'Dexter' producer teases Sunday's finale 'The Big One,' plus an exclusive clip from the episode!

Dexter-finale-Hall_320.jpg One episode. That’s all that stands between you and The End…. of Dexter‘s fifth season, that is. Questions loom over Showtime’s serial killer drama: [Spoiler Alert: Stop reading if you haven't seen episode 11] Will the discovery of Liddy’s body prove more dangerous for Dexter (Michael C. Hall) or Quinn (Desmond Harrington)–or both? Will Dexter track down Lumen (Julia Stiles) before it’s too late? What does Jordan (Jonny Lee Miller) have in store for Dexter? Is this the episode that Harrison’s nanny (Maria Doyle Kennedy) is finally revealed to be plotting something sinister? On Sunday night, answers will flow. Right now, though, you can play the guessing game with the aid of some teasers. Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton gives you, EW.com reader, four clues to fire the imagination about the finale, titled “The Big One.” Craving a sneak peak in video form? Check out an exclusive clip from the finale after the jump.

No. 1: “Has Dexter found true love? Is this his soulmate? Our fans know these decisions are tied to the yearlong theme, and it’s Dexter atoning for his part in Rita’s death. Has he atoned enough in helping this woman and coming to terms with his responsibility? Will that satisfy the gods? Lumen is the key element in bringing around Dexter’s atonement, but the big question is: Is there something left he’s going to have to sacrifice to achieve atonement?”

No. 2: “Remember in episode 11 when Liddy’s blood dripped on Quinn’s shoes? Well, who is the Miami Metro blood expert who’s going to be called upon to see whose blood that is? That’s going to be a very interesting conundrum for Dexter. Part of why Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) understands what these women went through is that she went through this in season 1, when Rudy captured her and was going to kill her, and Dexter had to kill Rudy to protect Deb. So Dexter’s like, ‘Do I want my sister involved with another bad guy?’  To Dexter, Quinn is a bad guy. But we’ve evolved Quinn, and I think to a lot of our audience Quinn has stepped up and become someone worthy of Deb. So Dexter is trying to weigh, ‘Is this good for Deb?’ and the no. 1 rule of the Code: ‘Do not get caught.’”

No. 3 “Deb has become this dogged detective. Like a dog with a bone in her mouth, she’s not going to let go–she’s going to follow this vigilante killer theory right to the end. So as the loose pieces of this game start fitting together, how close is Deb going to get to finding out who is ’13′? And who is this man helping her?”

No. 4: “Jordan’s a complete control freak and he has been pushed to the point of losing his control by Dexter and Lumen. So it comes down to: Is Lumen going to be able not to succumb to being a victim again? When we first met her, she was a victim and slowly she became an avenging angel as Dexter gave her strength. But she’s alone with Jordan, who’s going to bring her back to the site of the horror. So how mentally strong can a victim of that kind of abuse be? Is she going to survive long enough for Dexter to find her?”

Okay, Dexperts, it’s time to lock in those finale predictions. Start spilling.

SUNDAY UPDATE: Now that the episode has aired in some time zones, please remember the comment boards will include spoilers. If you’re on the west coast and you don’t want to know anything more about the finale, avoid the board.

I cant wait for tomorrows finale. I think that when the show wraps up, that Deb will be the one that either brings Dexter down or lets him go. She is one persistent cop. But, i hope that Lumen makes it to next season, she is my favorite Dexter girlfriend so far. Im not really a fan of Quinn, so he can go as far as im concerned. So far this season is my favorite. Cant wait for the next season already.

    • Bob

I’d like to see Deb find out about Dexter so next season could be her dealing with that, either for or against. And then end the series.

    • GB

Just want to say that this has been my theory since the 1st season and i totally agree with u. deb will kill dexter when this show ends. fact.

      • Michael

No, the series will end with Deb’s choice as to whether or not to accept what Dexter is or turn him in. She won’t kill him, evidenced by the fact that she let the “vigilante couple” get away.

  • jj

    NO….the last episode!

At least I have reruns of Breaking Bad. When is the new season of Dexter? Anyone? Anyone?

    • Cara

I know it went by so fast! I’m guessing the new season starts next September like always.

      I love Breaking Bad too!

    • dexalicious

New season will be in September 2011. Love Breaking Bad, intense show.

  • Jules

two things I know for sure… Tomorrow’s finale will not be long enough and the wait for next season will be too long. I think Dexter is the best show on TV right now..

