'Bones' star Emily Deschanel on next week's big episode, the Gravedigger's return, and more

bones-emily-deschanelImage Credit: Ray Mickshaw/FOXYou saw in the preview for next week’s Bones that this is the episode where Brennan realizes she made a big mistake when she turned down Booth (dial 1-800-finally on your touch-tone phone). But what happens after to the calculated, emotionally closed squint queen following her long-awaited realization? Emily Deschanel braved a conference call of reporters to tell us what to expect following the big episode, the next time we’ll see the gravedigger, and what’s to come for Booth and Hannah. (It’s not good news, Hannah haters.) Here are the highlights:

1. After Brennan’s heartbreaking confession to Booth, “There is a reaction, but it might not be the reaction people want,” Deschanel said.  “You’ll see Brennan kind of becoming more protected than she has been, even.”

2. Hanna and Booth will become more serious. The tone in Deschanel’s voice made me think that this might be the proposal executive producer Stephen Nathan told us about last month — but dear God, let’s hope I’m wrong and just reading too much into this.

3. We’ve been told since last season that we hadn’t seen the last of the Gravedigger — and she returns in episode 10 (airing Jan. 20)!

4. David Boreanaz has sat in the director’s chair a few times before (he will next helm the upcoming sniper episode), but Emily will not be directing an episode about a wedding planner as originally planned. The change was made following news of Bones’ new American Idol lead-in. “They were worried if we had two episodes very soon after Idol where I wasn’t very present in the show, it might take away [from the ratings],” she said. They are thinking about moving her directorial debut to the end of the season.

5. Hannah will learn about Brennan’s confession to Booth at the beginning of the 2011 episodes. “It creates a situation with Hannah and Brennan and their friendship,” she said.

6. Some upcoming cases will involve dare-devil BMX bikers and polygamy.

7. Booth has (so far) in the scripts not had any doubts about his decision to stay with Hannah. Ready, set…rant.

  • The Jager Gods

Yup, that sucks. Rapidly losing interest in this show, thanks to the crappy Hannah subplot. Lame. The writer/producers are really off the mark.

    • IMHO

Yeah, I am not a Hannah fan at all.

      • bill

Screw Brennan, I love Hannah, just because she throws a proverbial wrench in so many people’s soapy fantasies. It’s a cliche to have the lead actor and the lead actress in a show be a couple. They should get Brennan a boyfriend of her own and let it be the end of all this high school drama.

      • dd

The Hannah storyline is the very epitome of a soapy plotline. I genuinely don’t understand where you are coming from.
The producers of the show spent five years basing the entire show around the chemistry of Booth and Brennan. Sorry, you just don’t get to do that and yank it out from people in the 6th year. Don’t want to deal with the consequences of a will-they, won’t-they? Don’t even start it.

      • bill

@dd : What’s so difficult to understand, may I ask? I watch Bones like it’s a procedural, with some humor thrown in every once in a while. But the gooey soapy stuff is as cliche as it gets. I don’t care how either of the lead actors end up with regards to their love life. I’m just enjoying the fact that people are really annoyed and complaining about their cliche being sidelined.

      • b

Because pure procedurals are not at all cliched, right?

Unfortunately for you, the show would probably be off the air by now if it were a pure procedural – most of the audience is watching specifically because it’s more than that. There are too many other procedurals for it to compete with without that “something extra” that the characters and their rich lives provide.

      • jayme

Bill if you are not into the soapy things then you should watch the first 48 on A&E. Real crimes.

    • egeg

Totally off the mark. I can’t see how having Booth propose to Hannah in four episodes time can make anything better, either.

    • jayme

Agreed, the whole Hannah thing is really making me lose interest. Fans waited 5 seasons to have a real kiss just for show to try and drag on Bone’s and booth’s relationship. Lame

    • jayme

      agreed…..

    • bonescrazy

Oh come on!! You gotta have More patience and faith!! you know the creator/ writers won’t let B&B Romantic path go straight to the desired conclusion-the big hook up, do you?

  • Briana

    Hopefully the snipper kills Hannah.

    • mike

      me too

    • IMHO

      Good comment, I agree.

    • Chuck

Probably. The sniper kills Hannah – (sniper tried earlier this season). Booth becomes dejected. Bones consoles him. Bones knows that he proposed to Hannah so she holds him at “arms length” till next season.

      • Connie

I’d much rather Hannah get the bullet than Daisy, as some have predicted. You know what? Shoot her twice. I don’t want the producers using it as an excuse to have ANOTHER bedside recovery scene.

      • josephine

LOL. i sign up to your idea. It is one of the best I have heard.

    • Phyl

Keep in mind if she is killed off of the show then Booth is going to grieve and she becomes more endearing to him. No she needs to turn out to be not as sweet as she appears, and they both need to realize they aren’t good together, then she needs to hit the hot and dusty. Hopefully over Christmas this all happens and come January she’s outta there.

  • Mel

I lost interest a while ago and this isn’t doing anything to get my interest back.

