James Van Der Beek and Mark-Paul Gosselaar together at last: Exclusive

Tina Gill/PR Photos (2)

It’s the onscreen pairing we forgot we’ve been waiting to see since the ’90s: James Van Der Beek will guest star on the new TNT series Franklin & Bash starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer, EW has learned exclusively. The show, scheduled to premiere this summer, centers on two young, fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants street lawyers who cause a seismic culture clash when they join a legendary, button-down law firm. Meyer plays Jared Franklin, who loves sticking it to authority every chance he gets, while Gosselaar plays Peter Bash, who has a knack for connecting with jury and judge. Van Der Beek, last seen on NBC’s Mercy, will play Nathan Connor, Peter’s ex-girlfriend’s fiance. Nathan hires Peter after his bachelor party gets too wild in a hotel. Considering this series has enough comedy in it to have originally been shot as a pilot for TBS, we anticipate that someone will note that Peter’s ex definitely has a type.

Speaking to EW last August, Gosselaar said the relationship Franklin and Bash share was modeled ever-so-slightly after buddy comedies like Superbad. “I don’t want to say it’s like Boston Legal, but it is very quick-witted,” he added. He also confirmed he bares his bottom in the premiere. Franklin & Bash also stars Malcolm McDowell, Dana Davis, Kumail Nanjiani, Reed Diamond, and Garcelle Beauvais.

Along with teasers for the shows listed above, we also have intel from Kevin McKidd about more dark and twistiness coming on Grey’s Anatomy; Supernatural showrunner Sera Gamble opening up about Castiel; and Zachary Levi on celebrating Thanksgiving Chuck-style. If that’s not something to be thankful for, nothing is.

OLIVIA PHONES HOME ON ‘FRINGE’
If you thought the Altivia stuff so far was as tense as it could get, wait until you see the Dec. 2 episode. I promise it will knock you (and Altyou) on your butt in the first minutes of the episode and keep you there the entire hour. The tension begins with Peter getting a message relayed to him from Olivia. The question is: Does he believe it? Should he? Meanwhile, a phrase Olivia once told Peter will play a huge part in this episode, and there’s a blink-and-you’ll miss it tender moment between Peter and Walter. Speaking of, Walter introduces us to the term “vagenda” (use your imagination), and we learn of a new (old) device that has the ability to communicate with the other side. Most importantly, to answer a question posed to us by Twitter pal @val04, those of you hoping for Olivia’s return to our world (erm, everyone) should tune in to this episode. Just sayin’. If you thought Maksim Chmerkovskiy was upset about not making the final three on Dancing With the Stars…well, you were right! Brandy’s butt-slapping partner called in for our latest edition of the InsideTV podcast to discuss not making the finals (“This is bulls—”), his reaction to a verbal confrontation with a certain female judge (“Screw Carrie Ann”) and whether he was, in fact, wearing a thong during his week 8 waltz (you’ll have to listen to find out!). You have to hear it to believe it…and even then you still may not believe it. But Maks isn’t the only reality standout calling this week. The self-proclaimed king — not queen, mind you — of Survivor: Nicaragua, Brenda Lowe, also phoned in to defend not only her refusal to scramble for votes, but also the woman who backstabbed her: NaOnka. And if scripted fare is more your thing, Jennifer Armstrong joins Michael Slezak, Annie Barrett and yours truly to discuss why Grey’s Anatomy has again attained must-watch status after a rocky couple of seasons. It’s the most action-packed episode of InsideTV yet! You can download all the madness straight to your mp3 player, or click on the player below to enjoy all the podcast magic right here and right now. Plus, if you have a question for the InsideTV, you can tweet it to @InsideTVPodcast. Okay, prepare yourself for Maks and Brenda unleashed…

'Mike & Molly' exclusive: Billy Gardell teases special Thanksgiving episode! (Hint: Think last month's Internet debate)

Categories: EW Exclusive, TV Scoop

mike-mollyImage Credit: Sonja Flemming/CBSCBS’ hit comedy Mike & Molly will have the last word on the Marie Claire blog post “Should ‘Fatties’ Get a Room? (Even on TV?). Star Billy Gardell (Mike) told EW exclusively that he’ll make a “tiny nod” to last month’s Internet debate at the end of the Thanksgiving episode planned for Nov. 22.

