Image Credit: Adam Larkey/ABCThough many thought (or worried) that rumors of a voting conspiracy would prove true and viewers would vote for Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol, talent ultimately triumphed and Jennifer Grey became the season 11 winner of Dancing with the Stars. Speaking with the press after the two-hour finale with a cold compress tied to her back, Grey talked about how she and partner Derek Hough “never thought of winning” and tried instead to focus on creating memorable dances.
“We collaborated so much and I think that this guy is so talented in terms of concept and execution and attention to detail,” Grey said. “He wants to make memorable dances, which is what he told me when I met him. That’s why I was so completely thrilled and blessed to get him as a partner. He’s the real deal. He gets the big picture.”
At the start of the show, Grey told host Tom Bergeron that she ruptured a disc during Monday’s performances but – as has been the case throughout the season - she was able to continue because doctors “put me back together.” ”I think it might have been one of those flips or kicks [that caused the rupture],” Grey said. “When you dance with a 25 year old, it’s a risk you take.”
But it was a risk worth taking because Grey ended up dancing with the winningest professional on the show. Tuesday’s win with Grey meant that Hough would take home his third mirror ball trophy! (Another record was broken on Tuesday: Bergeron said the show received an unprecedented number of votes from the viewing public). But Hough didn’t do much talking after the show because Grey was too busy recapping all that Stars had given her. ”The absolute destination for me was the journey in the true sense of the word,” said the 50-year-old actress. “This journey was the gift. Saying yes was the gift. Getting Derek as a partner was a huge gift.”
Since it was Grey and not Palin who ended up winning, the other dancers weren’t in much of a mood to discuss the accusations of voter tampering that plagued the latter half of the show. “This show has everything under control and I think it was just people’s rumors that were sparking,” says pro Lacey Schwimmer, who together with Kyle Massey, finished the season in second place. ”We got here, Bristol got here, and Jennifer got here all on fair terms. People just need to realize that.”
Executive producer Conrad Green certainly thought the best person won. “I think Jennifer was the judges favorite throughout, and she’s probably been the viewers’ favorite throughout. She is a brilliant champion,” he told EW. “I’m so proud of Bristol for getting where she did. I think she really proved her point and I’m really happy with how things turned out. I think it feels right.
“This was definitely our most surprising season,” he continued. “There were so many twists and turns. It was definitely unpredictable, and the audience got so into it. But if you look at the spirit of the final three couples, they were really thrilled for each other.”
Indeed. Schwimmer and Massey weren’t cheering about how they beat Palin, nor were they licking their wounds for trailing Grey and Hough. “We all made it to the finals, which is somethig to be celebrated, not to feel bad about or to feel angry about,” Schwimmer told reporters. “It’s such a cool thing to make it to this point of the competition.” And Massey’s response? “I’m just so hungry.”
As for Palin, who used the season finale to talk about how her win would give a “big middle finger to all the people out there who hate my mom and hate me,” the teen activist said she “decided there’s nothing I’m going to regret if I just go out there and do my best.” When asked if it was her intention to come out strong in the finale and talk about flipping America the bird, Palin only said, “my plan was to go out there and have fun and that’s what I did.”
Palin did admit the fascination over her survival on the show has boosted ratings, but she and partner Mark Ballas were in no mood to talk about her notoriety. “I don’t know why we are still talking about controversy and negativity,” he said. “Jennifer and Derek won tonight, it’s to be celebrated. Let’s live in the now, not with things that are going to give us a heart attack.”
Basking in her win, Grey said it was great to be in a movie like Dirty Dancing that brought so many people joy – only to follow that up with being part of a TV show “that means so much to people.” She can’t say what she’ll do next but she does know where’s she storing the mirror ball trophy.
“The kid’s room!” she exclaimed.

I’m happy to see that the best dancer won. I was afraid the credibility of the show was at stake. I do think Len’s credibility as a judge went way down.
yeah, the credibility was salvaged, but just barely.
I know right? Lawl.
Really though, the fact that you typed that whole thing out in an attempt to troll and cause a reaction says a lot about your “forever alone” status.
looks like “larry david” has a new name.
I’m wondering how many children created by God you’ll hurt before you realize that you have just established yourself as the captain of that ship. “Jesus Saves…yes, even you!”
Jack you’ve been reported. And hopefully you racist and idiotic comment will be removed.
Great, another psycho pretending to be a republican. NOT ALL REPUBLICANS ARE RACIST!
You are a tool, & if you keep talking like that, you will be a dead tool.
You must have had an experience with one of them for you to make racial slurs/comments like that. You sound like a bigot to me and one that has gone nowhere in life and will never amount to anything. Bet you any money you’re unemployed!
what a bully you are
Wow Jack the black man that your wife ran off with has made you hate all black people huh? I’m sure your comment is nothing more than a cry for attention. What you thought you were going to do was engage someone in an arguement about race but no such luck. Try to get yourself some help buddy.
