Harry Smith out, as CBS gives 'The Early Show' a new look

early-showImage Credit: Jeff Neira/CBSHarry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez are out on CBS’s The Early Show, as the third-place morning show gets a facelift, according to the Associated Press. Chris Wragge and Erica Hill will be the new anchor duo, and Marysol Castro will replace weather forecaster Dave Price. Jeff Glor, one of the show’s current reporters, will be the new news reader. The new team will debut Jan. 3.

This is a bad idea. The Early Show now doesn’t cater as much to the inane “human interest” stories. This is a bad path, I fear with that Ken doll Chris at the helm :-/

    • Meli

What I love is the revisionist history CBS is giving Chris Wragge. They’re claiming he’s a newsman because he reads the news. THE MAN STARTED OFF ON ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT! He’s as much a newsman as Fabio is an astronaut.

    • LOL

No one watches these crappy morning shows.

    • peewee lvr

Why dont we get to the crux of this… people hate bald men…bald men of the world unite!

      • Diane

Taking Harry Smith and Dave Price off the CBS morning show was the worst thing they could have done. The new cast isn’t worth watching in my opinion.

      • Debra

They messed up the early show when they ousted Harry,Dave,Maggie!

    • kim

      CBS…Not very smart.

      • Toynet

Taking Harry, Maggie, and Dave off the early show was the worst thing that could have happened. I don’t watch it anymore.

  • Meli

Just go watch the movie ‘Morning Glory’ and you’ll see the reason Harry Smith got axed from the Early Show. He’s a newsman in the age of Chef-on-a-Shoestring and the Top Colors to Wear for Christmas.

    • Meli

btw, CBS, I actually liked Harry and Maggie on your show. I can’t stand to watch your Saturday version of the show, which means it’s likely after January the Early Show will fall to 4th place behind CW’s The Daily Buzz.

      • sb

I hate watching it on Saturday too!

      • bootsycolumbia

I only watch the Chef on a Shoestring segment. Otherwise, the Saturday version blows.

      • lafflynne

ditto for me. can’t stand the Saturday version. will not be watching weekday version after New Year.

  • Redvector

Here’s an idea. Give up the notion of having a morning show on CBS. They suck at it.

    • Tash

CBS’ president, Les Moonves, has often been rumored to want to get rid of the entire news staff and contract the stuff they have to do to someone like CNN. Could it be time? I’ve been watching the Today Show for decades now and sometimes I want to scream. I’d be happy to watch a newsy, intelligent, fast paced show but ABC and CBS can’t seem to do it very well. I don’t know why certain personalities grate more in the morning. The two newbies in this picture look so vapid, I can’t imagine wanting to watch them.

  • laura

I am so disappointed… I love watching Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez and Marc Price… I prefer them to Good Morning America and Today… think I will watch Good Day NY.

    • Garbyguy

Actually, its Dave Price. Marc Price was Skippy on Family Ties.

      • Chris

        LOL!

      • Anthos17

Marc Price was also played point guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the mid to late 80′s. Busy guy, huh?

    • Susan

I agree. I love Maggie and Harry. What a big mistake CBS has made. The new crew is really 2nd rate at best.

      • Jo Chavez

I also LOVE the Early Show the way it was. Don’t count on me watching it after Harry, Maggie and Dave leave. I’m sure one person’s opinion doesn’t matter to CBS but ther I have said it.

      • Karen

I will now switch the station

    • teresa

I love Harry Smith. Will chose to watch another network now as I don’t care for the new line up at all. I hope Harry and Maggie land wonderful jobs that will put them in direct competition and they beat the ratings by leaps and bounds

    • Starr

I am so disappointed — I used to look forward to the Early Show. This morning I used turned to another channel. I just don’t even want to watch anymore. Harry, Maggie and Dave were MY favorites and I NEVEER turned to another channel when they were on.

      • joel almaroad

I enjoyed the early show until the changes came. I had switched from another network. I found that the Early Show was more to my liking. I feel that a mistake was made in the changes.

    • Diane Pratt

My husband and I recently retired and have been enjoying watching the Eary Show. What is CBS thinking? They had some very human reporters that reported and entertained. We looked forward to Harry, Maggie and Dave. I am getting tired of good programs dissapearing. TV is not worth watching anymore. 100+ channels and nothing to watch.

