'Desperate Housewives': Time for raises on Wisteria Lane?

desperate-housewivesImage Credit: Ron Tom/ABCA raise for Lynette, Bree, Susan and Gabrielle may not top your Christmas list this year but for the stars of ABC’s Desperate Housewives, it certainly would help to ring in the new year. Contracts for Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Eva Longoria expire at the end of the season, and EW has learned that renegotiations have already begun.

ABC hasn’t officially said whether the drama will return for an eighth year, but all signs indicate that it’s a sure thing: Creator Marc Cherry is committed to Wisteria Lane through 2013 and the drama remains the most-watched series on Sundays (12.9 million). It’s also the No. 1 non-sports program on the night in adults 18-49 (4.3 rating/10 share) and dominates its time period across all key female demographics. The show also commands a hefty ad rate that’s well north of $200,000 per 30-second spot and ranks among TV’s highest-rated scripted series among adults in homes with an $100,000-plus annual income.

Since the four stars earn the same amount — reports peg their salaries at roughly $400,000 each per episode, which makes them among TV’s highest paid stars — its likely the women will negotiate together. From what EW hears, the women continue to get along well and are dedicated to seeing through Cherry’s vision. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, Cherry’s eager to find new hits for the Alphabet network. He has a script in development dubbed Hallelujah that would center on a small town “which finds itself being torn apart by the forces of good and evil,” according to Variety . Things improve, however, when a stranger comes to town “looking to bring justice, peace, and a little bit of faith” to the residents. The project is set up at ABC Studios through Cherry’s huge overall deal.

'Portlandia' First Look: Fred Armisen dreams of '90s

Categories: First Look, Television

PortlandiaImage Credit: Scott Green/IFCRemember the ’90s? (You know, the time when people were talking about getting tribal tattoos.) If you feel like you’re living in the wrong era, or that your affinity for drab-colored hoodies and knit caps isn’t being appreciated in your sunny surroundings (bah humbug), Fred Armisen has the answer: Portland. The SNL star is preaching the values of this lost era in the new six-part sketch series Portlandia. Created and written by Armisen, and costarring Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein, the show is an homage to the days of listless ambition and the cool temperatures of the Pacific Northwest. EW has an exclusive first look at Portlandia‘s first scene (embedded below); check out the full episode when it premieres Friday Jan. 21 at 10:30 p.m. EST on IFC. (But no piercings, please. 'Fringe' exclusive: Fox execs on its 'deathslot'-spoofing promo and plans to attract new viewers

Categories: Fringe, Sci-Fi, Television

Fringe-time-slotEver since Fox announced it was moving its acclaimed but ratings-challenged sci-fi saga Fringe to Fridays from its current home on Thursday, fans have been blogging and tweeting much pessimism about the show’s chances for survival beyond this season. Friday is one of the least watched TV nights of the week, and in recent years, it hasn’t been too kind to sci-fi series — or at least Fox’s sci-fi series. See: Joss Whedon’s Firefly; Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Fox execs and Fringe’s exec producers have tried to get the word out that the network remains committed to the series, but fans remain nervous that Friday = Death for Fringe. So to further combat the perception that Fox has basically issued a “no confidence” vote in Fringe, the network did something unusual: It created a cheeky promo that tackles the fear-mongering head-on, spliced with darkly comic death-themed clips from the show and even spiked with quotes from a variety of Chicken Little bloggers. (“…a Friday air date is usually the beginning of the end for any series…” – Ethan Anderton / Collider.) Take a look:  READ FULL STORY »

'Burn Notice': Bruce Campbell teases tonight's game-changing finale

burn-notice-finaleImage Credit: Glenn Watson/USA Network[SPOILERS AHEAD. Consider this your warning.] Remember last season’s finale of USA’s Burn Notice when the final moments featured a shackled and hooded Michael Westen being walked down a dauntingly dark hall, and at the very end, it was revealed he was in a fancy-looking room — possibly being un-burned? Well, the last shot of tonight’s season finale, which airs tonight at 8 p.m. ET, is likely to leave you with bated breath as well. Possibly more so than last season.

This is where we’d normally tell you more, but Bruce Campbell threatened to kill us. (He was kidding…we hope.) So instead, we’ll let him do the teasing about the episode, which finds the team helping Michael battling his nemesis Brennan.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Hi Bruce. How’re you doing?
BRUCE CAMPBELL: I’m doing fine and dandy. What’s goin’ on?

