Julia Louis-Dreyfus confirmed to get political for HBO comedy pilot 'Veep'

Three weeks after news that Julia Louis-Dreyfus was in talks to return to TV with an HBO pilot, the network confirms she’s set to star in Veep. HBO describes it as, “a comedy set very near the White House. Former Senator Selina Meyer [Louis-Dreyfus] finds being Vice President of the United States is nothing like she expected and everything everyone ever warned about.” The pilot is written by Simon Blackwell and Armando Iannucci, the latter of whom will direct. Iannucci will also exec produce along with Chris Godsick and Frank Rich. Louis-Dreyfus will moonlight as a producer.

    awesome.

YAY! I LOVE Julia Louis-Dreyfus!!! I was really sad The New Adventures of Old Christine was canceled, but am looking forward to this show!

  • sam

    She is fantastic! Good luck!

  • Misha Lauenstein

It would be funny if the president never appeared in the show.

    • Karl

Oooh snap! You called it! Possible storyline: Selina’s mother comes to the White House to stay over, and starts making inappropriate “sleeping with the President” jokes!!

      Go JLD!

      • aj

The Vice President actually has his/her own house, so that wouldn’t necessarily work. Plenty of presidential jokes they could do, though, I’m sure.

    • Kind of like Steinbrenner on Seinfeld. I could see that being funny.

    • mel

      love it

  • Sean D

Brilliant! I’m so watching this. Louis-Dreyfus + the writers of In The Loop is an excellent combination.

    • jeff

the loop. not a good sign

      • Justin

“In The Loop,” the British show, not “The Loop,” the American show.

  • haqyunus

    Armando Iannuci? Be prepared for a foul-mouthed, no-holds-barred political-satirical-awesomeness

  • Saulo

I just need me some Julia NOW. I adore her but Old Christine was a mediocre show for her amazing comedic skills. Sure, she got her Emmy, but what I really wanted was for her to do something more mature (ie HBO political comedy hahaha).

    • Karl

At least she got her Emmy! It’s just like Ugly Betty was… vehicles for their leads to get Emmys!

      • Ugly Betty was a good show, so whatever.

      • Summer

Ugly Betty was an amazing show, though.

  • Kaiulani

Sounds like a total winner…might have to resubscribe to HBO again.

  • MCS

This sounds full of win. It will be interesting to see her on HBO where she can let loose

  • cameobrooch

I’ve been a fan of Julia ever since her days on SNL. A truly brilliant comedic actress.

  • Karl

ANOTHER possible storyline: Vice President of Mexico comes to discuss women’s issues with Selina and they end up bonding over their distaste for political men.

Sofia Vergara guest spot anyone? MAJOR FUNNY WOMEN GATHERING ALERT!

  • MyKosmo

I’ll watch it, the first episode anyway. Adventures of Old Christine should not have cancelled. That said, if Veep is full of leftist political propaganda I won’t watch more than than pilot. Politics is Poison to the soul.

    • Shaun

Politics is Poison to the soul.
      Agreed!

    • Lyn

Totally agree, however, at least it’s not about cops, lawyers or doctors!

  • Shaun

    I LOVE JL-D! I just wish I had HBO… :(

  • Jake

Great news! I loved “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” She’s hysterical.

  • Steve

I love her.. cant wait to see the show!

  • Lyn

Love her, but could not stomach more than a few minutes of “Christine.” Tired of these shows featuring the romantic “calamities” of middle-aged women who manage to look hotter than they did at 25.

    • claire

I know right? I was amazed how a show like old christine was kept on the air with no plot line, just a sexy main character like Julia to draw in male viewers. The whole show was about Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s big breasts.
