Wow: The ratings for the third season premiere of Jersey Shore are freakin’ huge.
The series returned Thursday night to 8.4 million viewers.
That makes it MTV’s most-watched series telecast of all time. (For EW’s recap of last night’s shenanigans, click here.) In MTV’s 12-34 demo, Shore was up 63 percent from season 2′s opener. Even more impressive: Shore had a 4.2 adult demo rating — that’s higher any show on the big broadcast networks last night except chart-toppers The Big Bang Theory and Grey’s Anatomy (which Shore tied).

Holy. Guacamole.
Well, I guess the sun is going to explode now. Take me god I am ready now before I become one of them!
I feel sorry for today’s youth; they have such poor role models, how can we expect them to turn out like normal people when they see this every day? These people look like freaks. They can’t even speak in full sentences. And they do awful things. It is so sad.
Who says these people are their role models? I suppose for some small amount of them, perhaps they are role models. I also think it’s reasonable to assume that for most of “today’s youth”, the Jersey Shore people are just *entertainment*. The modern equivalent of clowns, if you will.
People like watching this because it makes them feel better about themselves.
@Holly
Mind your damn business! No one needs pious, judgmental “freaks” like yourself deciding what is morally acceptable. It’s mindless, trainwreck entertainment, period. If you think anyone actually takes these people seriously or looks at them as role models, it’s YOU who needs a reality check. Move along and find something worthwhile to blow your hot air at.
Yes, because I am the person I am today because of the people I watched on TV. Gimme a break!
So, back to Miami for the fourth season?
italy!!
nope they goin to italy
Pauly is 30, Sitch is 29ish, how long can they play ‘kids’?
27-year-olds are playing 16 year-olds on Glee. Guess they can play up childlike behavior until about 35
The difference is that the 27 years olds on Glee are acting in a fictional show. The guys on JS weren’t hired to be 18 and are well past the age at which they should be mature enough not to be the way they are. Heck, I know 15 year old boys who are more mature. But, I guess, as long as they get paid an obscene amount of money to be that way, they can milk it well into their thirties, as you say Casey.
And as much as I can’t stand the overexposure of Glee, they’re not having sex and getting hammered every second of every day. And as Cathy pointed out, it’s FICTION.
are they playing kids? they’re playing themselves…
This would be true. I hate to admit I watch this show…but I do and I like it.
I have no reason why, because I’ve never been a fan of reality shows.
as long as mtv is cutting them a check they’ll play kids for long time lol
What is wrong with that? They get paid for being themselves! I am 33 and if I could goof off and make millions I don’t think it would be that tough of a decision..
8.4 million people that the world would be better off without…
You sound like Hitler. You really do. For real.
agreed. So so sad about what the world is becoming :/
What is wrong with young America?
I think “I Love Lucy” is to blame.
It’s entertaining dudet! It’s like watching any other comedy. We get our intellectual fill from, college classes and…books, and other…stuff. Yeah, get it?
.
‘I Love Lucy’ is definitely to blame.
I’m starting to believe that the world really will end in 2012. Or maybe I’m just hoping it will.
I’m certainly hoping it will.
Isn’t there some religious group that thinks it’s going to end in May of this year? Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll be right.
Oh, Jennifer, don’t tease.
I think we just found out what is causing all the mysterious bird and fish deaths. Mass suicide. They just couldn’t live in a world where ‘Jersey Shore’ could be a hit.
In a related story, the national average IQ continues to plummet…
wow. it’s a sad day when this garbage beats out truly good storytelling in shows like Fringe. what is wrong with people?
Fringe takes time to sit down and watch. I watch it, but I can understand why Jersey Shore is far more popular (like any blockbuster movie). It’s escapist entertainment, because a lot of people are involved in their own lives, and not TV.
Or they have very short attention sp… oh look a puppy!
I can’t believe that more people watch this garbage than shows like Fringe, Parks and Recreation, or Community. Sigh…
This says a lot about our society. I’m afraid…..I’m very afraid.
ooorrrr, it says that a lot of people find the cast relatable, entertaining, and funny. Just because you don’t doesn’t mean that the world is ending.
Like I said in another post… People have different interests. Why are people SO KEEN on bashing other people? That’s what I’m more worried about.
TV is an escapism, entertainment. Stop taking it so seriously people.
Uh, no it doesn’t say anything about it being “relatable”. It says that people like watching a trainwreck. That’s like saying COPS has been on the air for 25 years because people can relate to it. People like watching idiots, plain and simple. If you find that you can relate to it, than you are also a trainwreck, plain and simple. Just because something is escapist entertainment doesn’t mean it has to be as dumb as a bag of doorknobs. I watch shows that are extremely complex and engaging for escapist entertainment too. Some brains need more food than others, apparently.
Low brow interests indicate low brow people – and that is a problem in a democracy.
These people are not “relatable” at all. How many people do you know that look, act or dress the way they do?
Very well put, Ian! I agree wholeheartedly.
thank u!!
“Is this how you conduct yourself!? In a democracy?!” – Will Ferrell
its a sad sad day for human beings
As the snooty maitre d’ in Ferris Bueller says, “I weep for the future.”
Complete trash. It’s not even entertaining; sure, maybe it’s a little fun to watch for about 5 minutes, but then you see that all Jersey Shore is – just very stupid people partying, hooking up, and fighting about it. It’s easily the most trashiest show I have ever seen, and it still baffles me that it has an audience. Once, a very long time ago, MTV was a reputable network, known for being groundbreaking and almost revolutionary with the quality of their shows. Now, though, this piece of crap is their highest rated show. Unbelievable. Just watching these people makes me sick. Jersey Shore is the epitome of our degrading society, and that’s not just scary, but it’s also sad. Very sad, indeed.
I find the most entertaining things about this show are the recaps. I don’t watch the show but I can’t wait to read the weekly recaps on this site and on TelevisionWithoutPity. JS gives an opportunity for some awesome writing.
I want to live in a world where it’s okay to watch garbage TV.
Congrats! You do!!!
Samesies.
Seriously.
LOL @ Luggages…. hahahaha. Oh Sammi, the sweetest bitch you’ll ever meet.
I want to live in a world where nobody would want to.
Some people like porn, some people immerse themselves in video games, some people enjoy competitive square dancing.
Do any of those things appeal to me? No.
Do I care that others enjoy them? No.
I hope you don’t waste too much energy being critical of others’ personal tastes. You’re taking it too seriously.
Whoops, that was meant for Kermode. I guess Jersey Shore has rotten my brain to the point that the blue reply arrow eludes me.
What kind of person doesn’t like PORN thats just wrong!
Jersey Shore makes Jerry Springer look like the Oprah Winfrey show. Who really watches a show about a bunch of stuck-up momma-boy wannabes? Oh yeah, a bunch of stuck-up momma-boy wannabes. This is a sad view of the future of our country. Of course, this is coming from the same network that brought us Jackass, another stupid mind-numbing and IQ dropping show.
