Exclusive: Ed O'Neill denies saying Jane Lynch didn't deserve her Emmy

oneill-lynchImage Credit: Bob D'Amico/ABC; Miranda Penn Turin/FoxIn a statement released exclusively to EW, Modern Family star Ed O’Neill denies that he said that Glee actress Jane Lynch did not deserve the Emmy for her role as Sue Sylvester. O’Neill was quoted in a TV Guide Canada story as saying, “I love Jane, honestly I do. I’m dying to star in one of Christopher Guest’s movies alongside her, but I don’t think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part. [Sue Sylvester] is just a one-note character.” He then is quoted singing the praises of his onscreen wife, played by Sofia Vergara. Update: TV Guide Canada has apologized for misquoting O’Neill in regards to comments he made about Jane Lynch’s Emmy win for her role as Sue Sylvester on Glee.

O’Neill’s statement reads in full: “Last week I spoke to a group of journalists and one quoted me supposedly saying of Jane Lynch, ‘I don’t think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part.’ I never said those words and transcripts of the press conference attest to that fact. Of course I root for my dear friends Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen (and all of my colleagues on our show) at Emmy time, but I absolutely never said, nor do I believe that Jane — whom I think is an enormous talent — was undeserving of the award. I reached out to her yesterday to ensure she knew I’d been misquoted but I wanted to clear this up publicly as well.” (A rep for Lynch told E! Online the actress had “let [the issue] go.”) TV Guide Canada did not respond to a request for comment at the time of this posting.

I sure hope this is true. I like both of them.

    • Larry David

I bet the Gays and Lesbians got to Ed O’Neill and made him take back his words. Truth is Jane Lynch is a one note actress on that show. All she does is criticize and say one liners that are meant to be witty and clever but are idiotic and moronic, just like the viewers of ‘Glee’ who eat whatever the show throws at them. I though Ed was a man but he’s a coward like most of the people in this country. These people make me sick, and these Gays and Lesbians are making me thirsty.

      • Big Man

Larry David, I love you. And cannot wait for you to enter me again. Damn, that was good.

      • Wottadoosh

“All she does is criticize and say one liners that are meant to be witty and clever but are idiotic and moronic,… ”

        You’re projecting again, Larry.

      • Cris

Of course, it’s also possible, Larry, that he actually NEVER ACTUALLY SAID IT. If it was a press conference there are transcripts, then someone will be able to prove one way or the other. Fairly stupid move to try to take back something that’s readily available on a transcript (and likely on a reporter’s recording device as well).

I totally believe it. You know how this so called “journalist” make up stories all the time.

    • Kebert Xela

This is a truly ignorant comment.

      Journalists rarely make up stories.

Want proof? You came here, read this and believed it.

If all journalists were as suspect as you say, you wouldn’t be bothering reading this article.

      • Wottadoosh

If it is written, it must be so, then. Right?
It is nice of you to warn people about the content of your message in the first line, very decent of you.

      • Kebert Xela

@Wottadoosh. You obviously don’t have a clue how the journalistic world works.

Journalists (note: not opinion writers or talking heads. There is a difference) who just make up stories don’t work very long.

Try using your brain instead of reflexively recting some meme you’ve heard.

      • Wottadoosh

Try going to an actual news site and not some entertainment one , for starters, then you wouldn’t come across as some moronic troll.

    • Kebert Xela

You have some proof of the made up stories, right?

You wouldn’t be just talking out your a$$, right?

      • Wottadoosh

Wow, you have to be a troll, no one can be that stupid.

  • Sarcastic Pr*ck

Wow! Did anyone see this coming?

  • Jason

Even if he had said it, he is allowed to have his own opinion.

    • Jaymii

Indeed, but its still a bit rude and best to keep it quiet. Kurt Sutter, seemingly, has realised now that his Emmy rant was embarrassing.

  • Brenda Barrett

The bottom line is that Jane is awesome and very talented and we all know it!

  • Dave

    who cares?

  • Kat

Those damn Canadians. Making up stuff.

    • patrick mathieu

There is nothing wrong with being Canadian. Talk about making stuff up, what about the fake story about how the twin towers went down, the american govenrment did that to its own people, so dont talk to me about telling stories…. ignorant american junky!!!

  • bruno

title should read ed o’neil tries to save face for being a douche, makes up misquoted story, people roll eyes…

    • Jason C.

Really, what he said was that bad? I don’t recall in there where he said that Jane is a bad actress, and while she does a great job with the part, Sue doesn’t deviate much from wanting to take control of everything. I’d say that Jane earned the Emmy more on her body of work than anything.

But to say that he made up misquoted story when it states right there that the transcripts stated he didn’t say that, well, maybe you should learn to read before you decide to assume.

      • Hannah

I thought he meant that she deserved accolades for her work, but of all the roles she’s had – Sue Sylvester is the least challenging. Which, I agree! Of all the roles Jane Lynch has had, Sue is my least favorite!

But that’s like saying “Of all the Fabrege Eggs I have, this one is my least favorite!” They’re still all Fabrege Eggs.

    • Linney17

Yeah, except he says you can read the transcripts, which support that it was never said. Learn to read.

    • Mark

      How do those words taste?

  • alm034

He went on to say, “It’s BS, I did not insult her, I DID NAHHHT! Oh hi Mark.”

    • Jeff

Jane, you are TEARING ME APART!!

      • Mary Alesia

I am THROUGH with this WORRLLD

  • anna

Why would they make it up? He’s just trying to save face.

    • Jason C.

Why would they make it up? Have you seen how many entertainment news publications have picked up the story? Of course that’s driven up their viewership, that’s not enough reason to make it up?

  • I don’t believe him. Unless there’s no audio to support it, I think he just stuck his foot in his mouth and is doing damage control. He’s allowed to his opinion, but I’m allowed to think he’s an a$$ for the way he expresses it. And regarding the quote, neither Jane nor Sofia play multi-dimensional characters, so glass house, stones, etc.

    • Jason C.

So if the transcripts show that he didn’t say it then you refuse to believe the transcripts?

  • Jay

    LOL… this is just funny.
Whether or not he actually said it doesn’t matter. It was TRUE.

The “Sue” character on Glee is very one-sided and hardly a good example something worthy of winning an award.

Dont take this as a shot at Jane Lynch, because she is terrific at playing the part she is given. My argument is that the character itself is simply, well… shallow

  • Matt

The only ones who seem to care are the entertainment magazines wanting to blow this “issue” up. Jane’s reps say they don’t care. Why don’t you?

  • efrain

Regardless of what happened sofia should win next year

  • erika

who knows what to believe? journalists do make up rumors most of the time, but.. i don’t know. whatever. it shouldn’t disrupt anyone’s lives.
