'X Factor' under investigation for sexy performances from Christina Aguilera and Rihanna

Categories: Music

Christina-Aguilera-X-FactorImage Credit: Ken McKay/TalkbackThames/Rex/Rex USABritish talent show The X Factor may have to pay for an episode that has made many wonder whether the show should be renamed The XXX Factor. On Dec. 11, the show featured so-called racy performances from both Christina Aguilera and Rihanna — and now Ofcom (think of it as Britain’s version of the FCC) has launched an investigation, according to The Guardian.

Following suggestive numbers from Aguilera — promoting Burlesque — and Rihanna, whose performance of “What’s My Name” involved a tame striptease, more than 4,000 viewers complained, claiming that the racy performances should not have been aired at such an early hour. (X Factor ran in a primetime slot from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; the episode attracted 14 million viewers) A total of 2,750 viewers complained to Ofcom, while 1,500 contacted ITV, the network that airs X Factor. An X Factor spokesman, however, has said that Aguilera and Rihanna’s numbers “were appropriate for the show.” See the performances embedded after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

'Survivor: Nicaragua': Winner Fabio reveals the secret to his success

He had to win three straight challenges just to get to the finals, but once he did, Judson “Fabio” Birza poured on the charm to become the million dollar winner of Survivor: Nicaragua. His savvy social game combined with strength in immunity competitions propelled him over Chase and Sash, making the 21-year-old the youngest Survivor winner ever. We spoke this morning with a still clearly elated Fabio, even if he was working on only 25 minutes of sleep.

A lot of controversy last night, and I’m speaking, of course, about your new haircut. What made you chop the locks?
I had to do it, man. I had to give them my big-boy hair. Decided to get it cut Friday. It’s actually shorter than I planned. But I had my hair long for so long now I figured last night would be a good one to sport my new haircut. And it grows back, so no big deal. READ FULL STORY »

'Survivor': Jeff Probst explains the game-changing 'Redemption Island' twist

Out with the old, in with the new! At the conclusion of the Survivor: Nicaragua live reunion show, the first promo was revealed for season 22 of the reality franchise: Survivor: Redemption Island, which will premiere on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. EW.com was on location back in August for filming in Nicaragua and spoke to Jeff Probst about the new twist.

“How it works is very simple,” explained Probst. “When you’re voted out at Tribal Council, you don’t go home. You’re not out of the game. You go to Redemption Island and you live alone. And at a certain point in the game another person will join you. You will compete in a duel. The winner stays. The loser goes home. So you’re continuing to live out there on your own with very basic supplies. But you’re still in the game. And at a certain point you’ll be allowed to reenter the game and have a shot at the money.” In other words, people that are voted out will compete against each other for a chance to later rejoin the game. Exclusive First Look: 'SYTYCD' host Cat Deeley guest stars on Disney dance series 'Shake It Up'

Categories: EW Exclusive, First Look

Cat-Deeley-Shake-UpImage Credit: Craig Sjodin/DisneySo You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley will guest star in an upcoming episode of the Disney Channel series, Shake It Up, as Ms. Winslow, the school’s vice principal. As you can tell from this exclusive First Look photo above, Deeley’s school administrator character is the butt of a practical joke by Rocky (Zendaya), who covered her entire office in bubble wrap after getting in trouble. Deeley remembers shooting on the bubble-wrapped set as more than a good time. “It was hilarious to shoot,” Deeley says, “because every time you walked on it there was just kind of crunching. You know when you’re a little kid and you play with bubble wrap all the time? There was a little bit of a child that came out in me that couldn’t stop popping the bubbles. They had to keep telling me to stop doing it!”

The experience of shooting was certainly a fun one for Deeley—but she did find herself a bit intimidated by the teenage stars of the show. “The only thing I was worried about was working with the kids because you know they are so brilliant,” she says. “You have no idea! I was actually more nervous than any of the kids. I was watching them for tips, you know?”

The Shake It Up episode Deeley guest stars in, titled “Wild It Up,” airs Jan. 9 at 8:30 p.m. on the Disney Channel.

ABC greenlights pilot from Shonda Rhimes

ABC has greenlit its first pilot for the 2011-12 development season – a new drama from uber-producer Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice). Penned by Rhimes, the untitled project revolves around the life and work of a professional “fixer” and her “dysfunctional staff,” an ABC spokeswoman says. The character is based on the career of Judy Smith, a crisis management consultant who has guided corporations, politicians and public figures over the last 20 years.

Smith is a co-executive producer. The project will be produced under Rhimes’ Shondaland shingle for ABC Studios.

'Dexter' changing show runners for season 6

Categories: Dexter, TV Biz

Dexter has a new man in charge: Series executive producer Scott Buck will assume show-running duties for the Showtime drama’s sixth season, replacing Chip Johannessen. Showtime confirmed the news, which was first reported by Deadline, but would not comment further. It’s the second year in a row that there has been a changing of the guard: Johannessen succeeded Clyde Phillips before season 5. Buck has been with Dexter since season 2 and served as a writer-producer on star Michael C. Hall’s other cable hit, Six Feet Under. This season was Dexter’s highest-rated to date, averaging more than five million viewers weekly (including repeats and on demand), and the show received multiple Golden Globe and SAG nominations earlier in the week.