Not much here, but I know you’re pretty busy these days.
Well, we’re getting busy. We’re about to jump into the Sam Axe TV movie. So yeah, things are heating up, as they say.

Where are you calling from? Are you in Colombia?
I’m calling from Oregon. My home state of Oregon.

Oh, home for the holidays.
Yes, as I get ready to go to Bogota, Colombia just after the new year.

I’m surprised you’re not over there already keeping your co-star Jeffery Donovan on task.
It’s okay. His job is to get over there and rough the edges, and I come in and polish the little stone. That’s my analogy. It’s great to have him there and set everything up, but I’ll be over there soon. I love the fact that he’s directing.

Tell me about that. How’d Donovan come to direct the Sam Axe TV movie?
It’s all part of my plan. [Laughs] READ FULL STORY »

'The Young and the Restless' scoop: Head writer Maria Arena Bell named executive producer

Good news for fans of Maria Arena Bell’s style of storytelling for CBS’ The Young and the Restless: She’s been named executive producer on the daytime drama, EW has learned exclusively. Bell was named head writer of the sudser in March 2008 and named a co-exec producer in September 2008. She will remain the head writer as she takes on even more responsibility, which includes leading the writing team and overseeing all creative aspects of the show.

In its 37th season, The Young and the Restless has been the No. 1 rated daytime drama on TV for more than 22 years. Last week, the soap — which is produced by Bell Dramatic Serial Company, in association with Sony Pictures TV  — finished in the top spot among adults 18-49. (The No. 2 show was Days of Our Lives, another sudser from Sony that airs on NBC).

Previously, Bell wrote for The Bold and the Beautiful.

'The Good Wife' exclusive: Rita Wilson, F. Murray Abraham star in episode inspired by 'The Social Network'

Good-Wife-castingImage Credit: Tommaso Boddi/PR Photos; Sylvain Gaboury/PR PhotosThe legal ranks are about to get a lot more impressive on CBS’ The Good Wife. EW has learned exclusively that Rita Wilson (It’s Complicated) and F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus) will guest star in a February episode that’s inspired by The Social Network and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The episode focuses on a junior genius who launched a successful website that prompts a big movie about his life. He ends up suing the producers for defamation, however, because he’s not happy with the results. (For more about the episode, click here). Abraham — last seen depicting a professor on HBO’s Bored to Death — will play Burl, the head attorney at a film conglomerate. Smug but friendly, he represents the studio in the lawsuit. Wilson, meanwhile, will play Viola, a top-of-her field lawyer. Though botoxed to the max, Viola brims with power and self-confidence and is an old friend of Diane (Christine Baranski), who asks for her help with a case.

Wilson also recently appeared in Old Dogs and My Life in Ruins.

Seth Green talks 'Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III' and his desire to redeem Jar Jar Binks

Seth-Green-Robot-ChickenImage Credit: Adult Swim; Inset: Tina Gill/PR PhotosThis Sunday, multimedia comic whiz Seth Green debuts Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III (Adult Swim, 11:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. ET), his third send-up of George Lucas’s ubiquitous space saga. But Green’s involvement in that Galaxy Far, Far Away runs deeper than imagining a “Yo Momma Fight” between Luke Skywalker and Emperor Palpatine. He’s also voiced two characters on Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars (read our recaps here), including the son of George Lucas’s Revenge of the Sith character Baron Papanoida (“That’s like the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me,” he says. “I just hope they make action figures.”) And now he’s developing an animated comedy series directly with Lucasfilm that will be set in the Star Wars galaxy. We chatted with the man who brought you “Admiral Ackbar Cereal” and “Jar Jar Binks for Gecko Insurance” about his new special, why Star Wars is endlessly ripe for parody, and his effort to redeem the aforementioned Gungan.

On making fun of Star Wars: Star Wars is endlessly available for parody. George has joked that he made the movie as cannon fodder for MAD magazine. For us, I don’t know we would make another episode. Matt and I are looking at this other show we’re making for [Lucasfilm] and we’re thinking there may be greater opportunities for comedy with that.

On the new animated comedy series he’s developing with Robot Chicken co-creator Matt Senreich for Lucasfilm: I literally can’t tell you anything about it, but I will say this: It won’t look like any Star Wars you’ve seen. It’s a whole new aesthetic.  READ FULL STORY »
