CBS renews 'The Young and the Restless' for three more years

Eric-Braeden-CBSImage Credit: CBSCBS announced today that it has renewed The Young and the Restless through the 2013-14 season. The sudser that’s produced by Bell Dramatic Serial Co. and Sony has been the most-watched daytime drama for nearly 22 years. So far this season, it is first in viewers (5.15 million), as well as women 18-49 and women 25-54.

“The Young and the Restless has been the No. 1 daytime drama on television for more than two decades, as well as an enduring symbol of CBS’s success in the daypart,” said CBS’ Barbara Bloom, senior vice president of daytime, in a statement. “Our audience’s beloved characters in Genoa City will continue to flourish under the leadership of Head Writer and Executive Producer Maria Bell and the wonderful storytelling ahead.”

Wow. This makes me feel really old. Though I don’t watch the show anymore, I used to watch it with my grandmother, along with Guiding Light. I so wanted to be Cricket!

  • dani

Good -I’ve fallen back in love with it.

    • Sina

Yeah, good. 3 more years of 112 year old Victor running around in tight black leather jackets karate kicking people!

  • Holly

The uni-directional cultural sludge-pump will keep gushing for three more years! Yippee!

  • Dee Jones

I`ve been a long time Y&R watcher, but lately it`s been unbearable to watch. I miss the good ole days, the 80s and 90s. Maria Arena Bell needs to get it together or the 40th year, in three years, will be its last!

    • AcaseofGeo

The problem is its pace. It has done away with the slow-as-molasses pace that worked so well for it for so many years. It kept you WANTING MORE & wanting it NOW. The instant gratification of its latter day plots of the last 3 years are something that previously would’ve taken a decade to explore. Its a shame they lost the great art of drawing it out.

      • Ember

I like the faster pace…it doesn’t take a character 3 episodes to say 2 lines of dialog. Plus, if a storyline is dumb, they can ditch it more quickly! If you want slow storylines, tell ‘em to bring back Passions.

    • TorontoTom

Are you kidding?!? I like when the storylines MOVE ALONG.

      • Diane Stewart

I agree faster lines are better makes you not want to miss an eppisode

    • Cindy

OMGGGG, I completely AGREE with you. The storylines now are so boring. For me and friends we stopped watching when they were doing the whole chipmunk thing. Dear God that was actually painful to watch. We would never miss an episode of the y & r now. To be completely honest I watch it maybe twice a week. I did watch it total and though oh god Sharon and Adam. That’s another, it’s too painful to watch. Those two together…BORING. Sharon and Nick, now that’s a sizzling couple. Anyways, bring back the old writers. Whoever the new ones are…TERRIBLE!!!

  • TorontoTom

Hmmm, how many times will Victor & Nicki have reconciled and then split up again over the next three years?!? I’d put the OVER/UNDER at 7.5. Any wagers?

  • TorontoTom

Geez, in 3 years, Daniel & Daisy’s unborn child will be coming home from boarding school as a surly but hot teenager.

  • TorontoTom

Will the 40th year of Y&R coincide with Katherine Chancellor’s 150th birthday celebration?

  • Rachel

    Yay!

  • carolyn

I watched Y&R for a lot of years but no longer watch. It has lost the “pzazz” it had in the earlier years and borders on absolute yawn…even Katherine is no longer the much hated villian. Many of the original characters have left the show. I know everyone has to move on to bigger and better things but I would suggest the show end now while it is still ahead…it will quickly fade from the radar screen before the three year contract is up.

    • Justin

Um news flash honey, Katherine hasn’t been a “villain” for years and years. Was she ever really a “villain” anyway? Hahaha

  • Jess

Yay! I’m glad it’s sticking around!

  • legallyblonde

My one and only “soap” indulgence……..love it.

  • Brett

This soap sucks eggs. They insult viewers by aging the Abby and not Kyle wne bothe were born the same year. The only thing they can do is kill of main characters that have connections with the main characters. John Abbott, Colleen, and Brad. They insult us by having psycho Adam and Sharon fall in love. Yeah right when he kidnapped her baby.

    • Meli

Is that really so crazy in Soapland? Any more than making Luke and Laura on ABC’s General Hospital a supercouple after he raped her? At least Adam only kidnapped a baby.

      • DR

Luke and Laura had chemistry. Adam & Sharon do not, sorry. Can’t watch anymore, I waited for years to see Nick & Sharon back together and for what? One day. I feel robbed.

  • Kevin

How long will The Price is Right and Bold and the Beautiful going to last at CBS?

    • Justin

Well B&B is the 2nd highest rated soap on television right now so I don’t think it’s going anywhere.

  • karen

I’m 19 years old and I’ve been watching it since I was about 4 or 5 years old. My mom and grandma always watched the Y&R they still do at 56 and 74. I’m addicted to it as well :)

  • elizabeth

I started watching the Young and the restless when I was 12..I’m 47 now and Kay Chancellor STILL LOOKS THE SAME AGE….How’s that possible??

    • Tom

      Lots of facelifts!!

    • TorontoTom

She’s an alien – with a great manicurist.
