’s nothing like taking a sub who looks like she’s trying to be one of the kids and then have her rag on one of said kids. Dumb.

      • Jello

        she shouldnt be the spotlight

    • mike

Cause Rachel is a horrible character anymore – GROW UP GIRL!

      • Jello

Omqz yess she think shes the ish but wudd does she no she wants everything to be her way i think she doesnt care about mr shcue she jus wants to have all of the attention

    • Kate

She’s not singing the main part of the song, duh.

    • anonymous

She was frowning before the song started. This is wild guess, but I wonder if she had fantasies of getting to lead the class herself and then the substitute showed up and did something totally opposite.

    • monnleo

Honestly I’m sick of watching Rachel get always so obsessed with herself and that she HAS to be the best singer, when she is obviously not. She was like this against Sunshine (Charice) and now she is acting like that again against Gwyneth, who IMO, she should be giving some respect to as one the biggest, oldest well known names of Hollywood.
Couldn’t the writers of Glee shed a more positive light on Rachel’s behaviour?

      • Jon

Ok, you DO realize that this is a TV show, and that “Rachel” doesn’t really hate Gweneth Paltrow, right? On the show, Paltrow’s character is not a famous Hollywood star that deserves “respect”. (And who says people from Hollywood deserve respect anyway?)

    • Belles

Rachel is probably sour because it’s part of the script people.. Geesh it’s a show.

      • T.C.

Yes, but she could make being “sour” a little more interesting. She could show some fear or desperation or sadness–something, anything other than the same old puss face every episode. Her acting is one note and people are getting bored with it. It wasn’t this bad in the first season. Has the actress gotten complacent and lazy? Maybe too much of her focus is spent on losing the weight that she never needed to lose. I don’t know, I’m just grasping at straws, but something is really wrong. I much prefer the shows that focus on any of the other characters.

    • George Hale

Anything that upsets Rachel is okay by me. Maybe it’ll be enough for her to leave and she can be replaced by someone with talent.

      • smilies

        lls i love that

    • Tarc

Plot. Gwyneth and Lea later do a duet on Nowadays_Hot Honey Rag (both of Chicago) in the same episode (in the show, the leads are frenemies of the first order). It’s *awesome*. Matthew also does one of my favorite movie musical numbers EVER – Make ‘Em Laugh.

    • ann p

i think shes pretending to be mad cause she hates to lose the spotlight just like when she freaked when charice tried to get in the glee club. did you guys forget that so soon?

      • smilies

she was way better than rachel bt u dnt c Lea in as much as Charice

    • Marcy

      It’s the bangs.

    • Samantha

Rachel is just jealous of the sub. Gwyneths voice is better than Lea’s so shes jealous. LMFAO

    • smilies

because she doesnt get the attention at home that she gets from school

  • sarah

    LOVE it!
What did she say at the end? I can’t make it out.

    • kat

I don’t know the context, but I think she’s saying “Let’s go get some tacos.”

      • gah

yeah i hear “lets go get some tacos!”

    • brandon

I think she says “let’s go get some tacos” (Though without the context of the episode it’s hard to know)

      • Rosie

It is. It’s a plug for Jack in the box, free taco tuesday.

    • Denise

I think she says, “Let’s get some Pop on” The kids generally do older music she was bring Top 40 to them to sing. Which would also be why Broadway baby Rachel seemed so upset. Just a guess.

      • T

@ Denise….no….she said “Let’s go get some tacos.”

    • Jane

I thought she was speaking spanish, and uses the word like zapatos…is that shoes? what do you think of those kicks in spanish?

    • Don

Earlier in the segment, she proposes a “Taco Bell” run for the class activity, since she was apparently out of medical-grade marijuana.

  • Chichi

YES!!! That was just as awful as I thought it was going to be!

    • HD

Indeed it was but they did look like they were having fun so I’m not going to hate.

      • Kristina

I’m a HUGE fan of “Glee,” but this was terrible. Oh Gwyneth, stop trying so hard.

      • WTF?