“It’s a very eloquently put thing that I get to say at the Thanksgiving speech that kind of says everything we feel,” said Gardell, who begrudgingly admits that the post generated a lot of awareness for the Monday night comedy. “It did give it a lot of attention, but I rather attention be got by the good work we’re doing. Overwhelmingly, people from the Internet came to our side. And not just to our side but to the side of overweight people, which was nice.

“[Creators] Mark Roberts and Chuck Lorre say there is a certain amount of levity that comes with any kind of flaw you have, whether it’s being overweight or drinking too much or gambling,” Gardell added. “Comedy is comedy but when you say you hate someone for how they look, then that changes the atmosphere.”

As for the Thanksgiving episode, Gardell said the show’s entire ensemble — including Cleo King (grandma) and Rhondi Reed (Peggy) — will gather for the holiday meal. READ FULL STORY »

Claire Danes returns to series TV with Showtime's 'Homeland'

Categories: Cable, Casting, Television

Claire-DanesImage Credit: Landmark/PR PhotosAfter earning an Emmy for the HBO biopic Temple Grandin, Claire Danes is ready to star in her first TV series since My So-Called Life. Danes will lead the Showtime drama pilot Homeland, from 24 producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa. Loosely based on Gideon Raff’s Israeli television series Prisoners of War, the show centers on an American soldier taken prisoner during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Per the network’s synopsis: Left for dead, the soldier miraculously returns to the U.S. after years in captivity. Danes plays Carrie Anderson, a driven CIA officer battling her own psychological demons, who becomes convinced that the intelligence that led to his re-capture was a setup and that this national hero may be connected to an Al Qaeda plot to be carried out on American soil. The pilot, set to begin production in January, will be directed by Michael Cuesta (Dexter), and written by Gordon, Gansa and Raff. Casting for the role of Sergeant Scott Brody, the male lead, will be announced shortly.

Roger Ailes apologizes for calling NPR 'Nazis,' but not for calling Jon Stewart 'crazy'

Categories: Television

Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes has apologized after calling NPR “Nazis” for firing Juan Williams during an interview with The Daily Beast‘s Howard Kurtz. “I was of course ad-libbing and should not have chosen that word, but I was angry at the time because of NPR’s willingness to censor Juan Williams for not being liberal enough,” Ailes said in his apology. (Williams was fired by NPR following his not-so-PC comments about Muslims during an interview on The O’Reilly Factor.) While speaking with The Daily Beast, Ailes said of NPR: “They are, of course, Nazis. They have a kind of Nazi attitude. They are the left wing of Nazism. These guys don’t want any other point of view. They don’t even feel guilty using tax dollars to sprout their propaganda. They are basically Air America with government funding to keep them alive.”

But NPR wasn’t Ailes’ only target during the interview — the chairman also slammed Jon Stewart when asked about the Comedy Central host’s disdain for the 24-hour cable news cycle. “He hates conservative views,” Ailes told Kurtz. “He hates conservative thoughts. He hates conservative verbiage. He hates conservatives … He’s crazy. If it wasn’t polarized, he couldn’t make a living. He makes a living by attacking conservatives and stirring up a liberal base against it.” Your move, Stewart.

'Fringe': Lance Reddick dishes on tonight's Broyles-centric episode, and how the real-life 'Donnie Brasco' inspires him

FRINGE-The-AbductedImage Credit: Liane Hentscher/Fox

With Fringe closing in on a major turning point in its Crisis On Infinite Earths (Or Just Two) storyline, and with the J.J. Abrams sci-fi series signaling that it’s about to push into a new layer of mystery mythology (Who are “The First People?” Are they connected to The Observer? Is Sam Weiss one of them? I want to know!), tonight’s new episode lays the groundwork for the midseason denoument by showcasing Phillip Broyles. Not the “our world” Special Agent Broyles, the charismatic Don’t mess with me suit that leads the FBI’s hush-hush EWRT Fringe division hidden away in a Harvard laboratory. No, tonight we’re going “over there” and digging into Colonel Broyles, the charismatic, Don’t mess with me military man who leads the very public, EWRT Fringe division located at the base of the Statue of Liberty. (Note: EWRT = Emergency Weirdness Response Team. Every world needs one, including our own, especially given the baffling and threatening reality-eroding situation currently facing our culture.)

The episode, entitled “The Abducted,” offers a peek into Col. Broyles’ private life, and as such functions as a mirror world analog to last season’s Broyles-centric outing, “Earthling.” READ FULL STORY »