    • Larry

I agree I enjoyed watching Harry, Maggie and Dave. I am going to watch GMA from now on. Retired and nothig to watch???

    • KAREN

I WON’T WATCH THE EARLY SHOW NOW.
I LOVED WATCHING HARRY , MAGGIE , AND DAVE. I HOPE YOUR RATINGS DROPS TO THE BOTTOM OF RATINGS!!

  • Elena

CBS had the best morning show out there (for the reason Lauren mentioned — and others). Since I won’t watch GMA or the Today Show, the TV will go off after local news ends.

  • deborah

I won’t watch anymore. Harry, Maggie and Dave are the ONLY reasons I tuned in. BUMMER

    • Margie

      Thank you Ms.Norville.

    • rosechaney

harry dave and maggie and erica are the only reason i watch the early show hang it up because i wont watch it anymore they make you feel that u are getting all the news and evrything that goes with the show they are a pleasure to tune in for

  • Jean

Wow, that is a horrible, horrible mistake on CBS’s part. I have always enjoyed watching the Morning Show and love the folks on it. I definitely will no longer watch the show.

    • Ann Williams

I completely agree with you that I shall not be watching CBS anymore with Chris and Erica–they just don’t give me that warm feeling– too pretentious and speak too rapidly. Big mistake!

      • Andy

I used to watch Erica on CNN and was rather impressed. However, I agree that lately it seems she has a pretentious way about her and speaks too fast. I must agree with this post that the rapid fire pace of Chris is undesirable as well. They should have been kept on Saturday mornings. I will not be watching The Early Show in 2011.

    • susan

I agree-the Morning Show will not be the same—didn’t catch it this morning and probably won’t again. Why fix something if it isn’t broke??

  • Sarah

Just hire Rachel McAdams as executive producer.

  • DAG

Noooo! We love Harry – I guess it will be Good Morning America for us. Harry is an actual journalist! And, we’ll miss Dave so much.

  • jmr

I just started to watch CBS after years of watching NBC…oh well, guess I’ll go into work early…

  • Iakovos

This new team will not help ratings. The show is never first with anything, it seems. HARRY SMITH and HANNAH STORM rocked it for me in recent years. I miss PAULA ZAHN, too. CBS has always been such a strong news machine and i never understood why mornings are so difficult for them. But then again, all three webs are carbon copies. MARIETTE HARTLEY’s show was to be different in the mid 1980s and that bombed. Maybe an hour of hard news, followed by STEVE HARTMAN and such stories. Or better yet… maybe early morning is where soap operas may thrive again!

  • Molly

I switched to the Early Show about a year or so ago, and definitely prefer it over The Today Show, and GMA. Based on this info, I will NOT continue to watch ES. Saved by the Bell repeats wins out.

  • jfms777

I wish GMA would replace Stephanopoulos with Harry Smith now.

    • Christine

      Fantastic suggestion!

    • Anna

      Totally agree!

      • Brenda

        Absolutely! what a great idea!

    • Deann

Great idea! Then George Stephanopoulos can go back to This Week on Sundays and relieve us of Christianne Armenpour who is horrible!

      • Troy

I agree! ABC has ruined This Week on Sundays. The show needs to be revamped immediately.

    • Anna

Excellent idea! Are you listening, ABC?

    • Sharon Markey

      brilliant idea!!

  • Lisa

I suppose I’ll start watching Mike & Mike on ESPN2 now. I listen to them in the car on the way to work anyway, so I’ll just catch an hour of them on tv before I listen in the car.

    • No Jive!

Mike and Mike are sweet! I actually liked Harry Smith and Dave Price.

  • PM

I never liked Dave Price and his silly stunt segments. They were just out of place on a morning show. He made all these goofy facial expressions in the commercials. I think they want a younger looking hosting panel to match with Good Morning America’s youthful set of hosts. I think that CBS was too frustrated being stuck in 3rd place for 5 to 6 years straight and wanted that new look immediately.

    • Dinjab

5-6 years? Try 15-16 years or 25-26 years. They’ve never been higher than third place, EVER.

Instead of having Survivor losers on, they could actually keep Harry Smith and try REAL NEWS in the morning and play that up…but no, they’re going into Mario Lopez territory now with Chris Wrigge. What a joke.

      • K Deiss

We will be off to another network.Loved Harry S
