'Medium' scoop: Creator promises tearful goodbye

mediumImage Credit: Mitchell Haaseth/NBCMedium creator Glenn Gordon Caron promises “complete closure” when the CBS drama starring Patricia Arquette ends its seven-year run on Jan. 21. He also offers this exclusive teaser about the final episode, which began taping last week in Manhattan Beach, Calif: “It takes place in the present, it takes place seven years after that, and then it takes place 40 years after that.”

The entire ensemble will participate, but don’t look for surprise visits. “It’s not like Captain Push is coming back or anything,” says Caron, in reference to Arliss Howard’s character who was the first member of law enforcement to learn that Arquette’s character could foresee events and talk to the dead.

Something things had to occur in the finale, however. “We have to be intelligent, and we have to startle.”

Will he make fans sad, too? “I know for certain that people will tear up,” says Caron.

The creator confirmed via Facebook last month that CBS canned the drama. The network cut the episodic order on Medium from 22 to 13 in October. The drama averages 7.1 million viewers.

I so hate that this show is being cancelled. As long as none of the principal characters are killed off, I think I can keep it together. I wonder if they’ve thought about a spin-off of some sort; maybe with the oldest girl Ariel.

    • Emily

I think 40 years into the future Joe will pass away, but his ghost will remain with Alison until she passes. They will be together forever.

      • LilyBop

I like that idea, Emily. I’d like it better if Joe died being a hero, saving a member of his family.

I didn’t know the ending was coming until I saw the show last night. I loved this show and wish it washn’t canced. The ending, although odd in it’s way was so well written (as usual.) I too would have prefered the husband and wife died together, but the ending was very touching. So sad that my favorite couple on tv had to live so many years apart. As someone who doesn’t tend to be emotionl, I’m almost grieving the loss of this show. I could have watched it forever.

CONTACT CBS and tell them. If we all contact them, maybe they will change their minds. Here is the link, make it a “complaint” when you fill out the form. http://www.cbs.com/info/user_services/fb_global_form.php

I don’t even watch “Medium”, but the show was pulling in 7.1 million on Friday night? What more did CBS want?

    • cheese

      This.

    • Kalie

      I agree. I just don’t get it.

    • Brooke

Younger demos. The 18-49 category was lacking, and that’s what advertisers pay for.

  • stu

glenn will be writing her sexy, crazy actor bro (David ) in. he will shoot sis head off.

A spin-off with Ariel would be great- why doesn’t that actress get more attention? She is great. Will be so sad to see Medium go.

    • christy

I think Ariel(the actress) is away at college for real and that’s why she hasn’t been on the show lately

  • John

I dont watch this show but WHY WHY WHY are they cancelling it when it gets 7 million viewers on a FRIDAY?? Isnt that really good for a friday night? They’ll just replace it with some crap show that no one will watch.

    • Carrie

      Exactly.

  • WTF?

I’ve been expecting something ominous since Joe’s mother (‘s ghost) said that she could see the future, and there would be darkness. I never thought about a spinoff with Sofia Vassilieva, but she’s a great young actress. Since we know her character has the same gifts as her mother, it could be intriguing to see her utilize them in that Ivy League college setting.

I will miss Medium a lot. It’s been a solid show with great writing, but in terms of the hard-to-predict mysteries as well as the remarkably well-done family scenes. I seriously love Joe! I’m happy that the show will have a well-planned finale though–not every show is that fortunate, but Medium definitely deserves it. Imagine if CBS hadn’t picked up the show, and it had ended when Allison was in the coma! (Another brilliant decision by the powers-that-be at NBC, LOL.)

    • Zoe

      Sorry, edit: “both in terms…”

      • Fido

let me echo your pleasedness at them giving us “a well-planned finale”, it would be nice if networks let more of their cancelled series give their devoted viewers such a thang :)

    • Rack

Its ironic isn’t it that the show’s current ratings of 7 million is where NBC wishes it could average now for a scripted show?

    • Mary Hamilton

COMPLAIN TO CBS, TELL THEM NOT TO CANCEL THE SHOW:

  • Flip

    “Something things”?

  • Laurin

I hate that it is going off the air… How many other shows average 7 million viewers?

  • Kathy

Joe will die and since all the woman in the family have the giftr to talk to the dead, he will come back and visit often. Life “The Time Traveler”. You cry, but it’s not so bad if they can visit in the afterlife. I will miss their great family life. They don’t make anyone appear stupid. They really love each other.

  • Vince

Right good shows they cancel and junk like UNDERCOVER BOSS they keep.

    • Chuck

Amen to that. Who could believe that some cameraman could get candid video and sound, up-close, and the participants couldn’t notice him? Crap.

  • Heather

Hate that Medium is going to be canceled. But why all this talk about Ariel? Bridgette has always been my favorite since my first episode!

    • KRS

LOVE Bridgette! And we love this show. We have been faithful viewers since the beginning. However you feel about “psychics” the relationships between Joe, Allison and their girls always rang true.

  • Lynn

I always loved this show and watched it every Monday night. Then they had to switch it to Friday and I couldn’t watch it anymore due to work shifts. Try shifting it back to Monday or any night but Friday and see where it goes…

  • dhppy

Oh, why did he have to go and mention Captain Push? He was fun. It would be nice to see him again. I hope the show stays true to it’s style in the finale and doesn’t give in to sensationalism at the expense of the characters.

  • Jen

Medium has been fantastic the last few seasons. It’s one of the few shows I watch. I’m sad to see it go…
