President Obama challenges MythBusters with solar weapon quest

President Obama’s guest appearance on MythBusters will air on Dec. 8, but a brief video preview is now online, showing the president welcoming the show’s two hosts, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, and challenging them to examine the scientific viability of the Archimedes ancient solar ray, which legend claims set the approaching Roman fleet on fire with only the use of mirrors. “I am a big fan of MythBusters … and so are the girls,” says Obama. “Figure this [ray] out, and report back to me.” Check out our prez geeking out with the MBs.

His flaws are many, but I love this president. Cool and smart.

A President promoting science? Let’s see how many armchair critics have a problem with that.

  • Stan

Don’t you know? The solar ray is the crux of our new anti-ballistic missle system. Cheap AND effective. Makes Halliburton craps it’s pants.

Now John Bo(eh)ner wants to see if the Death Star is a possibility.

They already did this myth…. twice. The second time, they had hundreds of M.I.T. students helping them out and all they could do was make a small blackened spot on the side of a ship. Myth = BUSTED

Can you imagine, if Sarah Palin became President, what this promo would look like? “Figure out this whole earth-goes-around-the-sun thing, and report back to me.” That is, if she doesn’t outlaw the Discovery Channel, since it’s obviously full of them academic elites.

      you sound like a fool

I was expecting “I need you to find my birth certificate.”

    • Bethany

      Hahahaha, oh if only.

  • TR

    What’s next?
I can imagine it would be something like…
“Find a way for average taxpayers to pay for all the campaign promises I made to get the votes of the poor people”.

    AWESOME!!!

If he’s really such a big fan, he’d know this myth was tested and busted twice. So he’s either a liar or an idiot.

    My money’s on both.

  • Barack Palin

I wonder if B. Hussein will bring his birth certificate. That would be a real mythbuster. Oh wait-it would show place of birth-Nairobi General Hospital. Today Obama will pardon the Thanksgiving turkey-its sad to think the turkey has more brains and would make a better president than Obama.

Obama is my President. He is actively promoting scientific pursuits by everyone. Most encouraging! Best news from the man that I have seen to date! We all have to move forward and explore the potential of our creativity. Many plaudits to President Obama.

The best scientific brains in the country gave us the theory but no way to apply it. The political solution was typical. Just double and redouble the number of beaurocrats involved and maybe some how, someway something will get done. A simple engineer can tellyou, the solution is very easy. The Greeks were very good at applied mathematics and knew the uses of the parabolic reflector similar to that used in radar antennas etc.

Great article. I can¡¯t wait to hear more about your research tool. If it is as good as your other products, then you will have another winner. Your article pretty much summed up what I have been seeing too. Great to see some hard data.