  • The Voice of Reason

Love it, sounds as if the writers/producers (the people who created the characters and premise) know exactly what they’re doing.

    • Tara

Is it reasonable to have a couple that EVERYONE knows is supposed to be together (or at least give it a shot) be in season SIX (and 7+ years of knowing each other) and still the writers and producers think the viewers will leave if they get together too EASILY???? Hart Hansen says he doesn’t believe in the ‘Moonlighting curse” but obviously by now he’s lying to himself or to us

    • julia

Oh, hey, sure thing. Because people who followed this show for years to watch

Booth learn that he’s not defined by his past as a killer and he can be something better than That Guy and

Brennan learn that she can trust people to love her

are planted on the couch to watch

Booth’s screen time being limited to his grand romance with someone who loves him for being both a killer and That Guy, played by an actress so grating that she managed to make a rape victim unsympathetic on House, and

Brennan sink into something like an autistic fugue because her best friend isn’t interested in her if she won’t sleep with him.

Oh, no, wait. They’re not. To the point where they’re moving the show to after American Idol in hopes that it will stop the ratings bleedout (and at that, this year’s ratings include some DVR viewership, so the drop from last season is even greater than it looks at first glance).

Yep. I’d say that the Hansen/Nathan poke-the-shippers strategy is working out great for them. And the funny thing is, I wasn’t really on that train until I decided it was the only way I was going to get some relief from how genuinely bad these people are at writing this deadly, interminable storyline.

Well, at least it’s keeping the lulz crowd happy.

  • The Wrong Direction

So help me, if Booth proposes to Hannah, I will quit this show. I’ve loved it until this season, but am done with this particular character. I might not be if the “actress” playing her could act.

    • bringer of bad news

      Sides suggest he will. Sorry.

    • Kate

Agree about hating her character, but remember they said PROPOSAL that doesn’t mean that Hannah and Booth will be engaged, don’t quit on a show for one character…

      • dd

It’s not just one character. It’s what they’ve done to all the others as well. So disappointing.

      • Monica

True, besides…what if Hannah rejects Booth after the proposal? Maybe after she learns about Brennan’s confession she will be more understanding about their relationship and that she cant keep up to that because booth doesnt really love her, he loves breannan.

    • H

I agree with you guys. I don’t see B&B’s chemistry, not even one drop. What happened to the “knight and shining fbi standard issue body armor”?

  • MKS

Booth is clearly stupid for staying with Hannah after Bones confesses her actual feelings! Bright side, Bones is FINALLY recognizing things. Plus, Stephen Nathan, one of the creators has said that they’ve already planned how Hannah leaves the picture, but they’re still working on the journey that gets to that point. People, breathe. Hannah will leave at some point – it’s just going to be a bit longer.

    • Luiza

“I missed my chance.” I literally stood up and shouted “WELL DUH!”

    • delbrea

But will the writers reach that journey and find that all of their loyal fan based have moved on to another show. I am not sure how much more of Hannah I will take, I do know that when I see she is in an episode I find myself channel surfing to see what else is on.

      • dd

Pretty sure she’s around definitely until episodes 13/14. Possibly even up to 17. She’ll be here all season. They love her. For some reason.

    • QMII

I am no longer interested.IMO, the writers have killed the show with this stupid sl. It’s no longer enjoyable to watch. The mysteries aren’t so good, and the writers have been stringing the viewers along for sooooo long– I am so disappointed in this show. They had a good thing and killed it.

    • murley

think about it realistically. you put it all out there and get rejected and then abandoned so you do your best to move on from years of feelings and all of a sudden as soon as you seem happy with someone else the person says “oops, i made a mistake”? i imagine booth will be kind of angry or at least react that way. i think him suddenly dumping hannah and running into brennan’s arms is really cheesy and unrealistic. i want these 2 together and as frustrating as it is to watch sometimes, they are writing it like real life.

      • chelsie

@murley Now this is the comment I can most relate to. For all us Bones fans that have watch every single episode, do you know Booth at all? There is no way he would just dump Hannah like a “consolation prize”. He is too moral. The truth is Brennan made a terrible mistake to reject the chance he wanted, but she wasn’t ready. The only way to keep the show alive is to feed the storyline with possiblities. I am not fond of the Booth/Hannah relationship either, but look what it has done to help Brennan realize her true feelings. She accepted that she made a mistake, people. Give the writers a chance to seamlessly play it out. It will be great to watch (even if I cry some more). Many blessings to all my fellow BONES fans.

  • sd

I really don’t understand why producers kill shows with stupid added drama from new characters. You can get the drama with the characters you have. I mean its their show to do with they like with and kill. But I’m no longer watching.

  • Kat

For now I’m putting my trust in the writers, but they should know that if Booth and Brennan never have chance, they will loose a lot of their fan base.

  • googie

i haven’t watched in 2 yrs. love the cast, the show became a yawn!

  • Dan

Sigh… The show runners are really doing all they can to destroy the characters we used to love… This entire season is a big fat FAILURE so far.

