'American Music Awards' take a ratings hit; football sucks some color out of Fox's Animation Domination

Sunday was a great night of TV for viewers but it was NFL football, not the American Music Awards, that folks flocked to the most. More than 17 million viewers tuned into NBC to watch divisional rivals, the Giants and the Eagles, play for first place in the NFC East. Besides total viewers, the network also won the night among adults 18-49 (6.6 rating/16 share), as well as in the adults 25-54 and male demos, according to preliminary results.

ABC was second in the demo (3.7/9) but third for the night in viewers (10.7 million), after the 38th Annual American Music Awards (4.3/11) dropped 22 percent from last year and earned its lowest-rated telecast ever. The show averaged 11.6 million viewers. Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million people.

CBS was third for the night in the demographic (3.4/8) but second in viewers (13.5 million), thanks to an NFL overrun that pushed into primetime and threw off the show starts. For example, the combination of The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss earned a 3.3/7 and 11.8 million viewers, while Boss and CSI: Miami scored a 2.4/6 and 11.0 million. Fox came in fourth in the demo (2.5/6) and 5.4 million, with all of its animated shows taking a dive because of the heavy competition. The net’s most-watched show was Family Guy (3.3/7, 6.5 million).

      yo mama

  • Rolo Tomasi

American Dad is the funniest show of the Fox’s Animation Domination.

    • Chris

I disagree. The funniest show would be The Simpsons followed by American Dad.

      • And I disagree. For me, it goes Cleveland Show > Family Guy > The Simpsons > American Dad.

      • sakuguwia

for me its yo mama first

    • Amanda Banana

I admit that I love American Dad (oh the shame) but The Cleveland show is getting a lot more laughs out of me these days.

      • Rolo Tomasi

The Cleveland Show is becoming too much like Family Guy, it now is doing the flashback joke

  • Andrew

There was little promotion for the American Music Awards. I think that was why it had an all-time low.

    • Rolo Tomasi

I had no idea it was on

      • You must never watch ABC. They ran promos constantly.

    • DJ

They were pimping their show like crazy all month long. Tons of commercials.

  • Victoria

    The show sucked.

  • Bibi

Why would anyone want to watch music awards when the music being put out today is all from a bunch of no talents.

    • sakuguwia

      because your a cracker

Justin Bieber won the artist of the year. That pretty much sums up why it wasn’t watched by a ton of people. The AMA’s are good for a couple good performances, but that is about it. The fact that Bieber won all those awards is further proof of how much it sucked this year.

  • JREED

I watch the AMA Last night and its was boring.

  • Mike

I was too busy watching “Boardwalk Empire”….I did hear that the game was pretty good!!

  • DJ

Who watched it? If you did are you over the age of 8? ABC is so stupid. They cowered and catered to little kids who have zero spending ability. Way to go ABC you lost the most important demographic of them all the 18-49 year olds. I’ll bet a lot of them were watching the E! channel last night. Thats all I saw on twitter was talk of the True Hollywood Story they had on there.

Who Directed this show…What about Quality – The American Music Awards was impossible to watch with all performances in the dark. The Lighting was so Bright on Stage that maybe looks cool in person but on camera it is a big bright glare with shadows of the performers. Never heard of a closeup? None of the performance are keepers.

  • Scooter

the AMAs should have had Adam Lambert back for a redemption performance.

  • Stacy

I was watching Adam Lambert THS on E! channel!! Pity the AMAs decided not to bring back Adam and Lady Gaga!!

  • Caitlin R

I had no idea the American Music Awards was going to be on.
