Image Credit: Karen NealThe Closer is closing. TNT has decided that season 7 of the popular police drama will be its last. Kyra Sedgwick, who won an Emmy playing the determined L.A. cop, Brenda Leigh Johnson, made the decision, according to a statement from the network. “I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we’ve created on The Closer,” Sedgwick said in a statement. “I will always be grateful to James Duff for his love and friendship, as well as for creating such a rich and complex character who I have loved living with year after year…. I want to thank … the incredible fans … for all of their unwavering support over the last seven years.”
Peter Roth, president of Warner Bros. Television, added, “The series has literally changed the face and course of both TNT and Warner Bros. Television, and we will always be grateful for all that [Kyra] has contributed toward that success.” Production of the 15-episode final season will begin next spring.

Since when were female law enforcement officials the hottest commodity on TV?

Too bad! I guess all good things must come to an end
Noooooo! I love this show! One of the things I love about it is that all of the main characters are individual and distinct, not just the typical sidekicks you see that could be interchangeable with every other show. Maybe a spin-off with Lts. Flynn and Provenza being private detectives, a la The Rockford Files? Or Sanchez and Tang teaching cadets at the police academy how to figure out and re-enact crimes?
I’d definitely tune in to a Provenza/Flynn spin off. Their chemistry is fantastic. That Dodgers game/murder in Provenza’s garage is still one of my top five favorite Closer ep!
Or what about Capt. Rayder taking over i am starting to like Mary McDonnell…or better yet the delicious Detective Gabriel taking over yummy! LOL
Me too, and my both my daughters love the show as well. Those two have to go out on their own!
that dodgers game murder was one of my favorites also. i wish all the cast a great future in what ever they choose to do. i am sure that another series will come out of this show for sure.
Me2, Bella!!!! I LOVE this show!!
Let me add my “oh nooooo” to yours, Bella. My husband and I LOVE this show!
This just broke my heart in 17 places.
Boo! Hiss!
Are the current episodes the beginning of season six? It’s hard to tell with these short, twice-a-year half seasons.
Mine too. And now I need some cupcakes. I will certainly miss Brenda Leigh.
Another female-lead drama bites the dust…. =( sad.
I think you should be fine.seems like this past tv season networks were really trying to make shows with femaels leads.
It’s not “cancelled”, it is bowing out with dignity.
This stinks! The Closer is a great show that defined cable dramas. I wonder why it’s being stopped after next season? Money? Ratings? It’s a shame this show is cancelled, while many terrible programs are still on.
It’s not cancelled. Kyra Sedgwick doesn’t want to do it anymore.
I guess I can see how Kyra Sedgwick must be tired of speaking in a Georgia accent all the time. But I will miss this show. One of my favorites. Still, the episodes have been getting kind of repetitive lately. Probably not a bad call to end it now.
Here! Here! The 2009 season with the story line involving her niece was terrible. This year was so much better. I want her to go out on top.
As a Georgia resident, I can assure you that accent has little to no basis in reality. There are a lot of accents around here, but hers is, um, unique to the character. Painfully unique.
I feel your pain. I’ve lived in Texas for most of my life, and Jenny Wade’s “Texas” accent on The Good Guys had me yelling at the screen. “NOBODY HERE SOUNDS LIKE THAT, GET AN ACCENT COACH!”
Younique fer shurrrr.
Georgia accent? I don’t think so. More like a made for tv Southern drawwwwl…
Take heart, Closer fans. This means that your show will end while you still love it and it’s still producing quality work. That’s a much better legacy than overstaying its welcome. Besides, it airs on TNT, which means enternal reruns!
As sad as I am to hear them make this announcement, I’m glad that they’re goin to be able to end the way they want into instead of spiraling into mediocrity.
I agree.
Who needs re-runs when you have all the seasons on dvd! I often have Closer marathons. I will miss Brenda, Fritz and everyone in the PMS (Priority Murder Squad as it was first called).
Sorry, but the eppys haven’t gotten stale yet. I can’t help but think that this show would have gone out on top no matter when they deceided to end it.
I love this show. Why do all the good ones get cancelled????
It did not get cancelled. Kyra just decided to end it.
I sure hope they replace the show with that Kardashian show. That’s Talent with a capital Y.
It is sad the show will be no more I did very much enjoy the show.
Her accent on the show was awful. I grew up in the south and never knew anyone who talked that way. Next time don’t take a job that requires an accent Kyra.
I am from the south and I know a few someones that speak exactly like her character. The are a Hoot!
She sounds just like a few members of my family.
I’m surprised it is ending since it seems to be a consistent ratings winner. However, it’s probably the time for renegotiation of contracts, and I’m sure Kyra would not be cheap the next time round…
Why? Why close done the Closer. I just saw Kyra on The View this last week. She is so great! Not sure why TNT would cancel this highly acclaimed show, especially with the tv landscape the way it is right now, with very few shows worth watching on!
Sounds like they didn’t cancel it, sockgal, but that Kyra made the decision to move on and do something different. Obviously they can’t have the show without her, so they had no choice but to end it.
They didn’t cancel it. Kyra chose to end its run.
Seven season is a pretty good run. The Closer is a delightful procedural, the kind that has provided good quality stories throughout its ENTIRE run. It should end while it’s still on top, with great ratings and praise for Kyra’s performance.
Always leave them wanting more. Smart move.
agree
Also agree. My favorite show, and I’m totally bummed. But I would rather it end on a high note than stay past it’s prime like most do.
Well, seven seasons is a great run and Kyra has an Emmy from it so it’s not that tragic. At least we have some great memories.