I think her character IS trying hard. She’s a substitute teacher trying to gain cred with the likes of Rachel and Santana, the most judgemental teenagers on Earth. Gwyneth is just letting her light shine; don’t hate!

    • lieslb

Hate it! She sounds so nasal.

    • Mel

I didn’t think it was bad at all. It was a fun number.

    • Ralph

Your critique is meaningless because it doesn’t say why it was horrible. I for one thought the vocals were fantastic, the energy was great and the performances were all around well done. I don’t watch this show but I really enjoyed this clip.

  • Mimi

    Love, love, love it!!!!!!

  • Kevin

Wow, Gwyneth is looking HOT! That said, that was unbearable… why do people like this show?

    • CJ

      Because not everyone is you.

    • brandon

The audio was enjoyable enough, but I thought she looked a bit awkward trying to bob and sway to the music.

      • KC

I agree, she is a horrible performer! She has a good voice, and I can understand she was a little nervous at the CMAs but this just proves it…she can’t dance!!!

      • anya

Totally agree. I was really surprised by how good her voice was but lady can’t dance. Did you see that akward robot thing she tried to pull? And I don’t think it was terrible on purpose.

    • Zach

Wow, I wish I had enough spare time to watch a show I clearly don’t like, search out internet blogs to read on that show, AND comment my displeasure on the show AND the bloggers… My life would feel so much more fulfilled…

      • Jenn

I for one watched because I heart Gwyneth and don’t understand this show. Still love Gwyneth. Still don’t get the Glee appeal.

And yes. I do need to get off the internet. It’s draining me of life force – thanks for the reminder!

      • Hailey

Jenn- the primary appeal of Glee is that most people can identify very deeply with at least one of the characters. They also tackle subjects that most shows wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. The music is the very least thing about it.

      • Dani

Zach, i totally agree with you. i really don’t understand why people comment just to hate….i mean do you seriously have nothing else better to do?

      • Alicia

So much word Zach. The haters have nothing better in their sad, pathetic lives then to post their spiteful remarks because that’s the only way they can feel better about themselves.

I think she looks and sounds fantastic!

      • Mel

        HAHAHAHAHAHA…..thank you!

      • scyren

Well Hailey. I don’t identify with any of the characters. I watch for the music and witty dialog.

      • T.C.

We criticize because we like the show, but see it slipping. The acting and plot/character development have become frustratingly stagnant because too much focus is on gimmicky themes and guest appearances. We just want it to be better, the way it started out to be. And BTW, wouldn’t message boards be pretty boring if everyone only had positive comments? I agree that abusive comments are not warranted, but come on, you really can’t tolerate a little criticism of a show that you don’t even work on?

      • Tarc

        This. Squared.

      • Sue

Thank you! I really don’t understand what all the negativity is about. If you don’t like the show, change the channel. If the creators of the show tried to please everyone…well, it’s obvious that that’s just not possible.

    • BeeCox

      Forget you

  • Shelly

She sings better than 99% of the poptarts we hear on the radio….Go Gwyneth!

    • kahuna

She has a nice quality to her voice.

    • Lyn

@Shelly: Agree! Just rewatched “Proof” and was reminded of her acting talent; now this week there’s ample proof that she can sing, too.

      • Aly

She also sang in the movie Duets.

      • Heidi

and she’s an amazing cook – the gal is a triple threat!

      • Joey

and she gives amazing blow jobs

    • wino

thats not saying much…she’s good by default? wth

      • unknown

dont hate cee lo hes got an amazing career and i love this song!!!

    • MrPop

      Auto-tune !

    • scyren

Eh….she has no flava. She’s pretty boring as a singer. Sorry…

  • Perkle

Why do people who claim to not like the show watch it and then feel the need to comment on it. Not have anything better to do with your time. I liked it.

  • Nick

As someone who liked Glee through the first half of the first season then gave up, I watched last week because Darren’s version of Teenage Dream was so good. It turned out to be the best part of the episode… Looks like, it’ll be two in a row for the “leaked” songs.

