'Glee': Gwyneth Paltrow says she will return as Holly Holliday

Gwyneth Paltrow’s guest-appearance this fall on Glee was without a doubt one of the highlights of the Fox hit’s second season. So it’s not entirely surprising that the Oscar winner is saying she will return to the series. At this past weekend’s junket for her new film Country Strong, Paltrow told Access Hollywood that she will reprise her role as substitute teacher Holly Holliday. Says Paltrow, “I’m going to do one more. I signed up for two…so I’m excited!” Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy told EW in November that both he and Paltrow were hoping she would be able to return. Said Murphy, “I’d love for her to come back and she’d said she would love to do it.”

I’m usually leading the charge in saying that “Glee” has too many big-name guest stars, and they should focus on the core cast (which is all still true)…but Paltrow was a pleasant surprise, and I’m looking forward to seeing her back on the show.

    • Jackie

She really was a lot of fun to watch, and she looked like she was having a good time. I also thought she and Matthew Morrison had GREAT chemistry.

      • Flip

Out of all the women he’s worked with on Glee, Matthew Morrison has the best chem with Jessalyn Gilsig.

      • Brenda Barrett

@Flip — Your glowing posts about JG indicate that she clearly gives you orgasms, but surely you are aware that virtually all viewers hate the character of Terri? MM has much more chemistry with Jayma and Gwyneth.

      • Boo Radley

I thought so too re: MM and GP. It’s too bad she won’t be a regular.

    • whereisit

I agree this show is way over, put a fork in it.

      • davey

who exactly are you agreeing with?

    • Brenda Barrett

Her ep was my favorite of the year by a mile. GP was fantastic, most of the songs were great, there were funny moments, and most of the cast was featured — I loved it, and look forward to round two.

      • anya

I agree, her episode was by far the best one so far this season. Her character was fun, it’d be great to have her on again!

    • Flip

Really? Her episode was really, really bad. I usually like GP but hated her on Glee.

    • Nathan

I’ll buy her as a substitute teacher over a substance addicted aging country singer any day, Country Strong looks so horrible I almost can’t believe it.

    • Lisa

I liked her too, I just hope next time they don’t make the focus of the episode. Yeah, I know she’s the first movie star they’ve had on, the biggest name, but now that they’ve had her on once and got a better response than expected, maybe this time they’ll have her share the screen more.

    • Ty

I’m excited to hear she’s coming back. I wasn’t a fan of hers at all but her appearance on glee was a pleasant surprise. Maybe a lil romance for her and Will…he needs to get some and stick it to Emma

  • suebrody

I agree. Holly was such a fun character(Mr. Shuester’s ex, OTOH, was not), and I LOVED Forget You.

    • Flip

Terri is awesome! I only want GP back if she and Jessalyn Gilsig share scenes again.

    • Irish

agreed. I hate when Terri shows up in an episode.

      • Flip

I hate when YOU show up on these comments.

  • Jay

Great! Her episode she was in was one of the only ones I actually really liked this season.

    • JKH

I agree. That Mary Todd Lincoln rant was my favorite Glee moment this season.

      • KarlHall

“She was bipolar. Meaning, THIS CAN’T BE MY BABY, I DON’T LOVE IT! Or, that TEA KETTLE IS OUT TO KILL ME!!!”

  • Alex

Yeah! So excited to have her come back!

  • GS

    • taree johnson

I would have to agree with the person who said” Gross”. I really don’t understand why Gwyneth Paltrow is popular, watching her is like watching paint dry… to each it’s own I guess!

  • reason

    “Hoarders and red wine! Buzzzed”
Paltrow was great and got me to watch Glee for the first time, she is radiant. Glee has not completely won me over yet, but I will be watching when she returns and continue to listen to “Forget You” an unhealthy amount.

  • Cara

Eh…I didn’t really like her episode that much because…well…it was basically all about her. The other characters had little side plots, but they were in the background compared to all of her stuff. The show is supposed to be about the kids…not “OMG IT’S GWYNETH”

    • Mr. Holloway

I actually liked Paltrow in the ep, but that’s a very fair critique of the episode overall.

  • Ben

Oh hell no…she sucked the first time around. Once was enough. Bring back Kristin Chenoweth instead.

    • Cat

    • Shannon

The character was unnecessary and brought nothing to the show.

    • Brenda Barrett

I disagree. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Kristin, but her Glee eps were some of my least favorite, as they were centered entirely around her and we saw little of the regular cast. The GP ep integrated the whole cast, plus her character — a substitute — just felt more organic and realistic than Kristin’s caricature of a character. But Cheno is awesome.

  • Lacey

I hope she returns and finally gets Will back in the saddle again, so to speak. That man is in some serious need of some strange. He is bordering on pathetic.

    • Mr. Holloway

      “Bordering” on pathetic?

So far, he’s made his glee club put together a stage production of a cult film, just so he could try to steal back his old girlfriend (who’s in a relationship). Also, apparently the only reason he didn’t spend Christmas Eve alone was because his nemesis arranged an impromptu get-together.

I think he moved into pathetic on a while ago and has settled in quite nicely.

      • TJ

I adore Will, but have to agree with everything in this post. Get the man a new girlfriend and let him move on, jeez!

      • Angie L

I agree as well! His crush/love/whatever for the counselor is tiresome. She’s so boring! He needs to get over it and get a new woman.

  • Katja

I thought she actually was a good addition to the show, so I’m kind of looking forward to her return though. No more Cee Lo, though. I might be the only one, but I thought her version of “F— You” was NOT great and would have been lame even if they hadn’t done the lyric change. But the character was kind of interesting!

  • Scott

Dislike! I hated the episode she starred in. It was dreadful!

  • Shannon

How about you use the characters you already have? What a novel idea…

  • jfms777

But isn’t it sad that the REGULAR cast’s roles are so spotty this season? Lea Michele is wasted, and a few of the kids are being much less used this season. Gwyneth was great, but how about the regulars?

  • AN

Lea Michele is fantastic, but I am over her getting a solo every week. Showcase some of the other amazing talent, like Mercedes or Quinn or even Tina.

    • Irish

Exactly! I think Lea has a great voice and all, but it’d be nice to hear from some oth the others, like Puck and Artie. The sectionals episode, the the horrible attitude, really made me dislike the character Rachel. It’s the “Glee Club”, not the “Rachel Club with her backup singers”.

      • Molly

Artie’s had a bunch of solos and storylines this season. I do wish the solos were spread around more in general, but Rachel’s gotten a lot less screentime this season, and 90% of it has been about Finn. I’m pretty sure Lea gets the solos even though Rachel doesn’t get the plotlines cause of her contract. Less solos and more plot for Rachel please!

  • suebrody

You have to admit that a lot of the Glee Club actually participated in the episode. (Though once again Mercedes was barely seen.) As long as you can integrate a guest star into the episode in a fun way, and Glee doesn’t have one every week, I’m good with it.

    • Flip

“Barely seen”? Uhh, Mercedes isn’t exactly a stick….

    • Darckash

Actually, didn’t that episode have the whole “tots rebellion” arc to it? That was pretty much all about Mercedes.