The show is just boring now, Booth acts like a jerk and I fast forward most Hannah scenes. Bones and Hannah as friends? Really? Come on! I’m starting to hope that the ratings will just keep falling, that seems to be the only way they will learn.

    • Me

I think it’s obvious that the Bones writers are scared to put Booth/Brennan so they won’t do it until the last season. I get that but they are making Booth seem like a jerk this season. He isn’t even acting like Brennan’s friend.

I would have no problems with the storylines if BB still had some kind of friendship. Everything this season has been angst and it’s painful to watch. The Squints barely work together too. This whole season has been off.

      • dd

HH himself said that the show doesn’t work when Booth and Brennan are apart (after the Perotta episode), so I cannot fathom this new storyline.
Not only that, Hannah sucks screen time away from established, interesting characters with depth.
And it’s supremely ironic that they were so scared to put them together in case they lost the UST and then *obliterated* it with the Hannah storyline.
I mean, did they even realise how much damage the character of Booth has taken in the eyes of fans?

  • KM

I always thought Booth would be back by Brennan’s side in a heartbeat if he realized that she’s ready for him. If that’s not the case…my love for Booth just went way downhill. Though I’ll watch the episode and hold off judgment till then.

    • Cass

Then again, would you love Booth as much if he just suddenly drops the girl he asked to move in with him? The one he has told he loves, and the one who clearly (even if the chemistry isn’t quite as compelling) cares about him? That’d be a little cold. Whether you like Hannah or not. She’s a perfectly nice woman overall. We all know Booth does his darndest to uphold his commitments. He might want to be back by Brennan’s side in a heartbeat, but I don’t think he believes it would be the right thing to do to Hannah.

      • dd

Perhaps he should have waited slightly longer than to fig Hannah in an open warzone then…

      • Right dd

…because fans would LOVE to see the story dragged out to pretend they are real people in real time.
Cass, you are very much correct.

    • pr

why be with Brennan when she continually says she doesn’t believe in love. Even though she realizes she missed her chance, its to no avail because according to the above article she withdraws even more. So what would be the point of Booth waiting for her if she still pulls away instead of trying to win him over.
And why would Booth tell Hannah about what Brennan said? what an idiot, if it was him that let the information out. What woman would continue to be friends with a woman who wants her man. That would be counter productive to the “friendship” he wanted between them. ugh, in this regard the writers messed up big time.

      • marple

Agree ! wish tptb would realise that too. What woman would be friend with the other woman.

That Brennan withdraws even more might be explained by him turning her down.
Yes Brennan says she doesn´t beleive in love, yet she shows him all the time imho how much she cares and love him.

Booth is the one beleving in love, it´s just the object of it thats changing.

  • BJohnson

The proposal won’t go through. Remember she thought he was proposing the last ep she was on and she was about to freak out.
I am holding on. Just to see her finally admit being wrong is good enough reason to watch.
What friendship do Hannah and Bones share? I’m still not over Hannah asking for a gift and Bones just handing over her shades, Why The Face? It should not be a big shock to her, sheesh, he practically was begging Bones to stay and drink with him and Hannah to stay that night Hannah moved in. I’m so glad that scene is in the car, the place where they have their awesome conversations.

  • B

It has been really lame this year, and it’s not just the addition of Hannah. It’s the lazy way they’ve used her for ALL the drama this season. Bones has always been best when it allows us to love the characters for their flaws, but all they do is have Booth and everyone else constantly praise her. Honestly, it’s boring and I’m incredibly disappointed in the heads of the show, who I’ve always trust to steer the show correctly. I believe they will eventually steer Booth and Brennan together, but I might not care anymore by the time that happens.

    • BL

I just dislike the way they’re writing Brennan’s character lately. Next to Hannah’s honest, earthy character, they are making Brennan look like a total weirdo!

      • Kate

Is it just me or has Brennan just completely regressed? She was really developing into an amusing and emotional character and now she is more of a caricature.

Same for Booth- his whole world revolves around Hannah now, he isn’t nice to his friends etc… the character has become so singularly focused as to be one dimensional.

  • Amanda

    Hannah is annoying!!!! Arrgghh…

But, positive note, Keith Mars is in the next episode! :)

  • Amanda

I had already demoted the show to DVR status (as opposed to breathlessly anticipating each new episode live on Thursday nights). Since I have not yet watched last night’s episode or seen the promo for next week’s, my immediate reaction to this article was to contemplate abandoning the show altogether. I simply cannot bear to watch the Hannah scenes (for a variety of reasons) and cannot believe that the producers are going to ratchet up this drama even further. What a disappointment. Good thing I started watching Castle last season (after Bones really started to disappoint). It is a much better show. Funny and not so juvenile in its approach to the characters.

    • Castle, anyone?

I totally agree! I LOVE Bones, but this season has been a total snooze. I started DVRing the show after the first episode. Not just because of the strangely unfulfilling relationship between Booth and Hannah, but because all the characters seem to have been watered down. As much as it pained me to see the chemistry between Booth and Bones in prior seasons, it kept me interested :) Now that the hope was killed this season, it’s just not the same.

Castle has my vote this season! :)