So…Jack…you aren’t saying that Rush Limbacile is fat, ugly, smells bad, has an oily face and is a complete ignorant racist baffoon? Yeah…him and all his listeners like you. Your contribution to society makes a homeless person seem like a peace corps volunteer. Go crawl back under whatever rock you call home.
you are a sad, sad lil man who apparently got dumbed or rejected by a lovely wise black woman lol……………..sucks to be u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jack, I think that you are the one who should be shipped off somewhere on a boat. You are an outright racist.
YOU IS A MESS, jack! hahahahahahaha
I do think Len’s credibility went down, he used to be the harshest judge remember how he used to come down on Nicole; but scoring Bristol’s mediocre dances so high made him come across as a hypocrite.
I don’t think is is Len’s Credibility. He looks at steps and placement not politics and showmanship. I love that when the man doesn’t guzzle the kool-aid some of you drink he is wrong. He as the one who realized Kyle’s Free dance was fun but not that difficult. Even side by side they were always in synch.
I’m not drinking any Kool-Aid. I couldn’t give 2 sh!ts about her mom’s politics. Bristol clomped around that stage like a tree trunk. A tree trunk with sharp edges & balance, but THAT IS NOT DANCING. She was given the easiest, most fundamental steps! She was over-scored the last 5 weeks of the show. Thats a judging problem.
YES! I heart Jenny Grey.
i said from the first show that jennifer would win she was clearly the judges choice from the beginning. i believe it is totally unfair and kyle should have won we will not be watching this show again
i’m sure the producers are devastated at this news.
In the EW article that announced this season’s celebrities and their partners I called it that Jennifer Gray would make it to the very end and people would get up in arms (like they do every season where there is a standout star) because Jennifer has “dance experience” because of Dirty Dancing. If the fans aren’t mad at someone (Bristol) because they don’t deserve to be there, they get mad at the person that totally deserves to be there and can actually dance. Anywho, I totally called that one.
WEll that’s why many were voting for Kyle – he was the perfect balance. And newsflash – before Nicole last season, the audience/judges DIDN’T give the wins to the ringers.
Actually, Mya was a pretty big ringer. That girl has a ton of dance experience!
agree
good to see that talent won out in the end. it was a nice bonus that Kyle finished a well-deserved 2nd. i’m glad i don’t have to shoot my TV now.
I knew the voters would vote the best dancers in the end. Good job. There isn’t a better dancer in the world then Derek. He is the very best and Jennifer learned a lot by following him to be such a good dance partner for him. Congratulations Jennifer and Derek. You are the very best.
Let us not politicize the entertainment industry
UGH. THEN DON’T BRING UP POLITICS.
How about not TYPING IN ALL CAPS? Idiot.
I’m with you, Rotsap. I just wish Palin hadn’t turned politics into “entertainment.” I want our politicians to be serious, not media-whores.
There is a Dance-God and his name’s Patrick. He took care of “Baby” throughout the competition. I’m so glad that Jennifer and Derek won and their scores proved their skill, ability & perseverance to overcome injuries and doubt. Way to go!
That’s a disgusting insinuation. They weren’t even really friends.
before Patrick passed away him and jennifer talked and were on good terms with each other. You seem like a really sad person. I’m sorry.
She capitolized on the lovely Patricks death so she could get voters…sad
Boy, are you wacky. Just supposing there is an afterlife and supposing that Patrick had such “powers,” I think he’d be concentrating on something other than having that plastic surgery victim win a cheesy dance contest! Her exploitation of a dead man was unconscionable, and as the other poster said, they didn’t even like each other.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand WRONG AGAIN
I was disapointed that Grey won and she capitolized on Patricks death to win…That is not a friend……
Tired of the hate for people have here. She was a lovely dancer and was working through the pain. Very Happy for her
The dancer won. She should have. However, I thought this show was not supposed to be about professional dancers. That’s the disappointing part. A professional dancer should have won, but it takes the excitement completely out of the show.
I agree but I’m not disappointed. We just dodged a bullet. Can you imagine if Bristol won? That’s a whole other story. I’ll take previous trainning over whatever made Bristol stay so long. I’m still puzzled by her run.
If Bristol won, the guy that shot at his own TV just might come out to your house and shoot at your TV!!! LOL.
She wasn’t a professional dancer. She danced in a dance movie. how stupid are you?
She had lots of dance training–check into it
deborah, she was 50 years old and whipped the kids.
Many trained dancers dance well at 50, including Jennifer Grey. She even admits that her dance experience helped her get her role in Dirty Dancing.
