'Boardwalk Empire' finishes strong on HBO

boardwalk-empire-finaleImage Credit: HBONot a bad run for Nucky Thompson: The season finale of Boardwalk Empire on Sunday averaged 3.3 million viewers. Combined with the 11 p.m. airing, the episode ended up drawing 4.2 million fans for the night.

For the season, Empire - which stars Steve Buscemi as Nucky – has drawn 10.5 million viewers per episode. (HBO arrived at the number by combining linear plays with DVR usage and HBO on Demand). It’s HBO’s second most popular series behind True Blood and marks the largest debut season for an HBO series in nearly a decade (since Six Feet Under in 2001).

The second season of Empire is expected to bow in late 2011.

The season finale had phenomenal writing and a nice homage to the Godfather!

  • Nate

    I miss Six Feet Under.

    • Bob

I agree, Six Feet Under was the best show!

  • RC

Ooh, maybe we’ll even get recaps next season!

    • Slezak

Recaps are stupid. Just watch the show. EW was doing recaps but I think the recapper was offended by the show’s period Political Incorrectness and stop doing them after the 3rd episode

      • RC

I obviously watch the show or I wouldn’t be interested in this story…the recaps – not like the few that were done this season, but rather insightful, intelligent ones – are sometimes helpful in realizing more about the storylines and characters. Don’t worry, though, I’ll be watching next season either way.

Recaps are always neccessary or how would people with Old Timers disase keep up with the story line?

Boardwalk Empire is good but not great. The show never got as exciting as i wanted it to be. Every promo they would show for the next episode made it seem like there was going to be so much going down and nothing ever really happened. I don’t know how many times they showed that image of Al Capone shooting someone and mixed it with all these fast images to make it seem really exciting. After the finale ended i didn’t feel like i would miss it that much while it’s gone. Although the finale did set up promising plot lines for the next season.

The writing became phenomenal after episode 7. The last few episodes were some of the best tv all year.

The pacing is the problem. It feels like the goal is to surround you with detail on the time period, but at times it feels like the shots of places, people, and events just go on forever. Scenes also seem to get way overextended that don’t deserve to be- like Jimmy and the hooker. Almost every scene with that relationship went about four times as long as it needed to. I will be back for season 2, but hope they pick up the pace a good bit.

Frank Anderson, Mad Men does the same thing with its pacing. Besides, the last few episodes, the plot really picked up.

    • Boo Radley

Disagree. I very much enjoy the way the writers are taking their time to craft a nuanced character study rather than go the lazy route of stringing the audience along from plot twist to plot twist.

  • Pam

That was a great season finale. Truly wonderful writing.

  • Ted

Boardwalk Empire season 1 was phenomenal.

  • Ned

I agree with the majority here, I thought season 1 was just great.

Best show i’ve seen in a long time– finally somthing adults could watch, everything esle on tv is for teenagers– I love the show and jimmy is my fav :=)

I wish I could have gotten into the series. Every moment Michael Pitt appears I keep thinking he is wearing diapers. That guy looks like a 5 year old!

All episodes excellent. Buscemi is one of the most underrated actors in the business. Never saw it coming- Michael Shannon and the “Baptism.” Best original character is played by Jack Huston.

Love this show!! Can’t wait for the next season.

  • Bree

I LOVE Boardwalk Empire and cannot wait for next season either but it sucks that we have to wait until late 2011!

  • Ann Gordon

Absolutely adore this series, especially Steve Buscemi. He is an outstanding actor and sexy man. Love the period, too. Not much has been done with lately with Prohibition and Sufferage. Cannot wait for next season.

  • BreTyler

Awesome show with nice writing. Couldn’t wait until the next episode each week!

  • cheryl
