'Charlie's Angel's' details: Angels as reformed criminals?

Categories: Scoop, Television, TV Biz

EW has fresh details about ABC’s Charlie’s Angels reboot: Unlike the original 1970s series, where the team of private investigators were disgruntled graduates of the police academy, the update currently has the crime-fighters as a trio of not-so-angelic criminals. In the pilot, Charlie brings them together and offers an opportunity to redeem themselves — by working for him, of course.

One major character is still being tweaked, however, and keep in mind pilots tend to undergo plenty of changes before they air. One of the trio has been previously reported as a con artist, while another is an ex-Marine and weapons expert.

Though the recent feature films were light-hearted (and, like the new series, executive produced by Drew Barrymore), sources say the new show will be a “fairly serious, non-campy” take on the concept.

But ABC’s Angels will match the original series in at least a couple key respects… READ FULL STORY »

CBS fills 'Two and a Half Men' gap, orders more episodes of other comedies

CBS confirmed today that it has ordered two additional episodes of Rules of Engagement to prepare for the possibility that Two and Half Men will have to go on an extended hiatus because of Charlie Sheen’s stint in rehab.

The network may also be close to ordering additional episodes of Mike & Molly, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It’s unlikely that How I Met Your Mother will have to produce additional episodes. READ FULL STORY »

'The Office' scoop: No way Will Ferrell will be the new boss, says Rainn Wilson

Categories: Scoop, The Office, TV Scoop

Way to crush our world, Dwight! The Office’s Rainn Wilson set EW straight on Will Ferrell’s much-anticipated appearance later this season. (Ferrell will reunite with his Anchorman co-star Steve Carell in a four-episode arc as a branch manager who arrives from the home office and proves to be just as inept as Michael Scott.) “Will is coming in as a possible boss but everyone knows he is not going to stay because he makes $20 million a film,” Wilson told EW exclusively while walking the red carpet of the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday. “He’s got other fish to fry. He called us up. He called the producers and said ‘I heard Steve’s leaving and I would like to be a part of his exit some how. I’d like to be there for it.’ So they were like, ‘Hell’s yeah!’ I think it will be great because Will’s sense of humor is very much in line with our show’s sense of humor.”  READ FULL STORY »

'Working Class' debut sets record; 'Spartacus' steady

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

CMT’s first scripted series broke ratings records for the network Friday night, as Ed Asner’s Working Class delivered 1.2 million viewers. That’s the biggest debut for any original series in CMT’s history, though its young adult numbers were modest by comparison (0.5 rating).

The night was topped by Discovery Channel’s hit Gold Rush: Alaska, which had 3.4 million viewers (1.3 in demo). Over on Starz, the second episode of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena held last week’s record premiere high of 1.1 million viewers (0.5).

'The Daily Show' beats 'Conan' in January ratings

Here’s an update in the late-night talk show ratings war.  No, the other one.

Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart has beaten TBS’ Conan for the month of January among total viewers and adults 18-49. But Conan was still a strong No. 2. Here’s how those cable talk shows (and a few others) measure up: READ FULL STORY »

Spike orders car repo game show from 'Jersey Shore' producers

Spike TV just announced a recession-era game show from the producers of Jersey Shore. Titled Repo Games, the show follows two real-life repo men who give debtors one last chance to keep their cars by playing in a quiz show.

They’re asked five questions, and if they get three answers correct, the car will be paid off on the spot. Answer wrong, the car is towed to the impound lot.  It’s “Cops meets Jeopardy,” says the network.

But isn’t there something depressing about playing a game show to keep your own car? Imagine this idea being done with, say, a home under foreclosure. Same concept yet feels very different, right? Kids crying, Sheriffs Department waiting to change the locks, while some poor bastard tries to remember the capital of Bolivia.* READ FULL STORY »

'V' to pull a 'Jericho': Season will end on cliffhanger despite cancellation risk -- EXCLUSIVE

Categories: Scoop, Television, TV Biz

V producers aren’t letting modest ratings hold them back: The upcoming second season finale is going to finish with a major cliffhanger, sources say.

The story decision is crucial as it suggests the producers either have some degree of confidence that the series will land a third season … or some measure of all-in bluster.

“To cliff-hang or not to cliff-hang?” is the angst-ridden serialized TV show writer’s existential question every season. If you don’t provide resolution, you risk a hugely unsatisfying ending should the network kill your show. Yet if you write an ending that wraps up key storylines, you could lose fan interest and storytelling momentum — which makes things tougher if the show does return for another season.

CBS attracts the lovers to 'The Lost Valentine,' but Fox football steals the hearts of young adults

Categories: TV Ratings

lost-valentineFox’s telecast of the NFC-AFC Pro Bowl helped the network to win Sunday among most key demographics including adults 18-49 (4.1 rating/11 share), according to preliminary estimates. Knowing the gridiron action would dominate the night, the competition either gutted it out with reruns (Desperate Housewives, Undercover Boss) or flicks like National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets on NBC (1.4/3, 4.2 million). CBS, however, found huge success with the Hallmark movie The Lost Valentine – which not only won its time period in viewers (14.3 million) but represented the most-watched Hallmark movie in four years (since Valley of Light).

CBS, as the result, finished the night as the most-watched network (11.8 million). Fox was second with 11.4 million, followed by ABC (7.5 million), and NBC (4.6 million).