Jennifer didn’t dance before dirty dancing. She danced in dirty dancing at a level of the character she was playing: an amateur guided by a professional who achieved marked improvement and execute some impressive moves considering she was still demonstrably an amateur. Even at the end of the movie she was clearly not in a league with the professionals in the movie like Cynthia Rhodes–she was just a kid who had learned to dance well enough to look good in the arms of an expert. After Dirty Dancing, she never had another dancing job. She is not a pro.
She studied dance from childhood and got her start dancing in commercials as well as her first movie, Reckless. She was a dancer who became an actor, not the other way around.
Yes, she appeared in a dance moving 25 years ago. And yes, she had dance training. But she was still 50, with all of the issues that go along with being older. And who knows how much dancing she has done since Dirty Dancing. I think it’s fair she won. It’s not like Nicole winning last season at all.
I’m surprised none of you are mentioning it’s in her genes. If you don’t know who her father is, google Joel Grey for heaven’s sake. I’m happy she won and really enjoyed her dancing. Nuff said.
A “big middle finger to all the people out there who hate my mom and hate me.” Classy! Just like her mom.
What do you expect from ol’ Porky?
I literally laughed out loud at ol’ Porky.. .hahah
Mom’s going on a journey and it’s not going to be the White House. She’s a too much ‘gets-in-your-face’ type person and one day, she’s going to crash, much like HP’s Carly Fiorino years ago. She is the reason that McCain is not president as no one wanted her as the VP.
Yeah, so much for Bristol being a sweet, shy young girl with no political motivations.
Here’s the thing about Ringer Jennifer – with Derek as her partner, with all her injuries, and given her hard work and energetic dances, she certainly *earned* her win. But did she deserve it? In the grand scheme of things? I’m not convinced. She was The Chosen One from the start, the judges favored her through finale night, and the audience (or really Bristol’s fanbase of whatever size) took better dancers like Audrina and Brandy out. And one can only imagine what their freestyles would have been like. Again, I can’t say she didn’t work for it, which helps explain why she won and why previous ringers like Mya and Sabrina Bryan at least had more of an uphill climb. But the judges also made sure to keep Jen’s biggest competition down while the producers favored Jen to begin with by casting weaker dancers without large fanbases. The show needs to go back to the drawing board next season and avoid ringers, or cast a trio of people who can genuinely dance (think the Shawn-Gilles-Melissa season, where it was a true nailbiter with excellent dancing).
Jennifer Grey- A classy lady
Derek Hough- A classy guy
Together- 1st class champions!
While I’m glad Grey won, it would be nice if they gave some of the other pros a chance. Anytime there is a clear favorite from day one it seems to go to one of the Hough-Ballas Clan (they’ve won 7 out of 11 seasons). It seems like the producers get their favorite pros like Cheryl won several seasons in a row before they finally gave her a lemon. I mean as long as there is going to be a ringer contestant can’t they at least be with a pro who isn’t always in the finals? I wasn’t a big Osmond fan, but I was really excited to see Kym finally win after having some truly awful contestants to deal with. I just don’t see why some of the pros like Tony are never paired with anyone who has a chance at winning.
I agree. Who can’t win with Yamaguchi or a Pussy Cat Doll? It would nice to see what DH could do with Kate Gosselin or see Tony/Maks/Edyta with a fantastic partner with a great fan base.
Agreed. (except about being glad Grey won)
I wish it’s Dmetry’s turn to win the cheesy trophy. The guy can really dance & so gorgeous to look at…
Is Derrick always going to be given the dancers with experience and chance of winning? What about Cheryl, she done the best dances ever, what about Chelsie she got Michael Bolton this year but shes great did wondors with Ty or how about Tony. If Derrick is DWTS little favourite there is no point callin this a competition.
As long as Corky Ballas has a big part in the selection process, you will see Derek get the best. I am so sick of his arrogant attitude! Give the other pros a break. The Hough/Ballas thing has got to be stopped, but as long as the Powers That Be continue to let this happen and the judges preselect the favorites…..well we know what that means
I’m glad someone else sees that Hough gets the dancers with experience. I stopped watching a long time ago because of it. I would like to see Cheryl win again.
Hypocrite! Let’s give Maks, Edyta (bring her back), and Lacey the ringers for a change! And what does Corky Ballas have to do with the selection process? If anything he would have given his own son a better partner.
Why on earth would Bristol think that people hate her? She’s just a contestant on a TV show. She’s taking this waaaay too seriously.
It might have to do with the death threats that she received. But I’m sure whoever sent those were just joshing.
Yeah it was obvious Jennifer was going to win from the jump, especially when they called her “The Chosen One”. I personally found her dancing to be overrated but I think Derek was fantastic this season…