  • Danny

The next season was confirmed on wikipedia, it might have the date on it.

I really hope Lumen and Dexter survive to become a pack hunter couple for next season, i love that dynamic.

  • Danny

Oh. And if Dexter dies and becomes Lumens “harry” i will be pissed.
Ive also notice how Harry has been seen less and less since lumen.

    • jodipo

uh, thats the dumbest theory ever. They cannot kill of the title character with a full season to go

  • tvwatcher

two things: first, there were no “clues.” Just four questions which had already been asked in previous articles. second, since when did a season consist of 8 or 10 episodes? whatever happened to a full year of shows? these cable channels are too cheap.

    • Shotgun Shogun

Umm its twelve episodes, and it has been like that for the past four seasons of Dexter. I don’t know why this would surprise anyone.

    • Mole

It’s 12, and most cable shows run 13 episode seasons. Most people actually prefer this for several reasons – 1) Seasonal programing. Shows don’t have to get axed just to “make room” for other pilots next year. 2) Uninterrupted airing – because of this schedule, they can air a season straight through without all those annoying breaks. 3) No filler episodes. The writers don’t have to figure out how to filibuster the season and back-burn the main plot to make it last 22 episodes. That’s why, with occasional exception, serial shows work FAR better on cable.

  • Danny

This season has had 12 episodes…. just like the other seasons.

  • richard

I like that showtime produces a limited number of high quality episodes instead of many episodes that may not all be great like some broadcast shows that try to do 22-25 episodes a year.

  • Pat Nance

We have been having Sunday dinner with Dexter for the past two seasons. This series has been the most interesting and suspenseful series I have ever followed. I am most impressed by the emotional evolution of Dexter. He was able to tell Aster that he loved her and mean it. He seems to love Lumen as well, a huge achievement for an antisocial. I think that Dexter will not allow Quinn to take the fall for Liddy, but Quinn will remain suspicious. If Dexter could implicate Emily in the vigilante murders, this will also implicate Jason. Jason will target Dexter’s vulnerablities – his family, maybe Harrison and nanny. I hope Lumen survives and returns to Dexter, but I know that I will end up surprised.

  • tracy bluth

gaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! that’s all i can say. in a perfect world lumen would live, dexter would somehow manage not to get caught, and deb would FINALLY get her due- i mean, really, she is by far the best detective on the force. it’s probably wrong that i’m more invested in dexter than studying for finals, but whatever.

    • j

Amen, sister. Not only is Deb the best detective on the force, she is the ONLY ONE WITH BRAIN CELLS. She needs to get more credit.

      • to Tracy and j

A few DULL KNIVES in your drawers…that’s clear. If Deb is Miami’s best detective, it’s no wonder they can never solve anything. Because you have no memory, short-term or otherwise, here are some examples of her incompetence: she was engaged to the serial killer the entire police force was looking for, she saw a footprint outside Alex’s house but didn’t investigate – Masuka did, the day after! You two are clueless.

    • Liz

It probably is pretty bad, but I too am more interested in Dexter than I am in studying for exams (big one tomorrow, ugh)

    • Lindsay

I hear ya!! I have a final tomorrow and could barely study because I was so anxious for the season finale!

  • Kommenter

The series was renewed. Wouldn’t have surprised me if they had two endings available: One, Lumen defies Jordan and gets her “strong, recovered woman” nod, but is mortally wounded and Dexter gets there in time to kill Jordan just before she dies. Two, she survives, they kill Jordan, and they start next season as boyfriend and girlfriend. Which I think would make for a much more interesting series, but is entirely dependent on whether they had the foresight to lock in Stiles. Which, considering they weren’t certain to be renewed, seems unlikely.

  • tostina

They can pin it on that other dead blonde girl (who helped Jordan) and Jordan himself – he would have killed them off if it jeopardized his freedom!

  • tom

here it is. Quin gets blamed and goes down for the murder. His rants about Dexter are ignored due to his obsession with Dexter. Lumen gets killed and Dexter avenges her death.

  • lacey

Dexter is the BEST show on TV! Love Dexter with Lumen. This show really needs to be 22 episodes per season…PLEASEEEE

  • Joey

I don’t think they kill off Lumen, not two seasons in a row like that, but I’ve been wrong plenty of times watching this show. My theory is Quinn takes the blame for Liddy in order to satisfy Deb despite what he knows about Dexter, and Deb catches Lumen murdering Jordan. Maybe..
