'Game of Thrones' premiere date revealed

Just left roundtable interviews with George R.R. Martin and the Game of Thrones producers and there’s still a TCA press tour Thrones panel to come, so we’re going to have plenty of news on the show later today.

But I wanted to get this factoid to you right now: HBO has firmed up its Thrones premiere date. Ready? It’s…

April 17.

(Yes, it’s been April for awhile, but now they have an actual date). A Sunday, naturally.

Will you watch?

UPDATE: George R.R. Martin gives fourth book update, talks HBO series

Why, yes. Yes I will. Thanks, James!

  • Will

    Yep. Can’t wait.

  • Valli

Of course I will watch! My boyfriend has been going crazy, getting everyone to read the books before the series. I hope the show lives up!

  • Melissa

Yes indeed I will! We got HBO in order to watch this series.

Oh good lord, this is the perfect news to make my day better. There are 73 Chapters in A Game of Thrones and a total of 271 in the currently published books. This means that, starting January 8, there are 100 days left before the premiere. Plenty of time for 1 chapter a day to get through the first book and 2.71 chapters a day to get through the whole series. Also… I CANNOT WAIT 100 DAYS!

  • Michelle

    EXCELLENT.

  • Kermode

I generally detest fantasy, taking place in ancient primitive days? Hm.. not my idea of a good time, yet everybody else seems to be totally freaking out over this (surely you haven’t all read the books?!)

    • Werthead

One of the interesting things about THRONES is that it makes clear that living in the medieval (or medieval-like) period is not fun, instead of glamourising it like some other fantasies do. The books are, to an extent, a deconstruction of ‘happy’ and childish, good-vs-evil fantasies like ERAGON (a bit like how THE WIRE readdresses the cliches of the police procedural).

The last book hit #1 on the NYT bestseller list and the series has sold about 8 million copies worldwide, so it has a pretty big audience (far bigger than say TRUE BLOOD’s before that show aired).

Kermode – This series completely changed my perception of the fantasy genre. Give it a shot. You won’t be sorry.

These books are awesome, I am not into fantasty ones either, but this drew me in. Beautifully written characters. LOVE Tyrion, Jamie & Brienne. Sure hope they cast as well as GRR wrote!!

Hahaha, Coachella Sunday! I will be appropriately inebriated and elated, but that parking lot line is gonna be extra-irritating this year! I wonder if they’ll broadcast the east coast feed (likely 6:00 PST) in one of the tents? That would be amazing!

  • Courtney

Thank you!!! I’ve been ripping my hair out wondering when this was going to happen, since I’ve been tracking it since the news that it was even going to be a show came out (WAY TOO LONG AGO). The first three books are absolutely brilliant. Wonderful. Amazing. Truly. I read the first in 8th grade and have read it so many times it’s falling apart.

Honestly, it’s great. Read it if you like books in general.

  • Gwen

I can’t wait for the series! I do wish GRRM would get the next book out, though.

  • mechanicsnazi

I’m not saying this smugly, because I understand why the mistake is made, but it’s “a while,” not “awhile.” You’re talking about a period of time, and that makes it a noun, just like “a month” is a noun. “Awhile” is an abverb. (“She rested how? She rested awhile.”) Just saying this because I see this mistake about three times a week on this site.

  • Amanda

Should have asked him when A Dance with Dragons is finally gonna be finished.

    • Werthead

It was supposed to have been this week, but GRRM was knocked out over the holidays by an e.coli infection. A publisher rep at the TCA event says they will have a formal announcement ‘soon’.

  • sabrina W

i’ll watch and yet i have no clue what it is about, but being made by HBO is reason enough!!! maybe i’ll check out the books but my project this year is to read all the harry potter books for first time ever before last film comes out!

  • Eleanor

James, thanks so much for all the Game of Thrones updates today, it’s been like another Christmas morning for me!

  • donna Lumme

Thank goodness ! Now I know when I have to get HBO by. The only reason to order HBO is this show !

    • cabinsuzi

I Agree, I am going to order HBO just for this, then buy the first year! Can’t wait!!
