'Dexter' renewal on the way: Reports

dexterImage Credit: ShowtimeAmid news of stronger-than-ever ratings, it is being reported that Dexter is set to return for season 6. (Showtime has yet to issue a confirmation.)

With two episodes to go this season, the show earned 2.54 million viewers last week, a hair behind the series high of 2.57 million set by the season 4 finale. The shows ratings performance is especially encouraging considering the show was charged this season with producing material strong enough to follow the Trinity plotline, led by an Emmy Award-winning performance from John Lithgow. If the numbers are any indication, the trifecta of guest stars they responded with, including Julia Stiles, Peter Weller, and Jonny Lee Miller as Jordan Chase, seems to have done the job.

I truly hope Season 6 is the last. I can only suspend my disbelief of him always getting away with it so much.

    • Daniel

NO! MORE! I want dexter on for the rest of my life. Love the show, and I love the tension of whether or not he’s going to be caught. Let me keep suspending disbelief.

      • jmo

Agreed. Having read the books, I wasn’t sure how much life the series would have. I was initially concerned that they were off the rails when they killed Rita but this has been one of their best seasons to date. If the writing and character development continues, I’d be happy if they’re picked up for a 7th.

      • Flip

Less is more. Let’s get to the drama of everyone finding out Dexter is a serial killer—I wanna see him on death row!

      • Mike

That would be a awesome way to end the show. Death Row interviews a real character study type of story. See how everyone around him copes with the fact they never really knew Dexter.

    • Jennifer Morgan

      DON’T CANCEL DEXTER!

Whoa! Look where they ranked Dexter in the vid!

THOSE SCENES ARE FROM THE FINALE!

  • UGH

I’m so tired of seeing pictures of Taylor Swift always holding her head in her hands somehow ——–>

    • Man In Black

LOL! You got it spot on! There I look to my right, there she is. What a ‘ho.

    • Mary

OH! I thought you were going to say you’re tired of seeing Taylor Swift making her hands into a little heart shape. I am so sick of people making the little heart shape- its almost as played out as “hey soul sister”

    • Gross!

HA HA HA HA HA!! Ugh is right! I’ve heard better singers in my shower.

  • Buffy Freak

I’m not sure how I feel about this season but that’s likely due to the fact that last season with Trinity was beyond great. That said, I look forward to many more seasons of Dexter.

    • rerun

I was worried about this season at first. Worried it was gonna go Smits, but really have enjoyed the direction it went.

  • meliot

The last couple of episodes have been Phen.om.in.al! I can’t believe it’s been six seasons. Would love to see more of Lumen and Dexter next season.

    • Merideth

Agree. This season has turned out to be AMAZING. Loving how Lumen is bringing out more sides to Dexter. Would love to see more of them next season as well.

      • to merideth

you are pathetically sentimental and you sound like a teeny-bopper

    • JBD

Lumen has made this season really great. And I agree, she brings out different sides to Dexter that we’ve never seen before, especially in the last episode. The emotions that were going through his features were def. new ones for Dexter, and it makes the show more intriguing.

      • @jbd

the character of Lumen is horrendously boring and all these emotions you’re reading into her only exist in your mind – because Stiles can’t act and constantly speaks in a monotone. It stretches credibility to think that Dexter feels anything more than sorry for her.

    • @meliot

Would love to see Lumen die.

  • Emily

KEEP THEM COMING!!! This is by far my favorite season, next to the first one. I love the Lumen and Dexter storyline; hope they don’t kill her off. :-(

  • dave

Lumen rocks! The show is becoming completely psychotic. Those two together are great.

    • Dear Dave

Lumen Sucks. And the only psychotic here is YOU.

  • Mary

I wonder how long Lumen will really last- no one who knows Dexter’s secret has ever survived.

    • jmo

Maybe if Deb gets closer to discovering Dexter’s true nature, Lumen will be the fall guy….Who knows?!?

  • Kevin

I hope the news of a renewal is accurate. This season has been one of the best of the series. Lumen, for all of her detractors out there, has been awesome. Julia deserves some award drama for her…Dexter is as awesome as always…and the emotional quality has been dynamic. Deb will be the one to bring him in. The only way it can end. Several more seasons from now…of course.

    • Heather

I wonder if Deb might forgive Dexter if/ when she finds out? She seemed to show alot of empathy toward the “vigilante” she figures is hunting down the rapists…

    • to Kevin

?Julia deserves “some award drama??” How about WORST BLOODY ACTRESS EVER ON TV…EVER!!!!!

  • MCS

Isn’t that funny? As an avid Dexter fan for 4 years, this year I stopped watching after the first six or seven episodes because I thought it was terrible.

    • Kevin

You gave up too soon… it’s REALLY good right now.

      • jmo

Agreed. I was getting iritated at first but it all came together. You should come back after these last two episodes air before you make a judgement to walk away from Season 6.

    • Flip

It sucks without Rita. Lumen is disgusting but at least she won’t make it past the season finale.

      • Heather

Dexter’s relationship with Rita is based on a lie. She has never truly known Dexter. Though I hate that the character died so tragically, I am happy to see Dexter reveal himself and find exceptance with someone that is not a do#che (i.e. Laila & Miguel Prado).

      • Flip

You are happy that a deranged serial killer has found acceptance? Now that’s creepy.

Lumen will die in the season finale and rightfully so.

      • flip sucks

You really shouldn’t watch this show. You don’t deserve it. And oh yeah, many people are happy that Dexter has found acceptance. I bet he’d be greeted with more love than you ever will.

      • young grandpa

yes im very happy that Dexter is LIKED….. i wish we had people in this world that did this…. would make up for our poor court system that let people walk when they do thing over and over again. i would take the job if i could but im not young anymore.

  • tvgirl48

How could they NOT renew it? It has played a huge role in making Showtime a channel ppl actually watch for great original programming, and it’s been great. For 5 seasons, it’s been consistently excellent with top-notch writing and acting. It also has the ratings and fan base to back it up and make it worth it. Sure, someday they’ll run out of ideas and the show will become stale, but until that happens, I want as much Dexter as I can get.

  • DavidJ

Not crazy about this season myself (the Lumen and Chase storylines just aren’t grabbing me for some reason), but I definitely want to see the show go on.

    • young grandpa

i was having a hard time getting into too, but like they say the last show i was like HECK YEAH this is so cool. i havent got into a series like this in a long time, ever since FARSCAPE was cancelled off sci-fi i told myself im not getting hooked again and i havent but DEXTER has me now.

  • Rob

I’d say this and last season are the best yet, and you can almost see things coming to a resolution for Dexter as a character. I could see the show wrapping up nicely in Season 6, MAYBE Season 7 if they get some excellent material involving how it all unravels.

    • Jobless

Agree with this. One of the most important things that needs to happen before the show ends is that Deb needs to find out about Dexter. Maybe they are still going to have that happen this season.

    • Heather

Season 1 & 2 were amazing as well. The writers for this show are so good! They find a way to keep it coming every season!

  • Rebecca

Jonny Lee Miller does bad…. GOOD!

    • loz

Johnny Lee Miller does a bad US accent at best, he has gotten better at it since Hackers but still very forced.

  • Justin

Why can’t Dexter be the entertainer of the year? Taylor Swift’s voice gives me lupus.

  • S

WOOHOO this is the best news ever! I really hope it gets renewed for a 6th season. Also even if the 6th season would be its last that would give them a chance to write a good season and ending. Dexter is one of the best shows I’ve watched I’ll def miss it when it does go off the air :’(
