'My Life on the D List' exclusive: 'I don't think it will come back,' says Kathy Griffin

kathy-griffinImage Credit: Janet Van Ham/BravoSay it ain’t so, Kathy Griffin! While attending the Burlesque premiere this week, the comedienne told EW exclusively that she’s not sure My Life on the D List, the Bravo show that earned her some Emmy love, will return for a seventh season.

“I don’t think it will come back, especially not as the same show it was,” Griffin said. “I would love to do a hybrid show, like a half-scripted kind of thing or something based on what I built on My Life on the D List and what I experience, but not a full-on reality show. I need to maybe give my mom a break so she doesn’t have to drink quite as much boxed wine. I could have someone play my mom because she’s a legend at this point.

“I do feel like it is a natural progression to take all the wacky things that happen to me,” Griffin added. “But [some things] can’t be on a reality show because of legal issues and clearances. I think it could be even funnier because it is still real [if there was] nothing that was off limits.”
A Bravo spokeswoman would only say that the cable network has yet to make a decision about another season of D List. Until then, Griffin says she’s keeping busy. “I am still doing my stand-up. I have some dates in L.A. coming up. I also recently hosted one of those VH1 diva specials. I did the one for the troops.”
My Life on the D List first premiered in 2005. The show was honored as an outstanding reality program by the Emmys in 2007 and 2008. (With reporting from Carrie Bell)

Look, I LOVE Kathy Griffin. I think she’s smart, sweet and hilarious. But the last season of her show was really bad. Everything was contrived (didn’t feel like it was really “happening to her”, more like she made it happen) and despite some rare genuine moments, it was boring to watch.
Even her jokes are getting old and so redundant — how many times are we going to laugh about her mom’s boxed wine? Levi Johnston? Her “bangin’ bikini bod”? It’s just not laugh out loud funny like it used to be. her commentary seemed so planned. When it’s not, those little snide comments she makes are genius.
Sorry Kathy I love you :(

Hate to agree with you Sara, but Kathy’s act has gotten a bit stale.

    • Dallas

      Totally agree. Dim the lights.

    • Laura

Yes, I agree. I stopped watching because the situations felt forced. Especially all her celebrity “friends”…ugh. And enough with the mom and boxed wine jokes. I love her stand-up,though and her fights with people like Elizabeth from the View.

Totally agree. Weakest season by far. but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Kathy!!!! My all time favourite!

I think that talking about D-list celebrities (mediocre to bad celebrities struggling to find acting work) are passe and people want to return to the A-list celebrities in TV and movies. Talking about them is tiresome and people want to take the high road now.

I read Kathy Griffin’s “memoir” and LOVED it! (…hangs head in shame…)

    • Chaz

No shame in liking that book, Stephanie. It’s a real book, and it’s good.

Will miss the D-List show if it doesn’t come back, but for sure we haven’t heard the last from Kathy.

I listened to the audiobook of Kathy’s memoir and was in heaven. It was like a HUGE stand-up act spread out on 7 CD’s. Highly recommended!

      • aleksa

I listened to it, too; it was hysterical.

I adored this book, and I adore kathy!!! Not remotely ashamed, either. I agree that this last season was a bit stale, though I did love the Little Girls Beauty Pageant episode. I also think she truly DOES need to give her mother a break…she’s so game for everything, but she needs to start taking it easy at some point. It’s clear that kathy is sooooo devoted to her mom, all jokes aside – which is another thing I love about her. I wish her even greater success and think she really REALLY deserves it!

I really enjoyed it. She is a really good person and what a hard worker. I hope she finds anotehr vehicle that makes us laugh.

I’m a fan. Sorry. I love the outrageousness of Katy Griffin. She’s funny and to be fair, this past season – with the onscreen Pap Smear, her march on Washington, etc. – she really showed us she’s more than a funny line. I like the show and will be disappointed if it doesn’t come back.

This is a bummer. I love Kathy Griffin and her show!

Although I love Kathy and her show, we all have to admit now that she really isn’t “D-List” anymore (she made her anouncement at the Hollywood Burlesque premere, afterall) Although she isn’t quite “A-List” yet, part of the humor and charm of her earlier seasons was how she worked so hard to claw her way into higher recognition in the entertainment scene. Half of the fun was her dealing with how very few people knew who she was and worked any job offered to her to get more recognition.

I’m curious: What kind of ratings does the show get? Does she get a million viewers a week? If so, that’s pretty good!

    • CiCi217

If I remember correctly, only the first ep of the season might have broken the Million viewer number with the rest hovering 700k-900k or something like that. When I saw that, I thought uh-oh this isn’t going to last long. It used to be a good number for Bravo, but since they have seen huge success with the Housewives franchise Kathy is no longer an asset for them.

Too bad. Loved the previous season when she met up with all those A-listers like Better Midler, Suzanne Somers etc, but this last season was sort of meh. Couldn’t even bare to watch the one with Levi. ick

      • paul

*Bette Midler (one of my favorite episodes btw)

    • CiCi217

Here’s an example of her ratings from 2010. Down quite a bit from her previous 1M+ numbers….

‘Kathy Griffin: Life on the D-List’ is down to 720,000

      • Karl

On the DList wiki page it says Season 5 scored a million on its premiere.

  • DavidSask

Love Kathy so much, wish she would tour Saskatchewan Canada! I think she is right though that the show should move on. I hope her new endeavors with Bravo or whomever come to TV fast and keep us laughing hard.

  • claudenorth

Her show has definitely grown more contrived (or contrived-seeming) in recent seasons, to the point that I stopped watching. The free cinnamon rolls in the hotel incident was a turning point for me. She needs to reinvent herself at this point in her career.

    • me

Right! And the “frat boys” having a loud party in a tiny room with one fifth… ugh. Sure.

  • tara

one of my all time favorite bits from d-list was when she hosted the oscars for e, came home and looked online to find herself on the worst dressed list and she was still wearing the dress! things like that made the show- and since her assistant left it really hasn’t been the same. still love her (& her mom) though and hopes she does something else on bravo.

    • cici217

I remember that one. That was hilarious!

    • Karl

OMG yeah I rmb that!! she was sitting down at her computer surfing the tabloids to see if there were reviews on her hosting… and she found herself wearing one of the Worst Dresses.

      I could NOT stop laughing.

  • KT

I would love to see a scripted show based on all the “off the record” stuff we weren’t allowed to see on the D List. Especially if Kathy was the star. Love her. Good luck to her! (And Maggie!)

  • tracy bluth

  • jenny

I absolutely love her and her cast of characters around her. I miss it how it used to be a few seasons ago, but I still love her, her outrageous personality and the completely off-beat things that come out of her mouth!

  • Miffy

Every time that ugly thing opens its mouth, I want to reach through the TV, put my hands around its neck, and squeeze and squeeze and squeeze until its eyes pop out and it can’t talk any more.

    • Jimmy Fallon

      Umm.. okay Phil Spector.

    • T

I think Miffy needs to seek some help for anger management. Why would you click on an item to read and comment if you hate the person?? Seek help!

  • jj

I love Kathy and will miss her show. I agree some of the more contrived bits didn’t always work, but sometimes they did. When she and Maggie judged the child’s beauty pageant!! As Kathy would say, you can’t write that ****!