  • Karen

I was pleasently surprised by Mrs. Palthrow. Really loved this:-) Can’t wait to see Rachel Berry vs. Gwyneth

  • Dorkophile

I think that what Gwyneth is lacking in her vocals, she and the rest of the group DEFINITELY made up for with their enthusiasm and they totally sold it. I mean I really did love this entire thing and it felt like so much fun; I wanted to be there! Dance party! I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS EPISODE!!!

    • hal

Yup, the energetic group dancing made up for the lackluster vocals. I love the ND kids, Finn, Puck, Kurt, the Cheerio girls! Mercedes and Artie! And Rachel, cheer up girl! LOL!

      • Lizzie

GP tells rachel she sucks…are teachers supposed to do that

    • Ralph

Lacking in vocals? I’m a singer and I thought her vocals were spot on and quite impressive.

  • Hosuewife in the Desert

I can’t believe I am typing this. I can’t stand Gwenyth Paltrow, but…I totally dug it. And seeing Rachel all jealous? Priceless…Ryan Murphy is a genius.

    • Shelley

I felt the same ’til I saw her in Duets. Check it out. Great cast and really cute.

    • DiMi

I can’t stand her either, but I remember from DUETS that she has a great voice. She’s a bad person with a good voice, just like Lea Michelle.

  • Rebecca

LOVE this song! Gwyneth rocked it out! Also, I would love to know where her skirt is from! It’s adorable! :-)

    • Emily

      Agreed! SUPER cute skirt!

    • she

has anyone found out where the skirt is from???

  • KarlHall

Hmmm… The “WHY?!” was awkward… she doesnt have the Cee Lo chops, and that’s a distinct Cee Lo vocal.

    • Woot

Also the song is so censored it’s almost unrecognizable.

      • GleeFan84

What? That’s a ridiculous criticism – all they did was replace and/or omit the curse words. How does that render the song “almost unrecognizable”? It’s 99% the same.

      • ann

No it’s not GleeFan84 – it’s terrible! I don’t understand the need to take a song and make it “radio friendly.” If a person doesn’t approve of the original lyrics – they shouldn’t listen to it. The artist should also not re-record it, but they’re all in it for the money so that’s not likely.

      • Tarc

It’s clear you don’t understand a great deal, Ann.

    • Ralph

She did the official radio edit version that Cee Lo Green himself recorded for radio so, I’m not sure what your point is.

      • JR

        Got ‘em there, Ralph.

    • Tarc

Cee-lo and Bruno Mars wrote a *fantastic* song, but I have to say, I like the female (and edited) version better. The original is more a spherical, not terribly attractive, broke black guy whining about not getting the hottest girl around (go figure). The Glee version is much more positive and it lets the AMAZING (positive, energetic) music shine through. And eliminating the shock factor in the lyrics lets the rest of the lyric shine through better.

      • ann

        Oooh – it’s “positive.” Gag.

      • Tarc

Well aren’t you a bundle of joy, Ann! When you deal with the real world all day, it’s nice not to have to listen to negative cr_p for fun. But, hey, a lot of people live in Fantasyland all day, so they think negative or ‘edgy’ is cool. You’re welcome to it.

  • tara

errrrr…. wanted to like that, since I love her voice, but… yeah. Her stringy hair and awkward dance moves (that are so not on par with everyone else on this show), were very distracting to me. Sorry fishsticks.

    • Amy

Yeah, you’d think by how “popular” this show has become they could afford a decent hair stylist. Her hair was annoying me, too!

      • mscisluv

Thank you, yes – her hair looks terrible! Very strange that no one on set noticed that.

      • Stephanie

Umm, do you think maybe that was on purpose? She is, after all, playing a normal substitute teacher and not herself on this show. I for one like that her hair is not perfect, just shows that she is a human being.

      • Tarc

Looked great to me. Totally appropriate for an American woman of her age.

    • J

Nitpick much? Oh that’s right — this is what has become of many of the postings for Glee — complete and utter inane commentary.

  • nishka19

Didn’t expect it but kinda loving G. Paltrow. Duets taught me she could sing, but just the energy of this performance was so fun and up, now I’m officially excited for Tuesday.