Nicollette Sheridan drops abuse charges in 'Desperate Housewives' lawsuit

Former Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan has dropped the most incendiary claims of abuse from the $20 million lawsuit she filed this spring against ABC, the show’s creator Marc Cherry, and Touchstone Television. Sheridan, who played Edie Britt on the series, filed the suit in April after being dropped from the show, alleging that she had been assaulted by Cherry on the set and then fired when she reported the abuse to ABC. In a joint stipulation filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Sheridan agreed not to pursue her claim that she had been subjected to intentional emotional distress or seek any damages for emotional or physical abuse. In exchange, Sheridan will not have to submit to a mental or physical examination.

'Modern Family' scoop: Matt Dillon to play Claire's ex

modern-family-castingImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos; Bob Charlotte/PR Photos; Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.comModern Family is about to demonstrate that Claire Dunphy has always had excellent taste in men. EW has learned exclusively that Matt Dillon (Crash) will play the ex-boyfriend of Julie Bowen’s character in an upcoming episode of the ABC comedy.

There’s no airdate – much less a script for the episode - but EW has also learned this juicy little detail: Claire’s ex has a new galpal and the mother of three is probably not going to like her. It’s Claire’s mom, DeDe Pritchett! Shelley Long will reprise her role as DeDe, a role she originated last season in an episode titled “The Incident.” (Remember? DeDe comes to visit the family for the first time since making a huge, drunken scene at Jay and Gloria’s wedding).

Dillon most recently appeared in Armored and Old Dogs.

Exclusive: Eric Braeden on Neil Patrick Harris calling him a 'D-bag' on Twitter

Neil-Patrick-Harris-and-Eric-BraedenImage Credit: Emiley Schweich/PR Photos; Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosEric Braeden to Neil Patrick Harris: You don’t know who you’re dealing with, young whippersnapper! After the star of How I Met Your Mother posted a message via his Twitter account calling the The Young and the Restless actor a “D-bag” for failing to make good on a promise to reprise his role as Robin’s dad on the CBS comedy, Braeden talked exclusively to EW about the comment and what prompted him to skip Thursday’s taping.

“I really don’t know who that fellow is. He’s a guy who stars in that series,” Braeden told EW, laughing. “It’s very unfortunate. First of all, I came back from hip surgery. I was off for three weeks. I’ve doubled my work, 30 to 50 pages a day for me, alone. Everyone knows that I’m exhausted. I was not about to appear on a show for two lines, because that’s what it amounted to.”

On his Twitter feed, Harris said, “Eric Braeden is a D-Bag. The actor, (Robin’s dad) agreed to a cameo, then last night bailed, saying the part wasn’t ‘substantial’ enough.” The reason for his so-called bailing? Braeden said he only learned about the size of his part the day before the taping, which he considered unreasonable. (He believes he should have been given the scripts weeks in advance).

Braeden originally agreed to take the gig because he enjoyed his first appearance on the CBS comedy in November 2008.  “I truly enjoyed working there last time,” Braeden said. “The cast and crew and producers couldn’t have been nicer.”

As for Harris, “His choice of words bothered me,” Braeden added. “It seems to me like a young whippersnapper, having seen himself on a few covers, who’s received a few awards, is now suddenly suffering from the first signs of hubris. I’ve been in the business for 50 years. I’ve seen people come and go and I’m still here.”

Braeden ultimately laughed off the whole situation. “If he is a worthy adversary, he’d better not cross my path. I will let bygones be bygones.”

It looks like Harris feels the same way. Three hours after his initial Twitter post, he added this comment: “Now I feel bad for the D-bag comment. Don’t know the guy personally. I’m just fiercely protective of our show.” Harris also said via Twitter that the role was re-cast with Ray Wise, “a fantastic actor who makes any part ‘substantial’. Super excited to welcome him to the family.”

Braeden will appear on CBS’ The Talk on Jan. 14.

Canada's 'Being Erica' getting U.S. adaptation on ABC: Exclusive details!

being-ericaImage Credit: Stephen Scott/Temple Street ProductionsABC is developing Canadian cult-hit Being Erica — which has been running stateside on SoapNet — for U.S. audiences. Maggie Friedman (Dawson’s Creek, Once and Again) will write the pilot script for the dramedy, which follows the adventures of a 30-ish woman whose unique psychotherapist allows her to travel back in time to redo her greatest regrets in life; it will be set in Philadelphia, EW has learned exclusive. The original version of the show is still awaiting its fourth-season pickup on home network CBC, though exec producer Aaron Martin promises the season, if it happens, will answer “every question” about Erica’s therapy and her time travel — “no Lost mystery, no Inception spinning-top teasing.” The theme of the final season will be, he says, “coming full circle, fulfilling your purpose, and finding joy.” Being Erica‘s third season airs on SoapNet starting Jan. 26.

Yes, Jules will be sticking around for a while when the show returns with new episodes on Jan. 27. McManus — who auditioned for Jules, found out that same day she got the part, and had one day before she was on a plane to Atlanta — says she’s filmed another three episodes and doesn’t know when her arc will end. “I’m always curious every time we get a script.
