'Desperate Housewives': Time for raises on Wisteria Lane?

desperate-housewivesImage Credit: Ron Tom/ABCA raise for Lynette, Bree, Susan and Gabrielle may not top your Christmas list this year but for the stars of ABC’s Desperate Housewives, it certainly would help to ring in the new year. Contracts for Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Eva Longoria expire at the end of the season, and EW has learned that renegotiations have already begun.

ABC hasn’t officially said whether the drama will return for an eighth year, but all signs indicate that it’s a sure thing: Creator Marc Cherry is committed to Wisteria Lane through 2013 and the drama remains the most-watched series on Sundays (12.9 million). It’s also the No. 1 non-sports program on the night in adults 18-49 (4.3 rating/10 share) and dominates its time period across all key female demographics. The show also commands a hefty ad rate that’s well north of $200,000 per 30-second spot and ranks among TV’s highest-rated scripted series among adults in homes with an $100,000-plus annual income.

Since the four stars earn the same amount — reports peg their salaries at roughly $400,000 each per episode, which makes them among TV’s highest paid stars — its likely the women will negotiate together. From what EW hears, the women continue to get along well and are dedicated to seeing through Cherry’s vision. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, Cherry’s eager to find new hits for the Alphabet network. He has a script in development dubbed Hallelujah that would center on a small town “which finds itself being torn apart by the forces of good and evil,” according to Variety . Things improve, however, when a stranger comes to town “looking to bring justice, peace, and a little bit of faith” to the residents. The project is set up at ABC Studios through Cherry’s huge overall deal.

Desperate Housewives needs to end. I stopped watching last season when I couldn’t even remember what happened 5 minutes after it aired

    • LOL

I stopped watching this crap about 3 years ago for the same reason.

      • So

Why the heck are either one of you waiting your time….and ours….by posting here??!!!

        LOSERS!!!!

      • @ So

It isn’t only diehard suckers, I mean fans, that are allowed to post here.

    • Mike

Well then, if YOU stopped watching, absolutely – cancel it! What else have you stopped watching or perhaps, never started watching, so we can ask them to shut down production?

      • Shurly

        LMAO!

      • Agustin

        Brilliant comment!

  • yhrhd

This season has been one of the better ones, so I think they should end on a high note. End it while people still care. I know pretty much everyone says “What? Dh? Who watches that anymore?”, but everyone seems to know what happened on the last episode. So people do still watch.

  • Just me

I still watch, but I think this show has really run its course and should end.

  • john

I watch for “Gabby!” She’s the best character on there!

    • H.S.

Sorry, but that would be the reason NOT to watch it. How is she the best character when she’s on every 3 weeks or so, and for about 10 minutes? YUK. It’s pretty sad how they’re probably keeping her morbidly obese for the character too. Real healthy.

      • George

Morbidly obese? Her character had about 10 extra lbs one season. Someone must be jealous or bitter. Longoria has grown leaps and bounds as an actress. She’s no Streep or anything, but we’re not talking about really deep TV. This is camp, obviously.

      • Shay

        I think u r referring to the Gabby”s daughter?

    • Carla

      Really? Seriously? yikes

  • Paul

I was really hoping this would be the last season. It’s been on a slow decline for awhile now, and while the show still has its moments, they are slowly becoming few and far inbetween. It’s time to wrap it up, ladies.

    • LiLa

You are aware that you can stop watching anytime you’d like? A lot of us are still enjoying our Sunday evenings with the housewives.

  • mikey

The fall finale was the best episode of the show in ages!

  • cici217

With the ratings in decline and the fact that ABC gave up trying to rerun it because it bombed so badly, I’m surprised they could get more than $400k an ep. The actresses should be thankful that ABC’s schedule is in such disrepair these days

    • George

Wow how deluded. The reruns bring in fine ratings on Lifetime. Get a grip.

    • reason

has anyone who commented here actually read it!?! IT IS THE HIGHEST RATED SHOW ON SUNDAY NIGHTS! If you don’t like it, fine; but don’t act like a lot don’t.

  • Danny

Gotta love the haters who post their bitter comments, LOL.

I look forward to “Desperate Housewives” each and every Sunday night. I haven’t missed an episode in seven seasons! I hope they all come back, and Vanessa Williams has sufficiently filled the vacancy left by gone-but-not-forgotten Nicollette Sheridan.

Actuall y i have 2 disagree with the previous comments that people are STILL in love with it and thats why it has HUGE ratings even bigger than glee and greys and this season has been amazing and better than the last half of 6 and things are looking 4 the better. Also every1 i know is OBSESSED with it and loves it and even when DH is at its worst its still better than most tv shows especially the im sorry but the completely overrated only for people who like 2 relive or live in the drivel’60s show thats called MAD MEN! And i know this is out of the subject but it should have NOT won the Drama Emmy it shoul have gone to Breaking Bad or lost which are compelling dramas i also would put DH up there with breaking bad or dexter on the basis of entertainmet and when DH really gets good it even better than those like basically every scene that has HSM in it ;) Finally that is njust my opinion and MANY others that i know but ur welcome 2 disagree with me.;)

  • Jon

I agree with Mikey– this finale was one of the best in a very very long time. I still love the show and it is still in the top 20 of shows. I also love the addition of Vanessa Williams. I say keep it on for at least another year or two.

  • M.T

Oh yeah i also went of topic i think they deserve WAY more than $400 thousand! I know thats alot put i think they deserve 1million+ each. They especially deserve more than what charlie sheen gets! lol

    • reason

that puts it in perspective for sure!

  • Mark G

These people all need to be drug-tested! It needs to end…why?…cause it’s been on a long time? Aging stars? This show still rocks, and, as anybody who saw last weeks episode will attest, still has the power to thrill and entertain. Keep up the good work, ladies (and Marc!)!

  • Robbie

The quality is still there but the hype is gone.

Whatever the final year is, I’d like them to circle back. Kill one of the main 4 off at the end of Season 7, then have that character narrate the mystery for Season 8.

  • Lisa Simpson

This season sucks. Please just put this show out of its misery and these b itches to sleep.

    • Damin

This season doesn’t suck, that’s a bit harsh.

    • yeahright

Maybe you suck, ever think of that?

  • Ingmar

This show is still filled with more quality than many other shows. Besides the 4 ladies still act greatly so I don’t see why the show should get the axe. Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives are the 2 veteran shows of ABC and still they have some of the best ratings on the network so that says something. I think the show wil last 8-9 years, just like Grey’s Anatomy. ABC lacks new drama shows so till some new hit show comes to ABC I don’t see ABC dumping Desperate or Grey’s Anatomy.
