Angela Bassett to star in ABC cop drama

Angela-BassettImage Credit: Jamie McCarthy/WireImage.comAngela Bassett will topline the ABC pilot One Police Plaza, Variety reports. She’ll play the first female New York police commissioner. (Perhaps she inherited the job from Blue Bloods‘ Tom Selleck?) Should the series — exec produced by Criminal Minds‘ Mark Gordon, Deborah Spera, and the pilot’s writers, crime novelist Linda Fairstein (the Alex Cooper mysteries) and Ken Solarz (who’s penned episodes of CSI: NY, Profiler, and Miami Vice) — make it to air, it will be Bassett’s first series gig since ER. (We don’t count her voicing Michelle Obama on an episode of The Simpsons earlier this year.) ABC likes putting women in power: Geena Davis was the first female president of the United States in the one-season wonder, Commander in Chief.

Didn’t care about this pilot until now. She’s an amazing actress and I hope the show gets picked up!

FINALLY a network will utilize one of the most electrifying actors to hit any screen in years. The day you upstage Angela Bassett in a scene will be the day Hell freezes over. Congrats and consider me already setting my DVR.

  • RM

Another cop show!?! Lazy Hollywood. :-(

  • Michael

I like Angela Bassett. She is a great role model, and it is nice to see her follow in her husband’s shadow whom has done a few cop shows on his own.

  • nm

Finally! She is such an AWESOME actress and should be great for her career – much like it did for Kyra Sedgwick on the ‘The Closer’.
I cannot wait to see this!!

  • TT

I WILL be watching…love Angela Bassett!!!

  • Snsetblaze

Its nice to see her headlining she was one of my top two choices for Michonne on The Walking Dead (Gina Flores being the other one).

  • Beanie

Did a little dance when I heard this news. I’m beyond ready to see Angela Bassett take on her own show! I’m already a loyal viewer.

  • Danny

I thought Sissy Spacek was headlining a new cop drama as well. Bring on the intelligent, superior women! Television needs more Glenn Closes and Geena Davises.

  • Terry

Good to see her working, but wish they’d find her something to do in movies. She should have had a much larger career(actually she should have had Halle Berry’s career, oscar and all).

    • Brie

That’s not too far from the truth, Terry. Angela turned down the role of Storm in X-Men (something that seemed tailor made for her) and Monster’s Ball, both of which went to Halle Berry.

That said, I’ll watch anything she’s in. Angela is a brilliant actress, one of the finest in our generation.

    • Just Me

I agree. She has amazing talent. She has a movie coming out soon, but its a bubblegum and predictable romcom/war of families type movie.

Anyway I will definately give this a chance.

  • Dee Jones

This is great news! I think Angela is one of the GREATEST ACTRESSES! and deserves much more than what she`s getting. I watch her read the phone book! I only hope one day she win an Oscar.

  • Jackie

Good for her! Although if this does get picked up, I guess I can kiss my wish of seeing her play Susannah in the ‘Dark Tower’ movies and/or TV series goodbye.

  • Justin

I’m very happy for her. Very talented actress!!

  • karin

the chicago code on the same idea sounds way better..
    ABC is “copying” Fox!
and Shawn Ryan is the king of cop show

  • Matt2

Sounds intriguing. Hope it is a well made series.
